When the Syrians of Damascus sent an army to help King Hadadezer, David attacked it and killed twenty-two thousand men. Then he set up military camps in[a] their territory, and they became his subjects and paid taxes to him. The Lord made David victorious everywhere. David captured the gold shields carried by Hadadezer's officials and took them to Jerusalem.

When the Arameans of Damascus(A) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. He put garrisons(B) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(C) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(D)

David took the gold shields(E) that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.
