²² Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada his ^[a]father had done to him, but killed his son; and as he died, he said, “The Lord look on it, and ^(A)repay!”

⁵ Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; ^(A)from the hand of every beast I will require it, and ^(B)from the hand of man. From the hand of every ^(C)man’s brother I will require the life of man.

^51 (A)from the blood of Abel to ^(B)the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

² For ^(A)true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He ^(B)has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.”

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

⁹ When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under ^(A)the altar ^(B)the souls of those who had been slain ^(C)for the word of God and for ^(D)the testimony which they held. ¹⁰ And they cried with a loud voice, saying, ^(E)“How long, O Lord, ^(F)holy and true, ^(G)until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” ¹¹ Then a ^(H)white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them ^(I)that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

³² Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

^20 (A)“Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you ^[a]holy apostles and prophets, for ^(B)God has avenged you on her!”

¹⁶ At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. ^(A)May it not be charged against them.
