14 Here (A)for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for (B)I seek not what is yours but you. For (C)children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but (D)parents for their children. 15 (E)I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If (F)I love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 But granting that (G)I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by deceit. 17 Did I take advantage of you (H)through any of those whom I sent to you? 18 (I)I urged Titus to go, and sent (J)the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not act in the same spirit? Did we not take the same steps?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? It is (K)in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and (L)all for your upbuilding, beloved. 20 For I fear that perhaps (M)when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. 21 I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those (N)who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, (O)sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

Final Warnings

13 (P)This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established (Q)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. (R)I warned (S)those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that (T)if I come again I will not spare them— since you seek proof that Christ (U)is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but (V)is powerful among you. For (W)he was crucified in weakness, but (X)lives by the power of God. For (Y)we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you (Z)we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. (AA)Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that (AB)Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when (AC)we are weak and you are strong. Your (AD)restoration is what we pray for. 10 For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come (AE)I may not have to be (AF)severe in my use of (AG)the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers,[a] rejoice. (AH)Aim for restoration, comfort one another,[b] (AI)agree with one another, (AJ)live in peace; and the God of love and (AK)peace will be with you. 12 (AL)Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 (AM)All the saints greet you.

14 (AN)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and (AO)the love of God and (AP)the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(A) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(B) but parents for their children.(C) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(D) If I love you more,(E) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(F) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(G) Titus(H) to go to you and I sent our brother(I) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(J) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(K) is for your strengthening.(L) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(M) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(N) I fear that there may be discord,(O) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(P) slander,(Q) gossip,(R) arrogance(S) and disorder.(T) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(U) over many who have sinned earlier(V) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(W) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(X) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[a](Y) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(Z) On my return I will not spare(AA) those who sinned earlier(AB) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(AC) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(AD) yet he lives by God’s power.(AE) Likewise, we are weak(AF) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(AG) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(AH) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(AI) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(AJ)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(AK) but you are strong;(AL) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(AM) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(AN) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(AO)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(AP) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(AQ) And the God of love(AR) and peace(AS) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(AT) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(AU)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(AV) and the love of God,(AW) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(AX) be with you all.
