David’s Song of Praise
22 David sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. 2 He sang:
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
3 my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my savior,
the one who saves me from violence.
4 I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and he saved me from my enemies.
5 “The waves of death overwhelmed me;
floods of destruction swept over me.
6 The grave[a] wrapped its ropes around me;
death laid a trap in my path.
7 But in my distress I cried out to the Lord;
yes, I cried to my God for help.
He heard me from his sanctuary;
my cry reached his ears.
8 “Then the earth quaked and trembled.
The foundations of the heavens shook;
they quaked because of his anger.
9 Smoke poured from his nostrils;
fierce flames leaped from his mouth.
Glowing coals blazed forth from him.
10 He opened the heavens and came down;
dark storm clouds were beneath his feet.
11 Mounted on a mighty angelic being,[b] he flew,
soaring[c] on the wings of the wind.
12 He shrouded himself in darkness,
veiling his approach with dense rain clouds.
13 A great brightness shone around him,
and burning coals[d] blazed forth.
14 The Lord thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.
15 He shot arrows and scattered his enemies;
his lightning flashed, and they were confused.
16 Then at the command of the Lord,
at the blast of his breath,
the bottom of the sea could be seen,
and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.
17 “He reached down from heaven and rescued me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
18 He rescued me from my powerful enemies,
from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
19 They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress,
but the Lord supported me.
20 He led me to a place of safety;
he rescued me because he delights in me.
21 The Lord rewarded me for doing right;
he restored me because of my innocence.
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I have not turned from my God to follow evil.
23 I have followed all his regulations;
I have never abandoned his decrees.
24 I am blameless before God;
I have kept myself from sin.
25 The Lord rewarded me for doing right.
He has seen my innocence.
26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful;
to those with integrity you show integrity.
27 To the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
28 You rescue the humble,
but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.
29 O Lord, you are my lamp.
The Lord lights up my darkness.
30 In your strength I can crush an army;
with my God I can scale any wall.
31 “God’s way is perfect.
All the Lord’s promises prove true.
He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
32 For who is God except the Lord?
Who but our God is a solid rock?
33 God is my strong fortress,
and he makes my way perfect.
34 He makes me as surefooted as a deer,
enabling me to stand on mountain heights.
35 He trains my hands for battle;
he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.
36 You have given me your shield of victory;
your help[e] has made me great.
37 You have made a wide path for my feet
to keep them from slipping.
38 “I chased my enemies and destroyed them;
I did not stop until they were conquered.
39 I consumed them;
I struck them down so they did not get up;
they fell beneath my feet.
40 You have armed me with strength for the battle;
you have subdued my enemies under my feet.
41 You placed my foot on their necks.
I have destroyed all who hated me.
42 They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue.
They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer.
43 I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth;
I trampled them[f] in the gutter like dirt.
44 “You gave me victory over my accusers.
You preserved me as the ruler over nations;
people I don’t even know now serve me.
45 Foreign nations cringe before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they submit.
46 They all lose their courage
and come trembling[g] from their strongholds.
47 “The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock!
May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted!
48 He is the God who pays back those who harm me;
he brings down the nations under me
49 and delivers me from my enemies.
You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies;
you save me from violent opponents.
50 For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations;
I will sing praises to your name.
51 You give great victories to your king;
you show unfailing love to your anointed,
to David and all his descendants forever.”
David’s Last Words
23 These are the last words of David:
“David, the son of Jesse, speaks—
David, the man who was raised up so high,
David, the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
David, the sweet psalmist of Israel.[h]
2 “The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me;
his words are upon my tongue.
3 The God of Israel spoke.
The Rock of Israel said to me:
‘The one who rules righteously,
who rules in the fear of God,
4 is like the light of morning at sunrise,
like a morning without clouds,
like the gleaming of the sun
on new grass after rain.’
5 “Is it not my family God has chosen?
Yes, he has made an everlasting covenant with me.
His agreement is arranged and guaranteed in every detail.
He will ensure my safety and success.
6 But the godless are like thorns to be thrown away,
for they tear the hand that touches them.
7 One must use iron tools to chop them down;
they will be totally consumed by fire.”
David’s Mightiest Warriors
8 These are the names of David’s mightiest warriors. The first was Jashobeam the Hacmonite,[i] who was leader of the Three[j]—the three mightiest warriors among David’s men. He once used his spear to kill 800 enemy warriors in a single battle.[k]
9 Next in rank among the Three was Eleazar son of Dodai, a descendant of Ahoah. Once Eleazar and David stood together against the Philistines when the entire Israelite army had fled. 10 He killed Philistines until his hand was too tired to lift his sword, and the Lord gave him a great victory that day. The rest of the army did not return until it was time to collect the plunder!
