The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the [a]elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be [b]burned up. 11 Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness, 12 looking for and [c]earnestly desiring the [d]coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the [e]elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(A) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(B) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(C)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(D) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(E) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(F) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](G)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(H) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](I) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(J) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(K) where righteousness dwells.

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(L) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(M) means salvation,(N) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(O)
