⁵ And he gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, “Go out to the cities of ^(A)Judah and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you act quickly.” But the Levites did not act quickly.

The Book of the Law Found

^8 (A)Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had cleansed the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the ^(B)governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz, ^(C)the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. ⁹ They came to ^(D)Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had collected from ^(E)Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple

³ In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he ^(A)opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them.

² He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of ^(A)Israel.^[a]

Jehoash Repairs the Temple

⁴ Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the holy things ^(A)that is brought into the house of the Lord, the money for which each man is assessed—the money from the assessment of persons—and ^(B)the money that a man's heart prompts him to bring into the house of the Lord, ⁵ let the priests take, each from his donor, and let them repair the house wherever any need of repairs is discovered.” ⁶ But by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had made no repairs on the house. ⁷ Therefore King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and said to them, “Why are you not repairing the house? Now therefore take no more money from your donors, but hand it over for the repair of the house.”
