38 (A)So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years. 39 And the spirit of the king[a] longed to go out[b] to Absalom, because (B)he was comforted about Amnon, since he was dead.

Absalom Returns to Jerusalem

14 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah knew (C)that the king's heart went out to Absalom. And Joab sent to (D)Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman and said to her, “Pretend to be a mourner and put on mourning garments. (E)Do not anoint yourself with oil, but behave like a woman who has been mourning many days for the dead. Go to the king and speak thus to him.” So Joab (F)put the words in her mouth.

When the woman of Tekoa came to the king, (G)she fell on her face to the ground and paid homage and said, (H)“Save me, O king.” And the king said to her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, (I)“Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead. And your servant had two sons, and they quarreled with one another in the field. There was no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him. And now the whole clan has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.’ And so they would (J)destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal that is left and leave to my husband neither name nor (K)remnant on the face of the earth.”

Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you.” And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, (L)“On me be the guilt, my lord the king, and on my father's house; let the king and his throne be guiltless.” 10 The king said, “If anyone says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall never touch you again.” 11 Then she said, “Please let the king invoke the Lord your God, that (M)the avenger of blood kill no more, and my son be not destroyed.” He said, (N)“As the Lord lives, (O)not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”

12 Then the woman said, “Please let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Speak.” 13 And the woman said, “Why then have you planned such a thing against (P)the people of God? For in giving this decision the king convicts himself, inasmuch as the king does not bring (Q)his banished one home again. 14 We must all die; we are (R)like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means (S)so that the banished one will not remain an outcast. 15 Now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid, and your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant. 16 For the king will hear and deliver his servant from the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together from (T)the heritage of God.’ 17 And your servant thought, ‘The word of my lord the king will set me at rest,’ for my lord the king is (U)like the angel of God to discern good and evil. The Lord your God be with you!”

18 Then the king answered the woman, “Do not hide from me anything I ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king speak.” 19 The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered and said, (V)“As surely as you live, my lord the king, one cannot turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has said. It was your servant Joab who commanded me; (W)it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your servant. 20 In order to change the course of things your servant Joab did this. But my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of (X)the angel of God to know all things that are on the earth.”

21 Then the king said to Joab, “Behold now, I grant this; go, bring back the young man Absalom.” 22 And Joab fell on his face to the ground and paid homage (Y)and blessed the king. And Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant.” 23 So Joab arose and went to (Z)Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 And the king said, “Let him dwell apart in his own house; he is not to come into my presence.” So Absalom lived apart in his own house and did not come into the king's presence.

The king asked her, “What is troubling you?”

She said, “I am a widow; my husband is dead. I your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him. Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant; they say, ‘Hand over the one who struck his brother down, so that we may put him to death(H) for the life of his brother whom he killed; then we will get rid of the heir(I) as well.’ They would put out the only burning coal I have left,(J) leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth.”

The king said to the woman, “Go home,(K) and I will issue an order in your behalf.”

But the woman from Tekoa said to him, “Let my lord the king pardon(L) me and my family,(M) and let the king and his throne be without guilt.(N)

10 The king replied, “If anyone says anything to you, bring them to me, and they will not bother you again.”

11 She said, “Then let the king invoke the Lord his God to prevent the avenger(O) of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be destroyed.”

“As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “not one hair(P) of your son’s head will fall to the ground.(Q)

12 Then the woman said, “Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.”

“Speak,” he replied.

13 The woman said, “Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself,(R) for the king has not brought back his banished son?(S) 14 Like water(T) spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die.(U) But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person(V) does not remain banished from him.

15 “And now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; perhaps he will grant his servant’s request. 16 Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’(W)

17 “And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king secure my inheritance, for my lord the king is like an angel(X) of God in discerning(Y) good and evil. May the Lord your God be with you.’”

18 Then the king said to the woman, “Don’t keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you.”

“Let my lord the king speak,” the woman said.

19 The king asked, “Isn’t the hand of Joab(Z) with you in all this?”

The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant. 20 Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom(AA) like that of an angel of God—he knows everything that happens in the land.(AB)

21 The king said to Joab, “Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.”

22 Joab fell with his face to the ground to pay him honor, and he blessed the king.(AC) Joab said, “Today your servant knows that he has found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, because the king has granted his servant’s request.”

23 Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. 24 But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.

Principles for Marriage

Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: (A)“It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. (B)The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. (C)Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, (D)so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Now as a concession, (E)not a command, I say this.[a] (F)I wish that all were (G)as I myself am. But (H)each has his own gift from God, (I)one of one kind and one of another.

To the unmarried and the widows I say that (J)it is good for them to remain single, (K)as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, (L)they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 To the married (M)I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): (N)the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, (O)she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and (P)the husband should not divorce his wife.

