Then Abijah stood up on Mount (A)Zemaraim that is in (B)the hill country of Ephraim and said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel! Ought you not to know that the Lord God of Israel (C)gave the kingship over Israel forever to David and his sons by (D)a covenant of salt? Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up (E)and rebelled against his lord, and certain (F)worthless scoundrels[a] gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was (G)young and irresolute[b] and could not withstand them.

“And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you (H)the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods. (I)Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes (J)for ordination[c] with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are (K)not gods. 10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the Lord who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. 11 They offer to the Lord (L)every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out (M)the showbread on the table of pure gold, (N)and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may (O)burn every evening. For we (P)keep the charge of the Lord our God, but you have forsaken him. 12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests (Q)with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, (R)do not fight against the Lord, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.”

Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim,(A) in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel,(B) listen to me! Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever(C) by a covenant of salt?(D) Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled(E) against his master. Some worthless scoundrels(F) gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive(G) and not strong enough to resist them.

“And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David’s descendants.(H) You are indeed a vast army and have with you(I) the golden calves(J) that Jeroboam made to be your gods. But didn’t you drive out the priests(K) of the Lord,(L) the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull(M) and seven rams(N) may become a priest of what are not gods.(O)

10 “As for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the Lord are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them. 11 Every morning and evening(P) they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense(Q) to the Lord. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table(R) and light the lamps(S) on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the Lord our God. But you have forsaken him. 12 God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you.(T) People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord,(U) the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”(V)
