The Reign and Captivity of Jehoiachin(A)

(B)Jehoiachin[a] was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father had done.

10 (C)At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city [b]was besieged. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, as his servants were besieging it. 12 (D)Then Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his princes, and his officers went out to the king of Babylon; and the king of Babylon, (E)in the eighth year of his reign, took him prisoner.

The Captivity of Jerusalem

13 (F)And he carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house, and he (G)cut in pieces all the articles of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord, (H)as the Lord had said. 14 Also (I)he carried into captivity all Jerusalem: all the captains and all the mighty men of valor, (J)ten thousand captives, and (K)all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained except (L)the poorest people of the land. 15 And (M)he carried Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. The king’s mother, the king’s wives, his officers, and the mighty of the land he carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 (N)All the valiant men, seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths, one thousand, all who were strong and fit for war, these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah(O)

17 Then (P)the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, (Q)Jehoiachin’s[c] uncle, king in his place, and (R)changed his name to Zedekiah.

18 (S)Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was (T)Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 19 (U)He also did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. 20 For because of the anger of the Lord this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, that He finally cast them out from His presence. (V)Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

The Fall and Captivity of Judah(W)

25 Now it came to pass (X)in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and encamped against it; and they built a siege wall against it all around. So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. By the ninth day of the (Y)fourth month the famine had become so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

Then (Z)the city wall was broken through, and all the men of war fled at night by way of the gate between two walls, which was by the king’s garden, even though the Chaldeans were still encamped all around against the city. And (AA)the king[d] went by way of the [e]plain. But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his army was scattered from him. So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon (AB)at Riblah, and they pronounced judgment on him. Then they killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, (AC)put[f] out the eyes of Zedekiah, bound him with bronze fetters, and took him to Babylon.

And in the fifth month, (AD)on the seventh day of the month (which was (AE)the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), (AF)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. (AG)He burned the house of the Lord (AH)and the king’s house; all the houses of Jerusalem, that is, all the houses of the great, (AI)he burned with fire. 10 And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard (AJ)broke down the walls of Jerusalem all around.

11 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive (AK)the rest of the people who remained in the city and the defectors who had deserted to the king of Babylon, with the rest of the multitude. 12 But the captain of the guard (AL)left some of the poor of the land as vinedressers and farmers. 13 (AM)The bronze (AN)pillars that were in the house of the Lord, and (AO)the carts and (AP)the bronze Sea that were in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans broke in pieces, and (AQ)carried their bronze to Babylon. 14 They also took away (AR)the pots, the shovels, the trimmers, the spoons, and all the bronze utensils with which the priests ministered. 15 The firepans and the basins, the things of solid gold and solid silver, the captain of the guard took away. 16 The two pillars, one Sea, and the carts, which Solomon had made for the house of the Lord, (AS)the bronze of all these articles was beyond measure. 17 (AT)The height of one pillar was [g]eighteen cubits, and the capital on it was of bronze. The height of the capital was three cubits, and the network and pomegranates all around the capital were all of bronze. The second pillar was the same, with a network.

18 (AU)And the captain of the guard took (AV)Seraiah the chief priest, (AW)Zephaniah the second priest, and the three doorkeepers. 19 He also took out of the city an officer who had charge of the men of war, (AX)five men of [h]the king’s close associates who were found in the city, the chief recruiting officer of the army, who mustered the people of the land, and sixty men of the people of the land who were found in the city. 20 So Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, took these and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21 Then the king of Babylon struck them and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. (AY)Thus Judah was carried away captive from its own land.

Gedaliah Made Governor of Judah(AZ)

22 Then he made Gedaliah the son of (BA)Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over (BB)the people who remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left. 23 Now when all the (BC)captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Careah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and [i]Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 24 And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men, and said to them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.”

Jehoiachin King of Judah(A)

Jehoiachin(B) was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta(C) daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem. He did evil(D) in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father had done.

10 At that time the officers of Nebuchadnezzar(E) king of Babylon advanced on Jerusalem and laid siege to it, 11 and Nebuchadnezzar himself came up to the city while his officers were besieging it. 12 Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his attendants, his nobles and his officials all surrendered(F) to him.

In the eighth year of the reign of the king of Babylon, he took Jehoiachin prisoner. 13 As the Lord had declared,(G) Nebuchadnezzar removed the treasures(H) from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace, and cut up the gold articles(I) that Solomon(J) king of Israel had made for the temple of the Lord. 14 He carried all Jerusalem into exile:(K) all the officers and fighting men,(L) and all the skilled workers and artisans—a total of ten thousand. Only the poorest(M) people of the land were left.

15 Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin(N) captive to Babylon. He also took from Jerusalem to Babylon the king’s mother,(O) his wives, his officials and the prominent people(P) of the land. 16 The king of Babylon also deported to Babylon the entire force of seven thousand fighting men, strong and fit for war, and a thousand skilled workers and artisans.(Q) 17 He made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah.(R)

Zedekiah King of Judah(S)

18 Zedekiah(T) was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Hamutal(U) daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. 19 He did evil(V) in the eyes of the Lord, just as Jehoiakim had done. 20 It was because of the Lord’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end he thrust(W) them from his presence.(X)

The Fall of Jerusalem(Y)(Z)(AA)

Now Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

25 So in the ninth(AB) year of Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(AC) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army. He encamped outside the city and built siege works(AD) all around it. The city was kept under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

By the ninth day of the fourth[a] month the famine(AE) in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat. Then the city wall was broken through,(AF) and the whole army fled at night through the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden, though the Babylonians[b] were surrounding(AG) the city. They fled toward the Arabah,[c] but the Babylonian[d] army pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his soldiers were separated from him and scattered,(AH) and he was captured.(AI)

He was taken to the king of Babylon at Riblah,(AJ) where sentence was pronounced on him. They killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.(AK)

On the seventh day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, an official of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. He set fire(AL) to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down.(AM) 10 The whole Babylonian army under the commander of the imperial guard broke down the walls(AN) around Jerusalem. 11 Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile(AO) the people who remained in the city, along with the rest of the populace and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon.(AP) 12 But the commander left behind some of the poorest people(AQ) of the land to work the vineyards and fields.

13 The Babylonians broke(AR) up the bronze pillars, the movable stands and the bronze Sea that were at the temple of the Lord and they carried the bronze to Babylon. 14 They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, dishes(AS) and all the bronze articles(AT) used in the temple service. 15 The commander of the imperial guard took away the censers and sprinkling bowls—all that were made of pure gold or silver.(AU)

16 The bronze from the two pillars, the Sea and the movable stands, which Solomon had made for the temple of the Lord, was more than could be weighed. 17 Each pillar(AV) was eighteen cubits[e] high. The bronze capital on top of one pillar was three cubits[f] high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its network, was similar.

18 The commander of the guard took as prisoners Seraiah(AW) the chief priest, Zephaniah(AX) the priest next in rank and the three doorkeepers.(AY) 19 Of those still in the city, he took the officer in charge of the fighting men, and five royal advisers. He also took the secretary who was chief officer in charge of conscripting the people of the land and sixty of the conscripts who were found in the city. 20 Nebuzaradan the commander took them all and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21 There at Riblah,(AZ) in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed.(BA)

So Judah went into captivity,(BB) away from her land.(BC)

22 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah(BD) son of Ahikam,(BE) the son of Shaphan, to be over the people he had left behind in Judah. 23 When all the army officers and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men. 24 Gedaliah took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid of the Babylonian officials,” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.”
