by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become (A)partakers of the divine nature, (B)having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith (C)with virtue,[a] and virtue (D)with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control (E)with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness (F)with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection (G)with love. For if these qualities[b] are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or (H)unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he (I)is blind, having forgotten that he was (J)cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers,[c] be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and (K)election, for if you practice these qualities (L)you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you (M)an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 Therefore I intend (N)always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in (O)the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this (P)body,[d] (Q)to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 (R)since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, (S)as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

16 For we did not follow (T)cleverly devised (U)myths when we made known to you (V)the power and (W)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but (X)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, (Y)“This is my beloved Son,[e] with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on (Z)the holy mountain. 19 And (AA)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention (AB)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until (AC)the day (AD)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For (AE)no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God (AF)as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

False Prophets and Teachers

But (AG)false prophets also arose among the people, (AH)just as there will be false teachers among you, who will (AI)secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master (AJ)who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth (AK)will be blasphemed. And (AL)in their greed they will exploit you (AM)with false words. (AN)Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

For if God did not spare (AO)angels when they sinned, but (AP)cast them into hell[f] and committed them to chains[g] of gloomy darkness (AQ)to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but (AR)preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought (AS)a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by (AT)turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, (AU)making them an example of (AV)what is going to happen to the ungodly;[h] and (AW)if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, (AX)he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then (AY)the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,[i] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

  2. 2 Peter 1:8 Greek these things; also verses 9, 10, 12
  3. 2 Peter 1:10 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters
  4. 2 Peter 1:13 Greek tent; also verse 14
  5. 2 Peter 1:17 Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved
  6. 2 Peter 2:4 Greek Tartarus
  7. 2 Peter 2:4 Some manuscripts pits
  8. 2 Peter 2:6 Some manuscripts an example to those who were to be ungodly
  9. 2 Peter 2:9 Or temptations

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(A) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(B) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(C)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(D) and to knowledge, self-control;(E) and to self-control, perseverance;(F) and to perseverance, godliness;(G) and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(H) For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(I) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(J) But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(K) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(L)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(M) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(N) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(O) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(P)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(Q) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(R) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(S) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(T) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(U) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(V) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(W) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(X) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(Y) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](Z) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AA)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AB) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AC) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AD) and the morning star(AE) rises in your hearts.(AF) 20 Above all, you must understand(AG) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(AH) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(AI)

False Teachers and Their Destruction

But there were also false prophets(AJ) among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.(AK) They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord(AL) who bought them(AM)—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct(AN) and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed(AO) these teachers will exploit you(AP) with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,(AQ) but sent them to hell,[c] putting them in chains of darkness[d] to be held for judgment;(AR) if he did not spare the ancient world(AS) when he brought the flood on its ungodly people,(AT) but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;(AU) if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,(AV) and made them an example(AW) of what is going to happen to the ungodly;(AX) and if he rescued Lot,(AY) a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless(AZ) (for that righteous man,(BA) living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials(BB) and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.(BC)
