The Spirit, Not the Letter

And we have such trust through Christ toward God. (A)Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but (B)our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as (C)ministers of (D)the new covenant, not (E)of the letter but of the [a]Spirit; for (F)the letter kills, (G)but the Spirit gives life.

Glory of the New Covenant

But if (H)the ministry of death, (I)written and engraved on stones, was glorious, (J)so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will (K)the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry (L)of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, (M)we use great boldness of speech— 13 unlike Moses, (N)who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at (O)the end of what was passing away. 14 But (P)their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless (Q)when one turns to the Lord, (R)the veil is taken away. 17 Now (S)the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (T)liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding (U)as in a mirror (V)the glory of the Lord, (W)are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [b]by the Spirit of the Lord.

Such confidence(A) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(B) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(C) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(D)—not of the letter(E) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(F)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

Now if the ministry that brought death,(G) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(H) transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation(I) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(J) 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope,(K) we are very bold.(L) 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(M) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull,(N) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(O) is read.(P) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(Q) the veil is taken away.(R) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,(S) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(T) 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a](U) the Lord’s glory,(V) are being transformed into his image(W) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Christian Liberty

(A)Stand[a] fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a (B)yoke of bondage. Indeed I, Paul, say to you that (C)if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised (D)that he is [b]a debtor to keep the whole law. (E)You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; (F)you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly (G)wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For (H)in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but (I)faith working through love.

Love Fulfills the Law

You (J)ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. (K)A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.

11 And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, (L)why do I still suffer persecution? Then (M)the offense of the cross has ceased. 12 (N)I could wish that those (O)who trouble you would even [c]cut themselves off!

13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only (P)do not use liberty as an (Q)opportunity for the flesh, but (R)through love serve one another. 14 For (S)all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: (T)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!

Freedom in Christ

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.(A) Stand firm,(B) then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.(C)

Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised,(D) Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.(E) You who are trying to be justified by the law(F) have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.(G) For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.(H) For in Christ Jesus(I) neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value.(J) The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.(K)

You were running a good race.(L) Who cut in on you(M) to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.(N) “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”(O) 10 I am confident(P) in the Lord that you will take no other view.(Q) The one who is throwing you into confusion,(R) whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty. 11 Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted?(S) In that case the offense(T) of the cross has been abolished. 12 As for those agitators,(U) I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

Life by the Spirit

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.(V) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a];(W) rather, serve one another(X) humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](Y) 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
