¹⁴ They buried him in his own tomb, which he had ^[a]made for himself in the City of David; and they laid him in the bed which was filled ^(A)with spices and various ingredients prepared in a mixture of ointments. They made ^(B)a very great burning for him.

¹⁹ Then it happened in the course of time, after the end of two years, that his intestines came out because of his sickness; so he died in severe pain. And his people made no ^[a]burning for him, like ^(A)the burning for his fathers.

² And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to ^(A)embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

⁵ You shall die in peace; as in ^(A)the ceremonies of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, ^(B)so they shall burn incense for you and ^(C)lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!” For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.’ ”

He Is Risen^(A)

16 Now ^(B)when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome ^(C)bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.

³⁹ And ^(A)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of ^(B)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. ⁴⁰ Then they took the body of Jesus, and ^(C)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. ⁴¹ Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. ⁴² So ^(D)there they laid Jesus, ^(E)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

Wisdom and Folly

^24 (A)His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had, and they brought him to Jerusalem. So he died, and was buried in one of the tombs of his fathers. And ^(B)all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
