²¹ But ^(A)they conspired against him, ^(B)and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord.

⁵⁸ Then ^(A)they cast him out of the city and ^(B)stoned him. And ^(C)the witnesses laid down their garments ^(D)at the feet of a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ And as they were stoning Stephen, ^(E)he called out, “Lord Jesus, ^(F)receive my spirit.”

^26 (A)“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you ^(B)and cast your law behind their back ^(C)and killed your prophets, who ^(D)had warned them in order to turn them back to you, ^(E)and they committed great blasphemies.

^34 (A)Therefore ^(B)I send you ^(C)prophets and wise men and ^(D)scribes, ^(E)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(F)some you will ^(G)flog in your synagogues and ^(H)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(I)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(J)Abel to the blood of ^(K)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(L)the sanctuary and ^(M)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(N)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

^37 (O)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(P)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have ^(Q)gathered ^(R)your children together ^(S)as a hen gathers her brood ^(T)under her wings, and ^(U)you were not willing!

^35 (A)And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and ^(B)stoned another.

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, ^(A)“Let this man be put to death, ^(B)for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking ^(C)the welfare of this people, but their harm.” ⁵ King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, ^(D)for the king can do nothing against you.” ⁶ So they took Jeremiah ^(E)and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in ^(F)the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down ^(G)by ropes. ^(H)And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and ^(I)Jeremiah sank in the mud.

¹⁸ Then they said, ^(A)“Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, ^(B)for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. ^(C)Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”
