24 Five times I received from the Jews (A)thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was (B)beaten with rods, once I was (C)stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent adrift at sea. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my (D)countrymen, dangers from the (E)Gentiles, dangers in the (F)city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among (G)false brothers; 27 I have been in (H)labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in (I)hunger and thirst, often (J)without food, in cold and [a](K)exposure.

- 2 Corinthians 11:24 OT law limited judicial scourging (whipping) to forty lashes. The Jews established a tradition of thirty-nine lashes to minimize the risk of making a mistake in the count and giving the guilty party more than forty.

24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(A) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(B) once I was pelted with stones,(C) three times I was shipwrecked,(D) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(E) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(F) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(G) 27 I have labored and toiled(H) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(I) I have been cold and naked.
