17 (A)These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. (B)For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18 For, (C)speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely (D)escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them (E)freedom, (F)but they themselves are slaves[a] of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, (G)after they have escaped the defilements of the world (H)through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, (I)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For (J)it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from (K)the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The (L)dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

The Day of the Lord Will Come

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them (M)I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, (N)that you should remember the predictions of (O)the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come (P)in the last days with scoffing, (Q)following their own sinful desires. (R)They will say, “Where is the promise of (S)his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth (T)was formed out of water and through water (U)by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed (V)was deluged with water and (W)perished. But by the same word (X)the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and (Y)destruction of the ungodly.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (Z)a thousand years as one day. (AA)The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise (AB)as some count slowness, but (AC)is patient toward you,[b] (AD)not wishing that any should perish, but (AE)that all should reach repentance. 10 But (AF)the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then (AG)the heavens will pass away with a roar, and (AH)the heavenly bodies[c] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.[d]

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, (AI)what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 (AJ)waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and (AK)the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!

17 These people are springs without water(A) and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.(B) 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words(C) and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping(D) from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”(E) 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing(F) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(G) and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.(H) 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.(I) 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”[a](J) and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”

The Day of the Lord

Dear friends,(K) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(L) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(M) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(N)

Above all, you must understand that in the last days(O) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(P) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(Q) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(R) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(S) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(T) By these waters also the world of that time(U) was deluged and destroyed.(V) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(W) being kept for the day of judgment(X) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(Y) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(Z) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(AA) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(AB)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(AC) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(AD) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(AE) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[b](AF)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(AG) to the day of God and speed its coming.[c](AH) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(AI)
