Josiah Reigns over Judah
22 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law
3 In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, the secretary, to the house of the Lord, saying, 4 “Go up to the high priest Hilkiah, and have him count the entire sum of the money that has been brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers of the threshold have collected from the people; 5 let it be given into the hand of the workers who have the oversight of the house of the Lord; let them give it to the workers who are at the house of the Lord, repairing the house, 6 that is, to the carpenters, to the builders, to the masons; and let them use it to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the house. 7 But no accounting shall be asked from them for the money that is delivered into their hand, for they deal honestly.”
8 The high priest Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.” When Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, he read it. 9 Then Shaphan the secretary came to the king, and reported to the king, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workers who have oversight of the house of the Lord.” 10 Shaphan the secretary informed the king, “The priest Hilkiah has given me a book.” Shaphan then read it aloud to the king.
11 When the king heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. 12 Then the king commanded the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary, and the king’s servant Asaiah, saying, 13 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”
14 So the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the prophetess Huldah the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; she resided in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter, where they consulted her. 15 She declared to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me, 16 Thus says the Lord, I will indeed bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants—all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. 17 Because they have abandoned me and have made offerings to other gods, so that they have provoked me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched. 18 But as to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 19 because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard how I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, says the Lord. 20 Therefore, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring on this place.” They took the message back to the king.

8 (B)Allora il sommo sacerdote Chilchia disse a Safan, il segretario: «Ho trovato nella casa del Signore il libro della legge». E Chilchia diede il libro a Safan, che lo lesse. 9 Safan, il segretario, andò a riferire la cosa al re e gli disse: «I tuoi servi hanno versato il denaro che si è trovato nella casa e l’hanno consegnato a quelli che sono preposti ai lavori della casa del Signore». 10 Safan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: «Il sacerdote Chilchia mi ha dato un libro». E Safan lo lesse in presenza del re.
11 Quando il re udì le parole del libro della legge, si stracciò le vesti. 12 Poi il re diede quest’ordine al sacerdote Chilchia, ad Aicam, figlio di Safan, ad Acbor, figlio di Micaia, a Safan il segretario, e ad Asaia, servitore del re: 13 «Andate a consultare il Signore per me, per il popolo e per tutto il regno di Giuda, riguardo alle parole di questo libro che si è trovato; poiché grande è l’ira del Signore che si è accesa contro di noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno ubbidito alle parole di questo libro e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello che in esso ci è prescritto».
14 Il sacerdote Chilchia, Aicam, Acbor, Safan e Asaia andarono dalla profetessa Culda, moglie di Sallum, custode del vestiario, figlio di Ticva, figlio di Carcas. I tuoi occhi non vedranno tutte le sciagure che io farò piombare su questo luogo’”». E quelli riferirono al re la risposta.

2 Und er tat, was recht war in den Augen des Herrn, und wandelte in allen Wegen seines Vaters David, und wich nicht davon ab, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken.
3 Und im achtzehnten Jahr [der Regierung] des Königs Josia sandte der König den Schaphan, den Sohn Azaljas, des Sohnes Meschullams, den Schreiber, in das Haus des Herrn und sprach:
4 Geh hinauf zu Hilkija, dem Hohenpriester! Er soll das Geld bereitstellen, das zum Haus des Herrn gebracht worden ist, das die Hüter der Schwelle vom Volk gesammelt haben,
5 damit man es den Werkmeistern gebe, die am Haus des Herrn die Arbeit beaufsichtigen; diese sollen es den Arbeitern am Haus des Herrn geben, damit sie die Schäden am Haus ausbessern;
6 nämlich den Handwerkern und Bauleuten und den Maurern, um Holz und behauene Steine für die Ausbesserung des Hauses zu kaufen;
7 doch soll man nicht abrechnen mit ihnen wegen des Geldes, das ihnen in die Hand gegeben wird, denn sie handeln treu!

