Present Weakness and Resurrection Life

Therefore, since through God’s mercy(A) we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.(B) Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;(C) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.(D) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience(E) in the sight of God. And even if our gospel(F) is veiled,(G) it is veiled to those who are perishing.(H) The god(I) of this age(J) has blinded(K) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,(L) who is the image of God.(M) For what we preach is not ourselves,(N) but Jesus Christ as Lord,(O) and ourselves as your servants(P) for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[a](Q) made his light shine in our hearts(R) to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.(S)

But we have this treasure in jars of clay(T) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God(U) and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side,(V) but not crushed; perplexed,(W) but not in despair; persecuted,(X) but not abandoned;(Y) struck down, but not destroyed.(Z) 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,(AA) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.(AB) 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,(AC) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(AD)

13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[b](AE) Since we have that same spirit of[c] faith,(AF) we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead(AG) will also raise us with Jesus(AH) and present us with you to himself.(AI) 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(AJ) to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(AK) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(AL) we are being renewed(AM) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(AN) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(AO) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Awaiting the New Body

For we know that if the earthly(AP) tent(AQ) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan,(AR) longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(AS) because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan(AT) and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(AU) so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AV)

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.(AW) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(AX) So we make it our goal to please him,(AY) whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us(AZ) for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,(BA) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.(BB) 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again,(BC) but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,(BD) so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”(BE) as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.(BF) 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves(BG) but for him who died for them(BH) and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly(BI) point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,(BJ) the new creation(BK) has come:[d] The old has gone, the new is here!(BL) 18 All this is from God,(BM) who reconciled us to himself through Christ(BN) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.(BO) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,(BP) as though God were making his appeal through us.(BQ) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.(BR) 21 God made him who had no sin(BS) to be sin[e] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(BT)

As God’s co-workers(BU) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(BV) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[f](BW)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(BX) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(BY) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(BZ) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(CA) and in sincere love;(CB) in truthful speech(CC) and in the power of God;(CD) with weapons of righteousness(CE) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(CF) bad report(CG) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(CH) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(CI) and yet we live on;(CJ) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(CK) poor, yet making many rich;(CL) having nothing,(CM) and yet possessing everything.(CN)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(CO) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(CP)—open wide your hearts(CQ) also.

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(CR) with unbelievers.(CS) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(CT) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[g]?(CU) Or what does a believer(CV) have in common with an unbeliever?(CW) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(CX) For we are the temple(CY) of the living God.(CZ) As God has said:

“I will live with them
    and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[h](DA)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(DB)
    and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
    and I will receive you.”[i](DC)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,(DD)
says the Lord Almighty.”[j](DE)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(DF) dear friends,(DG) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(DH) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(DI) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(DJ) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(DK) I am greatly encouraged;(DL) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(DM)

For when we came into Macedonia,(DN) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(DO)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(DP) But God, who comforts the downcast,(DQ) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(DR) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(DS) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(DT) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(DU) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(DV) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(DW) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(DX) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(DY) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(DZ) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(EA) receiving him with fear and trembling.(EB) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(EC)

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(ED) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(EE) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(EF) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(EG) in this service(EH) to the Lord’s people.(EI) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(EJ) Titus,(EK) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(EL) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(EM)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(EN) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[k]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(EO) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(EP) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(EQ) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(ER) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(ES)

10 And here is my judgment(ET) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(EU) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(EV) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(EW) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(EX) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[l](EY)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(EZ) who put into the heart(FA) of Titus(FB) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(FC) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(FD) who is praised by all the churches(FE) for his service to the gospel.(FF) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(FG) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(FH) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(FI)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(FJ) he is my partner(FK) and co-worker(FL) among you; as for our brothers,(FM) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(FN) so that the churches can see it.

