Man of Lawlessness

2 Now we ask you, (A)brothers and sisters, regarding the [a](B)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (C)gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your [b]composure or be disturbed either by a (D)spirit, or a [c](E)message, or a (F)letter as if from us, to the effect that (G)the day of the Lord (H)has come. 3 (I)No one is to deceive you in any way! For it will not come unless the [d](J)apostasy comes first, and the (K)man of lawlessness is revealed, the (L)son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above [e](M)every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (N)displaying himself as being God. 5 Do you not remember that (O)while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know (P)what restrains him now, so that he will be revealed in his time. 7 For (Q)the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [f](R)He who now restrains will do so until [g]He is [h]removed. 8 Then that lawless one (S)will be revealed, whom the Lord will eliminate (T)with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the (U)appearance of His [i]coming; 9 that is, the one whose [j]coming is in accord with the activity of (V)Satan, with all power and false [k](W)signs and wonders, 10 and with [l]all the deception of wickedness for (X)those who perish, because they did not accept the love of (Y)the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason (Z)God [m]will send upon them [n]a (AA)deluding influence so that they will believe [o]what is false, 12 in order that they all may be [p]judged who (AB)did not believe the truth, but [q](AC)took pleasure in wickedness.

Stand Firm

13 (AD)But we should always give thanks to God for you, (AE)brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because (AF)God has chosen you [r]from the beginning (AG)for salvation [s](AH)through sanctification [t]by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He (AI)called you through (AJ)our gospel, [u]that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers and sisters, (AK)stand firm and (AL)hold on to the traditions which you were taught, whether (AM)by word of mouth or (AN)by letter [v]from us.

16 (AO)Now may our Lord Jesus Christ (AP)Himself and God our Father, who has (AQ)loved us and given us eternal comfort and (AR)good hope by grace, 17 (AS)comfort and (AT)strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

Man of Lawlessness

2 Now in regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our [a]gathering together to meet Him, we ask you, [b]brothers and sisters,(A) 2 not to be quickly unsettled or alarmed either by a [so-called prophetic revelation of a] spirit or a message or a letter [alleged to be] from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has [already] come. 3 Let no one in any way deceive or entrap you, for that day will not come unless the [c]apostasy comes first [that is, the great rebellion, the abandonment of the faith by professed Christians], and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction [the Antichrist, the one who is destined to be destroyed],(B) 4 who opposes and exalts himself [so proudly and so insolently] above [d]every so-called god or object of worship, so that he [actually enters and] takes his seat in the temple of God, publicly proclaiming that he himself is God.(C) 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know what restrains him now [from being revealed]; it is so that he will be revealed at his own [appointed] time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness [rebellion against divine authority and the coming reign of lawlessness] is already at work; [but it is restrained] only until he who now restrains it is taken out of the way. 8 Then the lawless one [the Antichrist] will be revealed and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by the appearance of His coming.(D) 9 The coming of the [Antichrist, the lawless] one is through the activity of Satan, [attended] with great power [all kinds of counterfeit miracles] and [deceptive] signs and false wonders [all of them lies], 10 and by unlimited seduction to evil and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love of the truth [of the gospel] so as to be saved [they were spiritually blind, and rejected the truth that would have saved them]. 11 Because of this God will send upon them a misleading influence, [an activity of error and deception] so they will believe the lie, 12 in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth [about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ], but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we should and are [morally] obligated [as debtors] always to give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the [e]sanctifying work of the Spirit [that sets you apart for God’s purpose] and by your faith in the truth [of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity]. 14 It was to this end that He called you through our gospel [the good news of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection], so that you may obtain and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, [f]brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold [tightly] to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and encouragement and the good [well-founded] hope [of salvation] by His grace, 17 comfort and encourage and strengthen your hearts [keeping them steadfast and on course] in every good work and word.

