²⁴ Ahaz gathered together the furnishings^(A) from the temple of God^(B) and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors^(C) of the Lord’s temple and set up altars^(D) at every street corner in Jerusalem.

⁷ They also shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They did not burn incense^(A) or present any burnt offerings at the sanctuary to the God of Israel.

³ He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished; he also erected altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles.^(A) He bowed down^(B) to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. ⁴ He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “My Name^(C) will remain in Jerusalem forever.” ⁵ In both courts of the temple of the Lord,^(D) he built altars to all the starry hosts.

¹⁴ They removed the altars^(A) in Jerusalem and cleared away the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley.^(B)

¹⁷ King Ahaz cut off the side panels and removed the basins from the movable stands. He removed the Sea from the bronze bulls that supported it and set it on a stone base.^{(A) 18} He took away the Sabbath canopy^[a] that had been built at the temple and removed the royal entryway outside the temple of the Lord, in deference to the king of Assyria.^(B)

²³ For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship^(A)—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