There is no need(FO) for me to write to you about this service(FP) to the Lord’s people.(FQ) For I know your eagerness to help,(FR) and I have been boasting(FS) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(FT) you in Achaia(FU) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. But I am sending the brothers(FV) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(FW) For if any Macedonians(FX) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(FY) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(FZ) not as one grudgingly given.(GA)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(GB) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(GC) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(GD) for God loves a cheerful giver.(GE) And God is able(GF) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(GG) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(GH) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[m](GI)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(GJ) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(GK) 11 You will be enriched(GL) in every way so that you can be generous(GM) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(GN)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(GO) of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(GP) 13 Because of the service(GQ) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(GR) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(GS) of the gospel of Christ,(GT) and for your generosity(GU) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(GV) for his indescribable gift!(GW)

The Light of the Gospel

Therefore, having (A)this ministry (B)by the mercy of God,[a] we do not lose heart. But we have renounced (C)disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice[b] cunning or (D)to tamper with God's word, but (E)by the open statement of the truth (F)we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even (G)if our gospel is veiled, (H)it is veiled to (I)those who are perishing. In their case (J)the god of this world (K)has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing (L)the light of (M)the gospel of the glory of Christ, (N)who is the image of God. For what (O)we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with (P)ourselves as your servants[c] for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, (Q)“Let light shine out of darkness,” (R)has shone in our hearts to give (S)the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Treasure in Jars of Clay

But we have this treasure in (T)jars of clay, (U)to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are (V)afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but (W)not forsaken; (X)struck down, but not destroyed; 10 (Y)always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, (Z)so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So (AA)death is at work in us, but life in you.

13 Since we have (AB)the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, (AC)“I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that (AD)he who raised the Lord Jesus (AE)will raise us also with Jesus and (AF)bring us with you into his presence. 15 For (AG)it is all for your sake, so that as (AH)grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, (AI)to the glory of God.

16 So we do not lose heart. (AJ)Though our outer self[d] is wasting away, (AK)our inner self (AL)is being renewed day by day. 17 For (AM)this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 (AN)as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Our Heavenly Dwelling

For we know that if (AO)the tent that is (AP)our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, (AQ)a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent (AR)we groan, longing to (AS)put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on[e] we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal (AT)may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, (AU)who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that (AV)while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for (AW)we walk by faith, not (AX)by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we (AY)would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to (AZ)please him. 10 For (BA)we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, (BB)so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Therefore, knowing (BC)the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But (BD)what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 (BE)We are not commending ourselves to you again but (BF)giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we (BG)are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ (BH)controls us, because we have concluded this: that (BI)one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, (BJ)that those who live might no longer live for themselves but (BK)for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, (BL)we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is (BM)in Christ, he is (BN)a new creation.[f] (BO)The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, (BP)who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us (BQ)the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling[g] the world to himself, (BR)not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us (BS)the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, (BT)we are ambassadors for Christ, (BU)God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 (BV)For our sake he made him to be sin (BW)who knew no sin, so that in him we might become (BX)the righteousness of God.

(BY)Working together with him, then, (BZ)we appeal to you (CA)not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

(CB)“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, (CC)now is the (CD)favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We (CE)put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but (CF)as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: (CG)by great endurance, (CH)in afflictions, (CI)hardships, calamities, (CJ)beatings, imprisonments, (CK)riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; (CL)by purity, (CM)knowledge, patience, kindness, (CN)the Holy Spirit, (CO)genuine love; by (CP)truthful speech, and (CQ)the power of God; with (CR)the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, (CS)through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and (CT)yet well known; (CU)as dying, and behold, we live; (CV)as punished, and yet not killed; 10 (CW)as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; (CX)as poor, yet making many rich; (CY)as having nothing, (CZ)yet possessing everything.

11 We have spoken freely to you,[h] Corinthians; (DA)our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but (DB)you are restricted in your own affections. 13 (DC)In return (I speak (DD)as to children) widen your hearts also.

