False Prophets and Teachers

But (A)false prophets also arose among the people, (B)just as there will be false teachers among you, who will (C)secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master (D)who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth (E)will be blasphemed. And (F)in their greed they will exploit you (G)with false words. (H)Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

For if God did not spare (I)angels when they sinned, but (J)cast them into hell[a] and committed them to chains[b] of gloomy darkness (K)to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but (L)preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought (M)a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by (N)turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, (O)making them an example of (P)what is going to happen to the ungodly;[c] and (Q)if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, (R)he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then (S)the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,[d] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially (T)those who indulge[e] in the lust of defiling passion and (U)despise authority.

Bold and willful, they do not tremble (V)as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 (W)whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. 12 (X)But these, like irrational animals, (Y)creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, 13 suffering wrong as (Z)the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure (AA)to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions,[f] while (AB)they feast with you. 14 They have eyes full of adultery,[g] (AC)insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts (AD)trained in greed. (AE)Accursed children! 15 Forsaking the right way, (AF)they have gone astray. They have followed (AG)the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved (AH)gain from wrongdoing, 16 but was rebuked for his own transgression; (AI)a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

17 (AJ)These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. (AK)For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18 For, (AL)speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely (AM)escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them (AN)freedom, (AO)but they themselves are slaves[h] of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, (AP)after they have escaped the defilements of the world (AQ)through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, (AR)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For (AS)it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from (AT)the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The (AU)dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

The Day of the Lord Will Come

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them (AV)I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, (AW)that you should remember the predictions of (AX)the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come (AY)in the last days with scoffing, (AZ)following their own sinful desires. (BA)They will say, “Where is the promise of (BB)his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth (BC)was formed out of water and through water (BD)by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed (BE)was deluged with water and (BF)perished. But by the same word (BG)the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and (BH)destruction of the ungodly.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (BI)a thousand years as one day. (BJ)The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise (BK)as some count slowness, but (BL)is patient toward you,[i] (BM)not wishing that any should perish, but (BN)that all should reach repentance. 10 But (BO)the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then (BP)the heavens will pass away with a roar, and (BQ)the heavenly bodies[j] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.[k]

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, (BR)what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 (BS)waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and (BT)the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for (BU)new heavens and a new earth (BV)in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

14 (BW)Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him (BX)without spot or (BY)blemish, and (BZ)at peace. 15 And count (CA)the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as (CB)our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you (CC)according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. (CD)There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, (CE)as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, (CF)knowing this beforehand, (CG)take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But (CH)grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (CI)To him be the glory both now and to the day of (CJ)eternity. Amen.

The Word of Life

(CK)That which was (CL)from the beginning, (CM)which we have heard, (CN)which we have seen with our eyes, (CO)which we looked upon and (CP)have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— (CQ)the life (CR)was made manifest, and we have seen it, and (CS)testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, (CT)which was with the Father and (CU)was made manifest to us— (CV)that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed (CW)our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so (CX)that our[l] joy may be complete.

Walking in the Light

(CY)This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that (CZ)God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (DA)If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and (DB)do not practice the truth. But (DC)if we walk in the light, (DD)as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and (DE)the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (DF)If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and (DG)the truth is not in us. (DH)If we confess our sins, he is (DI)faithful and just to forgive us our sins and (DJ)to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, (DK)we make him a liar, and (DL)his word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, (DM)we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (DN)He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (DO)also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we (DP)keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments (DQ)is a liar, and (DR)the truth is not in him, but whoever (DS)keeps his word, in him truly (DT)the love of God is perfected. (DU)By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he (DV)abides in him (DW)ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

The New Commandment

Beloved, I am writing you (DX)no new commandment, but (DY)an old commandment (DZ)that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. At the same time, it is (EA)a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because[m] (EB)the darkness is passing away and (EC)the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and (ED)hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him[n] there is no (EE)cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and (EF)walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

12 I am writing to you, little children,
because (EG)your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know (EH)him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because (EI)you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
    because (EJ)you know the Father.
14 I write to you, fathers,
because you know (EK)him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because (EL)you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

Do Not Love the World

15 (EM)Do not love the world or the things in the world. (EN)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—(EO)the desires of the flesh and (EP)the desires of the eyes and pride of life[o]—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And (EQ)the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Warning Concerning Antichrists

18 Children, (ER)it is the last hour, and as you have heard that (ES)antichrist is coming, so now (ET)many antichrists have come. (EU)Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 (EV)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (EW)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, (EX)that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been (EY)anointed by (EZ)the Holy One, and (FA)you all have knowledge.[p] 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but (FB)he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is (FC)the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (FD)No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let (FE)what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then (FF)you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us[q](FG)eternal life.

26 I write these things to you about (FH)those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But (FI)the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and (FJ)you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and (FK)is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

Children of God

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that (FL)when he appears (FM)we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his (FN)coming. 29 If you know that (FO)he is righteous, you may be sure that (FP)everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

See (FQ)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called (FR)children of God; and so we are. The reason why (FS)the world does not know us is that (FT)it did not know him. Beloved, we are (FU)God's children (FV)now, and what we will be (FW)has not yet appeared; but we know that (FX)when he appears[r] (FY)we shall be like him, because (FZ)we shall see him as he is. And everyone who (GA)thus hopes in him (GB)purifies himself as he is pure.

