20 Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.

21 For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not.

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment:

And spared not the original world, but preserved Noe, the eighth person, the preacher of justice, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

And reducing the cities of the Sodomites, and of the Gomorrhites, into ashes, condemned them to be overthrown, making them an example to those that should after act wickedly.

And delivered just Lot, oppressed by the injustice and lewd conversation of the wicked.

For in sight and hearing he was just: dwelling among them, who from day to day vexed the just soul with unjust works.

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly from temptation, but to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be tormented.

20 Above all, you must understand(A) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(B) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(C)

False Teachers and Their Destruction

But there were also false prophets(D) among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.(E) They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord(F) who bought them(G)—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct(H) and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed(I) these teachers will exploit you(J) with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,(K) but sent them to hell,[a] putting them in chains of darkness[b] to be held for judgment;(L) if he did not spare the ancient world(M) when he brought the flood on its ungodly people,(N) but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;(O) if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,(P) and made them an example(Q) of what is going to happen to the ungodly;(R) and if he rescued Lot,(S) a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless(T) (for that righteous man,(U) living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials(V) and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.(W)
