When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where (A)the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

(B)“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who will (C)shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, (D)they offered him gifts, (E)gold and (F)frankincense and (G)myrrh. 12 And (H)being warned (I)in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

for out of you will come a ruler
    who will shepherd my people Israel.’[a](B)

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(C) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(D) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(E) in a dream(F) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
