14 But (A)thanks be to God, who in Christ always (B)leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads (C)the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among (D)those who are being saved and among (E)those who are perishing, 16 (F)to one a fragrance from death to death, (G)to the other a fragrance from life to life. (H)Who is sufficient[a] for these things? 17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Ministers of the New Covenant

(I)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, (J)as some do, (K)letters of recommendation to you, or from you? (L)You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our[b] hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of (M)the living God, not on (N)tablets of stone but on (O)tablets of (P)human hearts.[c]

(Q)Such is the confidence that we have through Christ towards God. (R)Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but (S)our sufficiency is from God, who has made us competent[d] to be (T)ministers of (U)a new covenant, not of (V)the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but (W)the Spirit gives life.

14 But thanks be to God,(A) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma(B) of the knowledge(C) of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma(D) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.(E) 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death;(F) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?(G) 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.(H) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,(I) as those sent from God.(J)

Are we beginning to commend ourselves(K) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(L) to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(M) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(N) not on tablets of stone(O) but on tablets of human hearts.(P)

Such confidence(Q) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(R) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(S) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(T)—not of the letter(U) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(V)
