A Call to Generous Giving
8 Now I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters,[a] what God in his kindness has done through the churches in Macedonia. 2 They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity.
3 For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. 4 They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem.[b] 5 They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.
6 So we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first place, to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of giving. 7 Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us[c]—I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.
8 I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches.
9 You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.
10 Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it. 11 Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. 12 Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. 13 Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality. 14 Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal. 15 As the Scriptures say,
“Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over,
and those who gathered only a little had enough.”[d]

8 Ahora quiero que sepan, amados hermanos, lo que Dios, en su bondad, ha hecho por medio de las iglesias de Macedonia. 2 Estas iglesias están siendo probadas con muchas aflicciones y además son muy pobres; pero a la vez rebosan de abundante alegría, la cual se desbordó en gran generosidad.
3 Pues puedo dar fe de que dieron no solo lo que podían, sino aún mucho más. Y lo hicieron por voluntad propia. 4 Nos suplicaron una y otra vez tener el privilegio de participar en la ofrenda para los creyentes de Jerusalén.[a] 5 Incluso hicieron más de lo que esperábamos, porque su primer paso fue entregarse ellos mismos al Señor y a nosotros, tal como Dios quería.
6 Así que le hemos pedido a Tito—quien los alentó a que comenzaran a dar—que regrese a ustedes y los anime a completar este ministerio de ofrendar. 7 Dado que ustedes sobresalen en tantas maneras—en su fe, sus oradores talentosos, su conocimiento, su entusiasmo y el amor que reciben de nosotros[b]—quiero que también sobresalgan en este acto bondadoso de ofrendar.
8 No estoy ordenándoles que lo hagan, pero pongo a prueba qué tan genuino es su amor al compararlo con el anhelo de las otras iglesias.
9 Ustedes conocen la gracia generosa de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Aunque era rico, por amor a ustedes se hizo pobre para que mediante su pobreza pudiera hacerlos ricos.
10 Este es mi consejo: sería bueno que completaran lo que comenzaron hace un año. El año pasado, ustedes fueron los primeros en querer dar y fueron los primeros en comenzar a hacerlo. 11 Ahora deberían terminar lo que comenzaron. Que el anhelo que mostraron al principio corresponda ahora con lo que den. Den en proporción a lo que tienen. 12 Todo lo que den es bien recibido si lo dan con entusiasmo. Y den según lo que tienen, no según lo que no tienen. 13 Claro, con eso no quiero decir que lo que ustedes den deba hacerles fácil la vida a otros y difícil a ustedes. Solo quiero decir que debería haber cierta igualdad. 14 Ahora mismo ustedes tienen en abundancia y pueden ayudar a los necesitados. Más adelante, ellos tendrán en abundancia y podrán compartir con ustedes cuando pasen necesidad. De esta manera, habrá igualdad. 15 Como dicen las Escrituras:
«A los que recogieron mucho, nada les sobraba,
y a los que recogieron solo un poco, nada les faltaba»[c].
