Thanksgiving and Encouragement

I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.(A) Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you.(B) For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands, for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.(C)

Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, in the power of God,(D) who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace, and this grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,[a](E) 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ,[b] who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.(F)

Thanksgiving

I thank God,(A) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,(B) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.(C) Recalling your tears,(D) I long to see you,(E) so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith,(F) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice(G) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.(H) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,(I) but gives us power,(J) love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed(K) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.(L) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,(M) by the power of God. He has saved(N) us and called(O) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done(P) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed(Q) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,(R) who has destroyed death(S) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