The Temple of the Living God

14 (DE)Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For (DF)what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or (DG)what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 (DH)What accord has Christ with Belial?[i] Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For (DI)we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

(DJ)“I will make my dwelling among them and (DK)walk among them,
and (DL)I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore (DM)go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
    then I will welcome you,
18 (DN)and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”

Since we have these promises, beloved, (DO)let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body[j] and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

Paul's Joy

(DP)Make room in your hearts[k] for us. (DQ)We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that (DR)you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I am acting with (DS)great boldness toward you; (DT)I have great pride in you; (DU)I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.

For even (DV)when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—(DW)fighting without and fear within. But (DX)God, who comforts the downcast, (DY)comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. For (DZ)even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though (EA)I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but (EB)because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

10 For (EC)godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas (ED)worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, (EE)what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one (EF)who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore (EG)we are comforted.

And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit (EH)has been refreshed by you all. 14 For (EI)whatever boasts I made to him about you, I was not put to shame. But just as everything we said to you (EJ)was true, so also our boasting before Titus has proved true. 15 And his affection for you is even greater, as he remembers (EK)the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice, because I have complete (EL)confidence in you.

Encouragement to Give Generously

We want you to know, brothers,[l] about the grace of God that has been (EM)given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and (EN)their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave (EO)according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly (EP)for the favor[m] of taking part in (EQ)the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they (ER)gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, (ES)we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you (ET)this act of grace. But as (EU)you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you[n](EV)see that you excel in this act of grace also.

(EW)I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that (EX)though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter (EY)I give my judgment: (EZ)this benefits you, who (FA)a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable (FB)according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply (FC)their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, (FD)“Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

Commendation of Titus

16 But (FE)thanks be to God, (FF)who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. 17 For (FG)he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going[o] to you of his own accord. 18 With him we are sending[p] (FH)the brother who is famous among (FI)all the churches for his preaching of the gospel. 19 And not only that, but he has been (FJ)appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of (FK)grace that is being ministered by us, (FL)for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will. 20 We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, 21 for (FM)we aim at what is honorable (FN)not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man. 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is (FO)my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers[q] of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24 So give proof before the churches of your love and of (FP)our boasting about you to these men.

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

Now (FQ)it is superfluous for me to write to you about (FR)the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, (FS)of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready (FT)since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But (FU)I am sending[r] the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, (FV)as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians (FW)come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the (FX)gift[s] you have promised, so that it may be ready (FY)as a willing gift, (FZ)not as an exaction.[t]

The Cheerful Giver

The point is this: (GA)whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[u] will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, (GB)not reluctantly or under compulsion, for (GC)God loves a cheerful giver. And (GD)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency[v] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

(GE)“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies (GF)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (GG)increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 (GH)You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which (GI)through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying (GJ)the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, (GK)they[w] will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your (GL)confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 (GM)Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Treasure in Fragile Clay Jars

Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this new way,[a] we never give up. We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.

If the Good News we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden only from people who are perishing. Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure.[b] This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

11 Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. 12 So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you.

13 But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist had when he said, “I believed in God, so I spoke.”[c] 14 We know that God, who raised the Lord Jesus,[d] will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself together with you. 15 All of this is for your benefit. And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory.

16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are[e] being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

New Bodies

For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.[f] While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.

So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

We Are God’s Ambassadors

11 Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too. 12 Are we commending ourselves to you again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us,[g] so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart. 13 If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit. 14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us.[h] Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.[i] 15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! 17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,[j] so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

As God’s partners,[k] we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it. For God says,

“At just the right time, I heard you.
On the day of salvation, I helped you.”[l]

Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find fault with our ministry. In everything we do, we show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind. We have been beaten, been put in prison, faced angry mobs, worked to exhaustion, endured sleepless nights, and gone without food. We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us,[m] and by our sincere love. We faithfully preach the truth. God’s power is working in us. We use the weapons of righteousness in the right hand for attack and the left hand for defense. We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors. We are ignored, even though we are well known. We live close to death, but we are still alive. We have been beaten, but we have not been killed. 10 Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.