11 Next in rank was Shammah son of Agee from Harar. One time the Philistines gathered at Lehi and attacked the Israelites in a field full of lentils. The Israelite army fled, 12 but Shammah[l] held his ground in the middle of the field and beat back the Philistines. So the Lord brought about a great victory.
13 Once during the harvest, when David was at the cave of Adullam, the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim. The Three (who were among the Thirty—an elite group among David’s fighting men) went down to meet him there. 14 David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.
15 David remarked longingly to his men, “Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem.” 16 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew some water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord. 17 “The Lord forbid that I should drink this!” he exclaimed. “This water is as precious as the blood of these men[m] who risked their lives to bring it to me.” So David did not drink it. These are examples of the exploits of the Three.
David’s Thirty Mighty Men
18 Abishai son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, was the leader of the Thirty.[n] He once used his spear to kill 300 enemy warriors in a single battle. It was by such feats that he became as famous as the Three. 19 Abishai was the most famous of the Thirty[o] and was their commander, though he was not one of the Three.
20 There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior[p] from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions[q] of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. 21 Once, armed only with a club, he killed an imposing Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with it. 22 Deeds like these made Benaiah as famous as the Three mightiest warriors. 23 He was more honored than the other members of the Thirty, though he was not one of the Three. And David made him captain of his bodyguard.

22 Nagaawit si David ngadto sa Ginoo sa dihang giluwas siya sa Ginoo gikan sa iyang mga kaaway ug kang Saul. 2-3 Mao kini ang iyang awit:
“Ikaw, Ginoo, ang akong salipdanan nga bato,
ang akong lig-ong tagoanan ug manluluwas.
Ingon nga salipdanan nga bato, makatago ako kanimo.
Ikaw ang akong taming ug gamhanan nga manluluwas.
Ikaw ang akong dalangpanan ug tagoanan.
Ikaw ang nagaluwas kanako gikan sa bangis nga mga tawo.
4 Dalaygon ka, Ginoo, kay kon mangayo ako ug tabang kanimo ginaluwas mo ako gikan sa akong mga kaaway.
5 Ang kamatayon daw balod nga mikuso-kuso kanako.
Ang kalaglagan daw sulog sa baha nga mianod kanako.
6 Ang kamatayon daw pisi nga milambod kanako ug daw lit-ag nga nagaatang sa akong agianan.
7 Sa akong kalisdanan nagpakitabang ako kanimo, Ginoo, nga akong Dios,
ug gidungog mo ang akong pag-ampo didto sa imong templo.
8 “Unya milinog, ug ang mga pundasyon sa mga bukid nauyog,
tungod kay nasuko ka, Ginoo.
9 Nanggawas ang aso sa imong ilong,
ug sa imong baba nanggawas ang nagadilaab nga kalayo ug mga baga.
10 Giablihan mo ang langit,
ug nanaog ka nga nagatungtong sa mabagang dag-om.
11 Nagsakay ka sa kerubin, ug tulin kining milupad samtang gipalid sa hangin.
12 Gihimo mo ang kangitngit nga mosalipod kanimo.
Nagtago ka sa mabagang dag-om.
13 Gikan sa kahayag diha sa imong atubangan, nanggawas ang nagadilaab nga mga baga.
14 Ang tingog mo Ginoo, nga Labing Halangdong Dios, nagdahunog gikan sa langit.
15 Gipana mo ug kilat ang imong mga kaaway
ug miikyas sila nga nagkatibulaag.
16 Sa imong pagngulob ug pagpangusmo sa kasuko mimala ang dagat, ug nakita ang yuta ilalom niini, ug nakita usab ang pundasyon sa kalibotan.
17 Gikan sa langit gigunitan mo ako ug gihaw-as gikan sa lawom nga tubig.
18 Giluwas mo ako gikan sa akong gamhanang mga kaaway nga naglagot kanako, kay wala akoy dag-anan kanila.
19 Gisulong nila ako sa dihang anaa ako sa kalisod,
apan gipanalipdan mo ako, Ginoo.
20 Giluwas mo ako sa katalagman kay nalipay ka kanako.
21 Gipanalanginan mo ako tungod kay matarong ang akong kinabuhi
ug wala ako magpakasala.
22 Kay gisunod ko ang imong mga pamaagi
ug wala ako mobiya kanimo Ginoo, nga akong Dios.
23 Gituman ko ang tanan mong sugo
ug wala ko lapasa ang imong mga tulumanon.
24 Nahibalo ka nga walay ikasaway sa akong kinabuhi
ug gilikayan ko ang pagpakasala.
25 Gigantihan mo ako tungod kay nakita mo nga matarong ang akong kinabuhi
ug wala akoy nahimong sala.
26 Matinumanon ka sa mga matinumanon kanimo,
ug maayo ka usab sa mga tawo nga maayo.
