⁵ Then he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and ^(A)gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you do it quickly.”

However the Levites did not do it quickly.

Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law^(A)

^8 (B)In the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the ^[a]temple, he sent ^(C)Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the ^(D)governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. ⁹ When they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered ^(E)the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the doors had gathered from the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the ^(F)remnant of Israel, from all Judah and Benjamin, and which they had brought back to Jerusalem.

Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple

³ In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he ^(A)opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them.

² He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

⁴ And Jehoash said to the priests, ^(A)“All the money of the dedicated gifts that are brought into the house of the Lord—each man’s ^(B)census^[a] money, each man’s ^(C)assessment money—and all the money that ^[b]a man ^(D)purposes in his heart to bring into the house of the Lord, ⁵ let the priests take it themselves, each from his constituency; and let them repair the ^[c]damages of the temple, wherever any dilapidation is found.”

⁶ Now it was so, by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, ^(E)that the priests had not repaired the damages of the temple. ^7 (F)So King Jehoash called Jehoiada the priest and the other priests, and said to them, “Why have you not repaired the damages of the temple? Now therefore, do not take more money from your constituency, but deliver it for repairing the damages of the temple.”