11 Oh, dear Corinthian friends! We have spoken honestly with you, and our hearts are open to you. 12 There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us. 13 I am asking you to respond as if you were my own children. Open your hearts to us!

The Temple of the Living God

14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil[n]? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said:

“I will live in them
    and walk among them.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.[o]
17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers,
and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.
Don’t touch their filthy things,
    and I will welcome you.[p]
18 And I will be your Father,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
    says the Lord Almighty.[q]

Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.

Please open your hearts to us. We have not done wrong to anyone, nor led anyone astray, nor taken advantage of anyone. I’m not saying this to condemn you. I said before that you are in our hearts, and we live or die together with you. I have the highest confidence in you, and I take great pride in you. You have greatly encouraged me and made me happy despite all our troubles.

Paul’s Joy at the Church’s Repentance

When we arrived in Macedonia, there was no rest for us. We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus. His presence was a joy, but so was the news he brought of the encouragement he received from you. When he told us how much you long to see me, and how sorry you are for what happened, and how loyal you are to me, I was filled with joy!

I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while. Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way. 10 For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

11 Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right. 12 My purpose, then, was not to write about who did the wrong or who was wronged. I wrote to you so that in the sight of God you could see for yourselves how loyal you are to us. 13 We have been greatly encouraged by this.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was about the way all of you welcomed him and set his mind[r] at ease. 14 I had told him how proud I was of you—and you didn’t disappoint me. I have always told you the truth, and now my boasting to Titus has also proved true! 15 Now he cares for you more than ever when he remembers the way all of you obeyed him and welcomed him with such fear and deep respect. 16 I am very happy now because I have complete confidence in you.

A Call to Generous Giving

Now I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters,[s] what God in his kindness has done through the churches in Macedonia. They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity.

For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem.[t] They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.

So we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first place, to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of giving. Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us[u]—I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.

I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches.

You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.

10 Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it. 11 Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. 12 Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. 13 Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality. 14 Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal. 15 As the Scriptures say,

“Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over,
and those who gathered only a little had enough.”[v]

Titus and His Companions

16 But thank God! He has given Titus the same enthusiasm for you that I have. 17 Titus welcomed our request that he visit you again. In fact, he himself was very eager to go and see you. 18 We are also sending another brother with Titus. All the churches praise him as a preacher of the Good News. 19 He was appointed by the churches to accompany us as we take the offering to Jerusalem[w]—a service that glorifies the Lord and shows our eagerness to help.

20 We are traveling together to guard against any criticism for the way we are handling this generous gift. 21 We are careful to be honorable before the Lord, but we also want everyone else to see that we are honorable.

22 We are also sending with them another of our brothers who has proven himself many times and has shown on many occasions how eager he is. He is now even more enthusiastic because of his great confidence in you. 23 If anyone asks about Titus, say that he is my partner who works with me to help you. And the brothers with him have been sent by the churches,[x] and they bring honor to Christ. 24 So show them your love, and prove to all the churches that our boasting about you is justified.

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

I really don’t need to write to you about this ministry of giving for the believers in Jerusalem.[y] For I know how eager you are to help, and I have been boasting to the churches in Macedonia that you in Greece[z] were ready to send an offering a year ago. In fact, it was your enthusiasm that stirred up many of the Macedonian believers to begin giving.

But I am sending these brothers to be sure you really are ready, as I have been telling them, and that your money is all collected. I don’t want to be wrong in my boasting about you. We would be embarrassed—not to mention your own embarrassment—if some Macedonian believers came with me and found that you weren’t ready after all I had told them! So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly.

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”[aa] And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say,

“They share freely and give generously to the poor.
Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”[ab]

10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity[ac] in you.

11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. 12 So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem[ad] will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.

13 As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. 14 And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. 15 Thank God for this gift[ae] too wonderful for words!