27 Matinud-anon ka sa mga tawo nga matinud-anon kanimo,
apan makigbatok ka sa mga tawong daotan.
28 Oo, ginaluwas mo ang mga mapainubsanon,
apan ginapaubos mo ang mga mapahitas-on.
29 “Ginoo, ikaw ang akong kahayag.
Sa kangitngit, ikaw ang akong suga.
30 Sa imong tabang sulongon ko ang panon sa mga sundalo
ug mahimo kong katkaton ang paril nga nagalibot sa lungsod.
31 Hingpit ang imong pamaagi, O Dios.
Ang imong pulong kasaligan gayod.
Sama ka sa taming alang sa tanang nagadangop kanimo.
32 Ikaw lang, Ginoo, ang Dios;
ikaw lang ang among salipdanan nga bato.
33 Ikaw ang nagahatag kanako ug kusog[a]
ug ang nagabantay sa akong paglakaw.
34 Ginalig-on mo ang akong tiil sama sa tiil sa usa,
aron makalatas ako sa habog nga mga dapit.
35 Ginabansay mo ako sa pagpakiggira.
Ang akong mga bukton makabinat na sa bronsi nga pana.
36 Sama ikaw sa taming nga nagapanalipod kanako,
ug pinaagi sa imong tabang nahimo akong bantogan.
37 Gipalapdan mo ang akong agianan,
busa wala ako madakin-as.
38 Gigukod ko ang akong mga kaaway ug napildi ko sila.
Ug wala gayod ako mobalik hangtod nga nalaglag ko sila.
39 Gilaglag ko sila hangtod nga nangalup-og sila sa akong tiilan ug dili na makabangon pa.
40 Gihatagan mo ako ug kusog sa pagpakiggira
ug gipadaog batok sa akong mga kaaway.
41 Gipakagiw mo ang akong mga kaaway
ug gilaglag ko sila.
42 Nangayo sila ug tabang,
apan walay miluwas kanila.
Nanawag sila kanimo,
apan wala mo sila tubaga.
43 Gidugmok ko sila hangtod nahisama na lang sila sa abog.
Gitunob-tunoban ko sila nga daw lapok sa kadalanan.
44 Giluwas mo ako gikan sa mga nagarebelde kong katawhan.
Gihimo mo akong pangulo sa mga kanasoran.
Ang mga langyaw nagaalagad kanako.
45 Nagayukbo sila kanako,
ug inigkadungog nila bahin kanako, nagatuman sila sa akong mando.
46 Nawad-an silag kaisog,
ug nanggawas sa ilang mga tagoanan nga nagakurog sa kahadlok.
47 Buhi ka, Ginoo!
Dalaygon ka nga akong salipdanan nga bato!
Gibayaw ko ikaw tungod kay ikaw ang Dios nga akong Manluluwas.
48 Gipanimalos mo ako sa akong mga kaaway
ug gipasakop mo kanako ang mga kanasoran.
49 Ginaluwas mo ako gikan sa akong mabangis nga mga kaaway,
ug ginapadaog mo ako batok kanila.
50 Busa pasidunggan ko ikaw taliwala sa mga kanasoran, O Ginoo.
Ug awitan ko ikaw ug mga pagdayeg.
51 Ginahatagan mo ug dagkong mga kadaogan ang imong pinili nga hari.
Gihigugma mo si David ug ang iyang mga kaliwat sa walay kataposan.”
Ang Kataposang mga Pulong ni David
23 Si David nga anak ni Jesse gihimong bantogan sa Labing Halangdong Dios. Gipili siya sa Dios ni Jacob nga mahimong hari, ug siya ang nagsulat sa maanindot nga mga awit sa taga-Israel. Mao kini ang kataposan niyang mga pulong:
2 “Nagsulti ang Espiritu sa Ginoo pinaagi kanako;
ang iyang mga pulong anaa sa akong baba.
3 Miingon kanako ang Dios, ang salipdanan nga bato sa Israel:
‘Ang tawong nagadumala nga matarong ug may kahadlok sa Dios,
4 sama siya sa kahayag sa adlaw nga nagasidlak kon buntag nga walay panganod,
nga mopasidlak sa mga sagbot nga giulanan!’
5 Ingon gayod niana ang akong pamilya[b] sa panan-aw sa Dios,
kay naghimo siyag kasabotan nga walay kataposan uban kanako.
Kini nga kasabotan maayo ang pagkahan-ay ug dili mausab.
Busa sigurado ako nga luwason ako kanunay sa Dios
ug ihatag niya kanako ang tanan kong gipangandoy.
6-7 Apan ang daotang mga tawo sama sa tunokon nga mga sagbot nga angay ilabay.