8 Und Hilkija[b], der Hohepriester, sprach zu Schaphan, dem Schreiber: Ich habe das Buch des Gesetzes im Haus des Herrn gefunden! Und Hilkija übergab Schaphan das Buch, und er las es.
9 Und Schaphan, der Schreiber, kam zum König und brachte dem König Bericht und sprach: Deine Knechte haben das Geld ausgeschüttet, das im Haus vorhanden war, und haben es den Werkmeistern gegeben, die am Haus des Herrn die Arbeit beaufsichtigen.
10 Dann berichtete Schaphan, der Schreiber, dem König und sprach: Der Priester Hilkija hat mir ein Buch gegeben! Und Schaphan las es vor dem König.
11 Und es geschah, als der König die Worte des Buches des Gesetzes hörte, da zerriss er seine Kleider.
12 Und der König gebot dem Priester Hilkija und Achikam, dem Sohn Schaphans, und Achbor, dem Sohn Michajas, und Schaphan, dem Schreiber, und Asaja, dem Knecht des Königs, und sprach:
13 Geht hin und befragt den Herrn für mich und das Volk und für ganz Juda wegen der Worte dieses Buches, das gefunden worden ist! Denn groß ist der Zorn des Herrn, der gegen uns entbrannt ist, weil unsere Väter nicht auf die Worte dieses Buches gehört haben, dass sie alles getan hätten, was uns darin vorgeschrieben ist!
14 Da gingen der Priester Hilkija und Achikam, Achbor, Schaphan und Asaja zu der Prophetin Hulda, der Frau Schallums, des Sohnes Tikwas, des Sohnes Harchas, des Hüters der Kleider. Sie wohnte aber in Jerusalem, im zweiten Stadtteil. Und sie redeten mit ihr.
Die Botschaft des Herrn an Josia
15 Sie aber sprach zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Sagt dem Mann, der euch zu mir gesandt hat:
16 So spricht der Herr: »Siehe, ich will Unheil bringen über diesen Ort und über seine Einwohner, nämlich alle Worte des Buches, das der König von Juda gelesen hat,
17 weil sie mich verlassen und anderen Göttern geräuchert haben, um mich herauszufordern mit allen Werken ihrer Hände; deshalb wird mein Zorn gegen diesen Ort entbrennen und nicht ausgelöscht werden!«
18 Zu dem König von Juda aber, der euch gesandt hat, um den Herrn zu befragen, sollt ihr so reden: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: »Was die Worte betrifft, die du gehört hast —
19 weil dein Herz weich geworden ist und du dich vor dem Herrn gedemütigt hast, als du hörtest, was ich gegen diesen Ort und seine Einwohner geredet habe, dass sie zum Entsetzen und zum Fluch werden sollen; und weil du deine Kleider zerrissen und vor mir geweint hast, so habe auch ich darauf gehört, spricht der Herr.
20 Darum, siehe, ich will dich zu deinen Vätern versammeln, dass du in Frieden in dein Grab gebracht wirst, und deine Augen all das Unheil nicht sehen müssen, das ich über diesen Ort bringen will!« Und sie brachten dem König diese Antwort.

22 Jósiás nyolc éves volt, amikor királyságra lépett, és harmincegy évig uralkodott Jeruzsálemben. Anyját Jejdídának hívták, aki Adájá leánya volt, Bockatból. 2 Jósiás azt tette, amit az Örökkévaló helyesnek tart, és minden tekintetben azon az úton járt, amelyen őse, Dávid király — s arról nem tért le sem jobbra, sem balra.
Jósiás elrendeli a Templom kijavítását(B)
3 Uralkodásának tizennyolcadik évében elküldte Sáfánt (aki Acaljáhú fia, Mesullám unokája volt), a titkárát az Örökkévaló Templomába: 4 „Menj Hilkijjá főpaphoz, és mondd meg neki, hogy számolja meg az összegyűlt pénzadományokat, amelyeket a nép hozott be az Örökkévaló Templomába, és amit az ajtóőrök gyűjtöttek össze. 5-6 Adják ezt a pénzt az Örökkévaló háza javítását vezető felügyelőknek, akik ebből fizessék a javításokat végző mesterembereket: az ácsokat és a kőműveseket. 8 Egy napon Hilkijjá, a főpap szólt Sáfánnak, a király titkárának: „Megtaláltam a Törvény Könyvét[a] az Örökkévaló házában!” Átadta neki a könyvtekercset, Sáfán pedig elolvasta.
9 Majd pedig jelentette a királynak: „Szolgáid kihozták az összegyűlt pénzadományokat az Örökkévaló házából, és a munkások felügyelőinek adták.” 10 Azután hozzátette: „Hilkijjá főpap ezt a könyvtekercset adta nekem” — majd felolvasott belőle a királynak.
11 Amikor Jósiás király meghallotta a Törvény igéit, megszaggatta ruháit.[b] 12 Azután ezt parancsolta Hilkijjá főpapnak és Ahikámnak, Sáfán fiának meg Akbórnak, Mikájá fiának meg Sáfánnak, a titkárának és Aszájának, a király szolgájának: 13 „Menjetek, és kérjetek tanácsot az Örökkévalótól számomra, a nép számára és egész Júda számára! Kérdezzétek meg, mit jelentenek ránk nézve ezek az igék, amelyek a megtalált könyvtekercsben vannak! Ezt tegyétek, mert súlyos az Örökkévaló haragja, amely föltámadt ellenünk! 14 Akkor Hilkijjá főpap, Ahikám, Akbór, Sáfán és Aszája — akiket a király elküldött — felkeresték Huldát, a prófétaasszonyt, aki Sallum felesége volt. (Sallum Tikvá fia, ez pedig Harhasz fia volt. Harhasz a király ruháinak a gondviselője volt.) Hulda Jeruzsálem új részében lakott. Hilkijjá és a többiek elmondták Huldának, mi történt.

