And when [a]the Syrians of Damascus came to succor Hadadezer king of Zobah, David smote of [b]the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. Then David put garrisons in [c]Syria of Damascus; and [d]the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. And Jehovah [e]gave victory to David whithersoever he went. And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

When the Arameans of Damascus(A) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. He put garrisons(B) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(C) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(D)

David took the gold shields(E) that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.
