¹⁷ And all the people went to the ^[a]temple of Baal, and tore it down. They broke in pieces its altars and images, and ^(A)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

⁴⁰ And Elijah said to them, ^(A)“Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook ^(B)Kishon and ^(C)executed them there.

² “It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “that I will ^(A)cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause ^(B)the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. ³ It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall ^(C)not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who begot him ^(D)shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

⁷ When he had broken down the altars and the wooden images, had ^(A)beaten the carved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

^4 (A)They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and the incense altars which were above them he cut down; and the wooden images, the carved images, and the molded images he broke in pieces, and made dust of them ^(B)and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

^4 (A)He removed the ^[a]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the ^[b]wooden image and broke in pieces the ^(B)bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it ^[c]Nehushtan.

¹⁸ And all the people of the land went to the ^(A)temple of Baal, and tore it down. They thoroughly ^(B)broke in pieces its altars and ^[a]images, and ^(C)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And ^(D)the priest appointed ^[b]officers over the house of the Lord. ¹⁹ Then he took the captains of hundreds, the bodyguards, the escorts, and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and went by way of the gate of the escorts to the king’s house. Then he sat on the throne of the kings.

²⁵ Now it happened, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, “Go in and kill them; let no one come out!” And they killed them with the edge of the sword; then the guards and the officers threw them out, and went into the ^[a]inner room of the temple of Baal. ²⁶ And they brought the ^(A)sacred pillars out of the temple of Baal and burned them. ²⁷ Then they broke down the sacred pillar of Baal, and tore down the ^[b]temple of Baal and ^(B)made it a refuse dump to this day. ²⁸ Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.