12 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. 13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. (Q)Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you[b] (R)to peace. 16 For how do you know, wife, (S)whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

Live as You Are Called

17 Only let each person lead the life[c] (T)that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. (U)This is my rule in (V)all the churches. 18 Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? (W)Let him not seek circumcision. 19 (X)For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but (Y)keeping the commandments of God. 20 (Z)Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. 21 Were you a bondservant[d] when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) 22 For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is (AA)a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is (AB)a bondservant of Christ. 23 (AC)You were bought with a price; (AD)do not become bondservants of men. 24 So, brothers,[e] (AE)in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.

The Unmarried and the Widowed

25 Now concerning[f] the betrothed,[g] (AF)I have no command from the Lord, but I give my judgment as (AG)one who by the Lord's mercy is (AH)trustworthy. 26 I think that in view of the present[h] distress (AI)it is good for a person to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman[i] marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. 29 This is what I mean, brothers: (AJ)the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy (AK)as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For (AL)the present form of this world is passing away.

32 I want you to be (AM)free from anxieties. (AN)The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, (AO)not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed,[j] if his[k] passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin. 37 But whoever is firmly established in his heart, being under no necessity but having his desire under control, and has determined this in his heart, to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well. 38 So then he who marries his betrothed (AP)does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.

39 (AQ)A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only (AR)in the Lord. 40 Yet (AS)in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think (AT)that I too have the Spirit of God.

Concerning Married Life

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”(A) But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. Concerning Change of Status

17 Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.(R) This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.(S) 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised.(T) 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.(U) Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20 Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(V)

21 Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22 For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person;(W) similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave.(X) 23 You were bought at a price;(Y) do not become slaves of human beings. 24 Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(Z)

Concerning the Unmarried

25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord,(AA) but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy(AB) is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.(AC) 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.(AD) 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned;(AE) and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.

29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.(AF) From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.(AG)

32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs(AH)—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.(AI) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided(AJ) devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[b] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning.(AK) They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right,(AL) but he who does not marry her does better.[c]

39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.(AM) But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.(AN) 40 In my judgment,(AO) she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

28 So Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, without coming into the king's presence. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. And he sent a second time, but Joab would not come. 30 Then he said to his servants, “See, Joab's field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire.” So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.[b] 31 Then Joab arose and went to Absalom at his house and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?” 32 Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent word to you, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to ask, “Why have I come from (D)Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still.” Now therefore let me go into the presence of the king, (E)and if there is guilt in me, let him put me to death.’” 33 Then Joab went to the king and told him, and he summoned Absalom. Absalom's Conspiracy

15 After this Absalom (F)got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him. And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside (G)the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,” Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.” Then Absalom would say, (H)“Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.” And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

And at the end of four[c] years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron. For your servant (I)vowed a vow (J)while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to[d] the Lord.’” The king said to him, (K)“Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron. 10 But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’” 11 With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem (L)who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing. 12 And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for[e] (M)Ahithophel the Gilonite, (N)David's counselor, from his city (O)Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom (P)kept increasing.

25 In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. Absalom’s Conspiracy

15 In the course of time,(I) Absalom provided himself with a chariot(J) and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate.(K) Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”(L) And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land!(M) Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”

Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts(N) of the people of Israel.

At the end of four[b] years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord. While your servant was living at Geshur(O) in Aram, I made this vow:(P) ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.[c]’”

The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.

10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets,(Q) then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’” 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. (C)It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as (D)Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 (E)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and (F)condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (G)something greater than Solomon is here. 32 (H)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and (I)condemn it, for (J)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (K)something greater than Jonah is here.

The Light in You

33 (L)“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is (M)the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is (N)bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 (O)Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, (P)as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 While Jesus[a] was speaking, (Q)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (R)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (S)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (T)greed and wickedness. 40 (U)You fools! (V)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (W)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (X)everything is clean for you.

42 (Y)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (Z)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (AA)justice and (AB)the love of God. (AC)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (AD)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (AE)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 One of (AF)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (AG)lawyers also! For (AH)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (AI)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (AJ)So you are witnesses and you (AK)consent to the deeds of (AL)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (AM)the Wisdom of God said, (AN)‘I will send them (AO)prophets and apostles, (AP)some of whom they will (AQ)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (AR)the blood of all the prophets, shed (AS)from the foundation of the world, may be (AT)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (AU)Abel to the blood of (AV)Zechariah, who perished between (AW)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (AX)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (AY)lawyers! (AZ)For you have taken away the key of (BA)knowledge. You (BB)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (BC)lying in wait for him, (BD)to catch him in something he might say.

The Sign of Jonah(A)

The Lamp of the Body(F)

Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(G) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[a] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[b] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(H) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(I)

39 Then the Lord(J) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(K) 40 You foolish people!(L) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(M) and everything will be clean for you.(N)

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(O) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(P) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(Q)

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(R)

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(S) which people walk over without knowing it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(T) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(U)

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(V) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(W) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(X) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(Y) to the blood of Zechariah,(Z) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(AA)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(AB)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(AC)
