Be Strong

You therefore, my [a](A)son, (B)be strong in the grace that is in (C)Christ Jesus. The things (D)which you have heard from me in the presence of (E)many witnesses, (F)entrust these to (G)faithful [b]people who will be (H)able to teach others also.

An Unashamed Worker

14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly (A)exhort them in the presence of God not to (B)dispute about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the listeners. 15 Be diligent to (C)present yourself approved to God as a worker who [a]does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling (D)the word of truth. 16 But (E)avoid (F)worldly and empty chatter, for [b]it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their [c]talk will spread like [d]gangrene. Among them are (G)Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth, claiming that (H)the resurrection has already taken place; and they are jeopardizing (I)the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the (J)firm foundation of God stands, having this (K)seal: “(L)The Lord knows those who are His;” and, “(M)Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to keep away from wickedness.”

20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver implements, but also implements of wood and of earthenware, and (N)some are for honor while others are for dishonor. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from (O)these things, he will be an implement for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, (P)prepared for every good work. 22 Now (Q)flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, (R)faith, love, and peace with those who (S)call on the Lord (T)from a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant (U)speculations, knowing that they (V)produce [e]quarrels. 24 (W)The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, (X)skillful in teaching, patient when wronged, 25 (Y)with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, (Z)if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to (AA)the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (AB)the snare of the devil, having been (AC)held captive [f]by him to do his will.

Dealing With False Teachers

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;(A) it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.(B) 16 Avoid godless chatter,(C) because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus(D) and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,(E) and they destroy the faith of some.(F) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,(G) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”(H) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord(I) must turn away from wickedness.”

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.(J) 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.(K)

22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love(L) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord(M) out of a pure heart.(N) 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.(O) 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.(P) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,(Q) 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,(R) who has taken them captive to do his will.

10 Now you (A)followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, (B)love, [a]perseverance, 11 (C)persecutions, and (D)sufferings, such as happened to me at (E)Antioch, at (F)Iconium, and at (G)Lystra; what (H)persecutions I endured, and out of them all (I)the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who want to live in a godly way in Christ Jesus (J)will be persecuted. 13 But evil people and impostors (K)will proceed from bad to worse, (L)deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however, (M)continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that (N)from childhood you have known (O)the sacred writings which are able to (P)give you the wisdom that leads to (Q)salvation through faith which is in (R)Christ Jesus. 16 (S)All Scripture is [b]inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for [c]rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that (T)the man or woman of God may be [d]fully capable, (U)equipped for every good work.

Preach the Word

(V)I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to (W)judge the living and the dead, and by His (X)appearing and His kingdom: preach (Y)the word; be ready [e]in season and out of season; (Z)correct, rebuke, and [f]exhort, with [g]great (AA)patience and instruction. For (AB)the time will come when they will not tolerate (AC)sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, and they (AD)will turn their ears away from the truth and (AE)will turn aside to myths. But as for you, (AF)use self-restraint in all things, (AG)endure hardship, do the work of an (AH)evangelist, fulfill your (AI)ministry.

A Final Charge to Timothy

10 You, however, know all about my teaching,(A) my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch,(B) Iconium(C) and Lystra,(D) the persecutions I endured.(E) Yet the Lord rescued(F) me from all of them.(G) 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,(H) 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,(I) deceiving and being deceived.(J) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,(K) 15 and how from infancy(L) you have known the Holy Scriptures,(M) which are able to make you wise(N) for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed(O) and is useful for teaching,(P) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(Q) 17 so that the servant of God[a](R) may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.(S)

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead,(T) and in view of his appearing(U) and his kingdom, I give you this charge:(V) Preach(W) the word;(X) be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke(Y) and encourage(Z)—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.(AA) Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.(AB) They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.(AC) But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship,(AD) do the work of an evangelist,(AE) discharge all the duties of your ministry.
