⁴ Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built fortresses and towers.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

³⁹ Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, ^(A)to a city of Judah,

⁹ And Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the ^(A)Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress of the wall; then he fortified them. ¹⁰ Also he built towers in the desert. He dug many wells, for he had much livestock, both in the lowlands and in the plains; he also had farmers and vinedressers in the mountains and in ^[a]Carmel, for he loved the soil.

⁷ Therefore he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.

Rehoboam Fortifies the Cities

⁵ So Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah. ⁶ And he built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, ⁷ Beth Zur, Sochoh, Adullam, ⁸ Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, ⁹ Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, ¹⁰ Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and Benjamin, fortified cities.

¹² Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how ^(A)the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. ^(B)It may be that the Lord will be with me, and ^(C)I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

¹³ And Joshua ^(D)blessed him, ^(E)and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.