2 Ora, irmãos, rogamo-vos, pela vinda de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e pela nossa reunião com ele, 2 que não vos movais facilmente do vosso entendimento, nem vos perturbeis, quer por espírito, quer por palavra, quer por epístola, como de nós, como se o Dia de Cristo estivesse já perto. 3 Ninguém, de maneira alguma, vos engane, porque não será assim sem que antes venha a apostasia e se manifeste o homem do pecado, o filho da perdição, 4 o qual se opõe e se levanta contra tudo o que se chama Deus ou se adora; de sorte que se assentará, como Deus, no templo de Deus, querendo parecer Deus. 5 Não vos lembrais de que estas coisas vos dizia quando ainda estava convosco? 6 E, agora, vós sabeis o que o detém, para que a seu próprio tempo seja manifestado.

7 Porque já o mistério da injustiça opera; somente há um que, agora, resiste até que do meio seja tirado; 8 e, então, será revelado o iníquo, a quem o Senhor desfará pelo assopro da sua boca e aniquilará pelo esplendor da sua vinda; 9 a esse cuja vinda é segundo a eficácia de Satanás, com todo o poder, e sinais, e prodígios de mentira, 10 e com todo engano da injustiça para os que perecem, porque não receberam o amor da verdade para se salvarem. 11 E, por isso, Deus lhes enviará a operação do erro, para que creiam a mentira, 12 para que sejam julgados todos os que não creram a verdade; antes, tiveram prazer na iniquidade.

13 Mas devemos sempre dar graças a Deus, por vós, irmãos amados do Senhor, por vos ter Deus elegido desde o princípio para a salvação, em santificação do Espírito e fé da verdade, 14 para o que, pelo nosso evangelho, vos chamou, para alcançardes a glória de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. 15 Então, irmãos, estai firmes e retende as tradições que vos foram ensinadas, seja por palavra, seja por epístola nossa.

16 E o próprio nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, e nosso Deus e Pai, que nos amou e em graça nos deu uma eterna consolação e boa esperança, 17 console o vosso coração e vos conforte em toda boa palavra e obra.

O Homem do Pecado

2 Irmãos, quanto à vinda de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e à nossa reunião com ele, rogamos a vocês 2 que não se deixem abalar nem alarmar tão facilmente, quer por profecia[a], quer por palavra, quer por carta supostamente vinda de nós, como se o dia do Senhor já tivesse chegado. 3 Não deixem que ninguém os engane de modo algum. Antes daquele dia virá a apostasia e, então, será revelado o homem do pecado[b], o filho da perdição. 4 Este se opõe e se exalta acima de tudo o que se chama Deus ou é objeto de adoração, chegando até a assentar-se no santuário de Deus, proclamando que ele mesmo é Deus.

5 Não se lembram de que quando eu ainda estava com vocês costumava lhes falar essas coisas? 6 E agora vocês sabem o que o está detendo, para que ele seja revelado no seu devido tempo. 7 A verdade é que o mistério da iniqüidade já está em ação, restando apenas que seja afastado aquele que agora o detém. 8 Então será revelado o perverso, a quem o Senhor Jesus matará com o sopro de sua boca e destruirá pela manifestação de sua vinda. 9 A vinda desse perverso é segundo a ação de Satanás, com todo o poder, com sinais e com maravilhas enganadoras. 10 Ele fará uso de todas as formas de engano da injustiça para os que estão perecendo, porquanto rejeitaram o amor à verdade que os poderia salvar. 11 Por essa razão Deus lhes envia um poder sedutor, a fim de que creiam na mentira, 12 e sejam condenados todos os que não creram na verdade, mas tiveram prazer na injustiça.

Exortação à Perseverança

13 Mas nós devemos sempre dar graças a Deus por vocês, irmãos amados pelo Senhor, porque desde o princípio Deus os escolheu[c] para serem salvos mediante a obra santificadora do Espírito e a fé na verdade. 14 Ele os chamou para isso por meio de nosso evangelho, a fim de tomarem posse da glória de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. 15 Portanto, irmãos, permaneçam firmes e apeguem-se às tradições que lhes foram ensinadas, quer de viva voz, quer por carta nossa.

16 Que o próprio Senhor Jesus Cristo e Deus nosso Pai, que nos amou e nos deu eterna consolação e boa esperança pela graça, 17 dêem ânimo ao coração de vocês e os fortaleçam para fazerem sempre o bem, tanto em atos como em palavras.