Dili sila maibot pinaagi sa kamot lang kondili kinahanglan pa nga mogamit ug puthaw o kahoy.
Ug sunogon sila sa dapit mismo nga ilang nahimutangan.”
Ang Maisog nga mga Tawo ni David
(1 Cro. 11:10-41)
8 Mao kini ang maisog nga mga tawo ni David:
Si Josheb Bashebet nga taga-Takemon, nga mao ang nagapangulo sa tulo ka maisog nga mga tawo ni David. Sa usa lang ka gira, nakapatay siyag 800 ka mga tawo pinaagi sa iyang bangkaw.
9 Ang sunod kaniya mao si Eleazar nga anak ni Dodai nga kaliwat ni Ahoa, nga usa usab sa tulo ka maisog nga mga tawo ni David. Usa siya sa mga kauban ni David nga mihagit sa mga Filistihanon nga nagtigom sa Pas Damim[c] aron sa pagpakiggira. Nangikyas ang mga Israelinhon, 10 apan siya nagpabilin ug gipamatay niya ang mga Filistihanon hangtod nga gikapoy ang iyang kamot ug namikog kini nga daw dili na makabuhi sa espada. Gipadaog sila sa Ginoo niadtong adlawa. Ang nangikyas nga mga Israelinhon namalik didto kang Eleazar aron pagkuha na lang sa mga armas sa mga nangamatay.
11 Ang sunod mao si Shama nga anak ni Agee nga taga-Harar. Usa ka higayon, nagtigom ang mga Filistihanon sa Lehi, ug gisulong nila ang mga Israelinhon dapit sa uma nga puno sa balatong. Nangikyas ang mga Israelinhon, 12 apan si Shama nagpabilin taliwala sa uma ug iya kining gipanalipdan. Gipatay niya ang mga Filistihanon ug gipadaog sila sa Ginoo niadtong adlawa.
13 Usa ka higayon sa panahon sa ting-ani, miadto kang David ang tulo niya ka tawo didto sa langub sa Adulam. Kining tulo ka tawo miyembro sa 30 ka maisog nga mga tawo ni David. Nagkampo ang mga Filistihanon sa Kapatagan sa Refaim 14 ug nailog nila ang Betlehem. Samtang didto si David sa kuta, 15 giuhaw siya. Miingon siya, “Maayo unta kon may mokuha alang kanako ug tubig nga mainom didto sa atabay duol sa pultahan sa Betlehem.” 16 Busa hilom nga misulod kadtong tulo ka maisog nga mga tawo sa kampo sa mga Filistihanon sa Betlehem, ug mikuha ug tubig gikan sa atabay ug gidala kang David. Apan wala moinom si David, iya hinuon kining giyabo ingon nga halad sa Ginoo. 17 Miingon siya, “Ginoo, dili ko gayod kini mainom tungod kay sama kini kamahal sa dugo sa mga tawo nga misugal sa ilang kinabuhi aron lang sa pagkuha niini.” Busa wala gayod moinom si David.
Mao kadto ang gipanghimo sa tulo ka maisog nga mga tawo ni David.
18 Si Abishai nga igsoon ni Joab, nga anak ni Zeruya mao ang pangulo sa 30[d] ka maisog nga mga tawo ni David. Nakapatay siya ug 300 ka mga Filistihanon pinaagi sa iyang bangkaw. Busa nahimo siyang bantogan sama sa tulo ka maisog nga mga tawo. 19 Ug tungod kay mas bantogan siya kay sa 30,[e] nahimo siyang ilang komander, apan dili siya kauban niadtong tulo ka maisog.
20 May usa pa ka maisog nga tawo nga ginganlan ug Benaya. Taga-Kabsel siya, ug ang iyang amahan si Jehoyada. Nakahimo siya ug pinasahi nga mga buhat, apil na ang pagpatay sa duha ka pinakamaayo nga sundalo sa Moab. Sa usa usab ka higayon, gigukod niya ang usa ka liyon. Bisan nagasnow ug danlog, nanaog siya sa bangag ug gipatay niya ang liyon. 21 Sa lain usab nga higayon, gipatay niya ang usa ka Ehiptohanon nga labihan kadako. Ang armas sa Ehiptohanon bangkaw, apan ang iyang armas bunal lang. Giilog niya ang bangkaw sa Ehiptohanon ug maoy gipatay niya sa Ehiptohanon. 22 Mao kadto ang mga binuhatan ni Benaya nga anak ni Jehoyada. Nahimo usab siyang sama kabantugan niadtong tulo ka maisog nga mga sakop ni David, 23 apan dili siya usa kanila. Nahimo siyang mas bantogan kay sa iyang 30 ka mga kauban, ug gihimo siya ni David nga pangulo sa iyang mga personal nga guwardya.