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; (GC)sin is lawlessness. You know that (GD)he appeared in order to (GE)take away sins, and (GF)in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; (GG)no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, (GH)let no one deceive you. (GI)Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. (GJ)Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was (GK)to destroy the works of the devil. (GL)No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[s] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, (GM)nor is the one who (GN)does not love his brother.

False Teachers and Their Destruction

But there were also false prophets(A) among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.(B) They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord(C) who bought them(D)—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct(E) and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed(F) these teachers will exploit you(G) with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,(H) but sent them to hell,[a] putting them in chains of darkness[b] to be held for judgment;(I) if he did not spare the ancient world(J) when he brought the flood on its ungodly people,(K) but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;(L) if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,(M) and made them an example(N) of what is going to happen to the ungodly;(O) and if he rescued Lot,(P) a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless(Q) (for that righteous man,(R) living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials(S) and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.(T) 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire(U) of the flesh[c] and despise authority.

Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings;(V) 11 yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from[d] the Lord.(W) 12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.(X)

13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight.(Y) They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[e](Z) 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce(AA) the unstable;(AB) they are experts in greed(AC)—an accursed brood!(AD) 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam(AE) son of Bezer,[f] who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.(AF)

17 These people are springs without water(AG) and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.(AH) 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words(AI) and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping(AJ) from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”(AK) 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing(AL) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(AM) and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.(AN) 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.(AO) 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”[g](AP) and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”

The Day of the Lord

Dear friends,(AQ) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(AR) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(AS) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(AT)

Above all, you must understand that in the last days(AU) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(AV) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(AW) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(AX) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(AY) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(AZ) By these waters also the world of that time(BA) was deluged and destroyed.(BB) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(BC) being kept for the day of judgment(BD) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(BE) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(BF) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(BG) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(BH)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(BI) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(BJ) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(BK) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[h](BL)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(BM) to the day of God and speed its coming.[i](BN) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(BO) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(BP) where righteousness dwells.

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(BQ) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(BR) means salvation,(BS) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(BT) 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable(BU) people distort,(BV) as they do the other Scriptures,(BW) to their own destruction.

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard(BX) so that you may not be carried away by the error(BY) of the lawless(BZ) and fall from your secure position.(CA) 18 But grow in the grace(CB) and knowledge(CC) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(CD) To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.(CE)

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

That which was from the beginning,(CF) which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,(CG) which we have looked at and our hands have touched(CH)—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared;(CI) we have seen it and testify to it,(CJ) and we proclaim to you the eternal life,(CK) which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,(CL) so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.(CM) We write this(CN) to make our[j] joy complete.(CO)

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

This is the message we have heard(CP) from him and declare to you: God is light;(CQ) in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,(CR) we lie and do not live out the truth.(CS) But if we walk in the light,(CT) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[k] sin.(CU)

If we claim to be without sin,(CV) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.(CW) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins(CX) and purify us from all unrighteousness.(CY) 10 If we claim we have not sinned,(CZ) we make him out to be a liar(DA) and his word is not in us.(DB)

My dear children,(DC) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(DD) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(DE) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(DF)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

We know(DG) that we have come to know him(DH) if we keep his commands.(DI) Whoever says, “I know him,”(DJ) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(DK) But if anyone obeys his word,(DL) love for God[l] is truly made complete in them.(DM) This is how we know(DN) we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(DO)

Dear friends,(DP) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.(DQ) This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command;(DR) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing(DS) and the true light(DT) is already shining.(DU)

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[m](DV) is still in the darkness.(DW) 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[n] lives in the light,(DX) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.(DY) 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister(DZ) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.(EA) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.(EB)

Reasons for Writing

12 I am writing to you, dear children,(EC)
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.(ED)
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(EE)
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome(EF) the evil one.(EG)

14 I write to you, dear children,(EH)
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(EI)
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,(EJ)
and the word of God(EK) lives in you,(EL)
and you have overcome the evil one.(EM)

On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(EN) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[o] is not in them.(EO) 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(EP) the lust of the eyes,(EQ) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away,(ER) but whoever does the will of God(ES) lives forever.

Warnings Against Denying the Son

18 Dear children, this is the last hour;(ET) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,(EU) even now many antichrists have come.(EV) This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us,(EW) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.(EX)

20 But you have an anointing(EY) from the Holy One,(EZ) and all of you know the truth.[p](FA) 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it(FB) and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.(FC) 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.(FD)

24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning(FE) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.(FF) 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.(FG)

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.(FH) 27 As for you, the anointing(FI) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things(FJ) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.(FK)

God’s Children and Sin

28 And now, dear children,(FL) continue in him, so that when he appears(FM) we may be confident(FN) and unashamed before him at his coming.(FO)

29 If you know that he is righteous,(FP) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.(FQ)

See what great love(FR) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!(FS) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.(FT) Dear friends,(FU) now we are children of God,(FV) and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[q](FW) we shall be like him,(FX) for we shall see him as he is.(FY) All who have this hope in him purify themselves,(FZ) just as he is pure.(GA)

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.(GB) But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.(GC) And in him is no sin.(GD) No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.(GE) No one who continues to sin has either seen him(GF) or known him.(GG)

Dear children,(GH) do not let anyone lead you astray.(GI) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.(GJ) The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,(GK) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God(GL) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.(GM) No one who is born of God(GN) will continue to sin,(GO) because God’s seed(GP) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God(GQ) are and who the children of the devil(GR) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love(GS) their brother and sister.(GT)
