That day David said, “Whoever wants to defeat the Jebusites must reach the lame and the blind who hate me by using the water shaft.” So there is a saying, “The blind and the lame will not get into the palace.” [a] David lived in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built the city ⌞of Jerusalem⌟ around it from the Millo [b] to the palace. 10 David continued to grow more powerful because the Lord God [c] of Armies was with him.

On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft(A) to reach those ‘lame and blind’(B) who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces[b](C) inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful,(D) because the Lord God Almighty(E) was with him.(F)