18 De mondjátok meg Jósiásnak, Júda királyának, aki azért küldött benneteket, hogy megkérdezzétek az Örökkévalót! Ezt mondja az Örökkévaló, Izráel Istene azokról az igékről, amelyeket hallottál: 19 A szíved megindult, és megaláztad magad az Örökkévaló előtt, amikor meghallottad igéit, amelyeket e hely és e hely lakosai ellen mondott, hogy milyen pusztulás és átok következik rájuk. Sa mère s’appelait Yedida, elle était fille d’Adaya de Botsqath. 2 Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste et suivit en tout l’exemple de son ancêtre David sans jamais s’en écarter ni d’un côté ni de l’autre.
La découverte du livre de la Loi
3 La dix-huitième année de son règne[b], Josias envoya son secrétaire Shaphân[c], fils d’Atsalia et petit-fils de Meshoullam, au temple de l’Eternel. Il lui dit : 4 Va trouver le grand-prêtre Hilqiya[d] et demande-lui de compter tout l’argent qui a été apporté dans le temple de l’Eternel et que les portiers ont recueilli. 5 Que l’on remette cet argent aux entrepreneurs qui ont la responsabilité des travaux dans le temple de l’Eternel. Ceux-ci paieront les ouvriers qui effectuent les réparations dans le Temple : 6 les charpentiers, les ouvriers du bâtiment, les maçons. Ils achèteront aussi le bois et les pierres de taille pour consolider l’édifice. 7 On ne leur demandera pas de compte pour l’argent qui leur est confié, car ce sont des gens honnêtes.
8 A cette occasion, le grand-prêtre Hilqiya annonça à Shaphân, le secrétaire : J’ai trouvé le livre de la Loi dans le temple de l’Eternel[e].
Et Hilqiya remit le livre à Shaphân. Celui-ci le lut, 9 puis il se rendit auprès du roi pour lui faire un rapport : Tes serviteurs, dit-il, ont versé l’argent qui se trouvait dans le Temple aux entrepreneurs responsables des travaux dans le Temple. 10 Puis il ajouta : Le prêtre Hilqiya m’a remis un livre.
Et Shaphân se mit à en faire la lecture devant le roi.
L’intervention de la prophétesse Houlda
11 Lorsque Josias entendit le contenu du livre de la Loi, il déchira ses vêtements. 12 Puis il convoqua le prêtre Hilqiya, Ahiqam, fils de Shaphân, Akbor, fils de Michée, Shaphân, le secrétaire et Asaya, l’un des ministres.
13 – Allez consulter l’Eternel pour moi, leur dit-il, ainsi que pour le peuple et pour tout Juda, au sujet des enseignements de ce livre que l’on vient de retrouver. Car la colère de l’Eternel est bien grande. Elle s’est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos ancêtres n’ont pas obéi aux paroles de ce livre et n’ont pas appliqué tout ce qui y est écrit.
14 Alors le prêtre Hilqiya, Ahiqam, Akbor, Shaphân et Asaya se rendirent chez la prophétesse Houlda, femme de Shalloum, fils de Tiqva, petit-fils de Harhas, responsable du vestiaire du Temple. Elle habitait à Jérusalem dans le nouveau quartier. Ils lui exposèrent la situation. 15 Alors Houlda leur dit : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : « Annoncez à l’homme qui vous a envoyés à moi : 16 L’Eternel dit : Je vais faire venir un malheur sur cette contrée et sur ses habitants : tout ce qui est prévu dans le livre que vient de lire le roi de Juda. 17 En effet, parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné et qu’ils ont fait brûler des parfums à d’autres dieux, et parce qu’ils m’ont ainsi irrité par toute leur conduite, ma colère s’est enflammée contre ce lieu et elle n’est pas près de s’apaiser. 18 Mais vous direz au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l’Eternel : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Tu as entendu les paroles contenues dans ce livre. 19 Ton cœur s’est laissé toucher, tu t’es humilié devant moi en entendant ce que j’ai décrété contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants, à savoir la dévastation et la malédiction. Tu as déchiré tes vêtements et tu as pleuré devant moi. De mon côté, moi aussi, j’ai entendu ta prière – l’Eternel le déclare ! 20 C’est pourquoi je te ferai rejoindre tes ancêtres décédés et tu seras déposé paisiblement dans l’un de tes tombeaux, sans avoir vu tout le malheur que je vais amener sur cette contrée. »
Les envoyés rapportèrent cette réponse au roi.
