⁹ From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name ¹⁰ (these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):

¹⁹ The total number of towns^(P) for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.^(Q)

¹³ Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad,^(A) Eliel, Ismakiah, Mahath and Benaiah were assistants of Konaniah and Shimei his brother. All these served by appointment of King Hezekiah and Azariah the official in charge of the temple of God.

⁸ Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots^(A) for their duties.

²² Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers^(A) at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer.^(B)
