10 Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He attacked him in front of the people,[a] assassinated(B) him and succeeded him as king. 11 The other events of Zechariah’s reign are written in the book of the annals(C) of the kings of Israel. 12 So the word of the Lord spoken to Jehu was fulfilled:(D) “Your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”[b]

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(C)
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(D)
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(E) the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(F) I violated(G) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(H) of the men and so I gave in to them.
