So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, (A)from Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that (B)I may know the number of the people.”

And Joab said to the king, “Now may the Lord your God (C)add to the people a hundred times more than there are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king desire this thing?” Nevertheless the king’s word [a]prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Therefore Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

And they crossed over the Jordan and camped in (D)Aroer, on the right side of the town which is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, and toward (E)Jazer. Then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; they came to (F)Dan Jaan and around to (G)Sidon; and they came to the stronghold of (H)Tyre and to all the cities of the (I)Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went out to South Judah as far as Beersheba. So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. Then Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to the king. (J)And there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

The Judgment on David’s Sin(K)

10 And (L)David’s heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. So (M)David said to the Lord, (N)“I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray, O Lord, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have (O)done very foolishly.”

11 Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet (P)Gad, David’s (Q)seer, saying, 12 “Go and tell David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.” ’ ” 13 So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him, “Shall (R)seven[b] years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”

14 And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, (S)for His mercies are great; but (T)do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

15 So (U)the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died.

So the king said to Joab(A) and the army commanders[a] with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba(B) and enroll(C) the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.”

But Joab(D) replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over,(E) and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”

The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.

After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer,(F) south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer.(G) They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon.(H) Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre(I) and all the towns of the Hivites(J) and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba(K) in the Negev(L) of Judah.

After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.(M)

10 David was conscience-stricken(N) after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned(O) greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.(P)

11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad(Q) the prophet, David’s seer:(R) 12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”

13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three[b] years of famine(S) in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague(T) in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”

14 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(U) is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

15 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.(V)
