13 Ik kom nu voor de derde keer naar jullie toe, en dus is het waar wat ik zeg. Want het is net als in de rechtspraak: als twee of drie mensen hetzelfde vertellen over iets wat er gebeurd is, dan is het waar. 2 Toen ik voor de tweede keer bij jullie was, heb ik de mensen gewaarschuwd die nog steeds ongehoorzaam waren aan God. Ook de anderen heb ik gewaarschuwd. En nu ik nog niet bij jullie ben, waarschuw ik hen opnieuw. Als ik terugkom, zal ik hen bestraffen als dat nodig is. 3 Jullie zoeken nu eenmaal het bewijs dat Christus door mij spreekt. Ik zal jullie laten zien dat Hij niet zwak maar sterk is in de manier waarop Hij met jullie omgaat. 4 Eerst werd Hij als een zwak mens gekruisigd. Maar nu leeft Hij door de kracht van God. Zo zijn ook wij als mens zwak in Hem. Maar voor jullie leven we met Hem uit de kracht van God.
5 Ga bij jezelf eens na of jullie wel vanuit je geloof leven. Weten jullie wel zeker dat Christus in jullie is? Als Hij niet werkelijk in jullie is, worden jullie afgekeurd. 6 Maar ik hoop dat jullie zullen zien dat wij niet afgekeurd zijn. 7 Ja, we bidden God dat jullie Hem nooit ongehoorzaam zullen zijn. Niet omdat dan zal blijken dat wíj eerlijk en betrouwbaar zijn. Maar omdat júllie dan zullen doorgaan met het goede te doen, zelfs als het er op zou lijken dat wijzelf afgekeurd zijn. 8 We kunnen niet tégen de waarheid strijden, maar alleen vóór de waarheid. 9 Want wij zijn blij als jullie sterk zijn, ook als wij zelf zwak zijn. Ik wil zó graag dat jullie helemaal vol van Christus zullen zijn.
10 Daarom schrijf ik jullie deze dingen voordat ik kom. Dan hoef ik niet streng tegen jullie te zijn als ik straks bij jullie ben. Want de Heer heeft mij gezag gegeven om jullie geloof op te bouwen. (Ik wil het beslist niet afbreken!)
11 Tenslotte, broeders en zusters: wees blij! Zorg dat alles waarover ik geschreven heb in orde komt. Laat je bemoedigen in jullie geloof. Wees één met elkaar en maak geen ruzie. Dan zal de God van liefde en vrede bij jullie zijn. 12 Groet elkaar met een heilige kus. Jullie moeten de groeten hebben van alle gelovigen.
13 Ik bid dat de Heer Jezus Christus in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. Ook dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de liefde van God en dat de Heilige Geest jullie in alles zal helpen.

13 Dit wordt mijn derde bezoek aan u. Als twee of drie mensen ergens van kunnen getuigen, staat iets vast. 2 De vorige keer dat ik bij u was, gaf ik al een waarschuwing aan hen die hadden gezondigd. En nu waarschuw ik hen nog eens en ook alle anderen, dat ik deze keer niemand zal sparen. 3 Ik zal u duidelijk bewijzen dat Christus door mij spreekt. Hij is niet zwak, maar zal onder u zijn kracht tonen. 4 Als een zwak mens stierf Hij aan het kruis, maar door de kracht van God leeft Hij nu. Wij zijn net zo zwak als Hij, maar wij leven met Hem en zullen in ons optreden tegen u sterk zijn, door de kracht van God. 5 Onderzoek uzelf om na te gaan of u wel gehoorzame volgelingen van Christus bent. Weet u of Jezus Christus in u woont? Mocht dat niet zo zijn, dan staat u er helemaal buiten.
6 Ik hoop dat het u duidelijk is dat wij niet buitengesloten worden. 7 Wij bidden God dat u niets kwaads zult doen, niet om ons de schande te besparen, maar omdat ik graag wil dat u een goed leven leidt, ook al worden wijzelf minderwaardig geacht. 8 Ik kan niet tegen, maar alleen voor de waarheid strijden. 9 Het maakt ons blij als u sterk bent, ook al zijn wij dan zwak. Het is mijn vurige gebed dat het met u helemaal in orde zal komen.
10 Dit schrijf ik allemaal in de hoop dat ik, als ik bij u kom, niet hard zal hoeven optreden. Want het gezag dat de Here mij gegeven heeft, is om op te bouwen en niet om af te breken. 11 Ik wil mijn brief met deze woorden besluiten. Wees blij. Laat alles in orde komen. Houd mijn woorden in gedachten. Leef in vrede en harmonie met elkaar en de God van liefde en vrede zal bij u zijn.
12 Groet elkaar met de heilige kus. Alle gelovigen hier groeten u. 13 Mijn wens voor u is dat de genade van onze Here Jezus Christus, de liefde van God en de innige band die de Heilige Geest geeft, met u zullen zijn.

13 This is the third time I am coming to you. At the mouth of two witnesses or three shall every word be established. 2 I have said [a]beforehand, and I do say [b]beforehand, [c]as when I was present the second time, so now, being absent, to them that have sinned heretofore, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare; 3 seeing that ye seek a proof of Christ that speaketh in me; who to you-ward is not weak, but is powerful in you: 4 for he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth through the power of God. For we also are weak [d]in him, but we shall live with him through the power of God toward you. 5 Try your own selves, whether ye are in the faith; prove your own selves. Or know ye not as to your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed ye be reprobate. 6 But I hope that ye shall know that we are not reprobate. 7 Now we pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we may appear approved, but that ye may do that which is honorable, [e]though we be as reprobate. 8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. 9 For we rejoice, when we are weak, and ye are strong: this we also pray for, even your perfecting. 10 For this cause I write these things while absent, that I may not when present deal sharply, according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not for casting down.
11 Finally, brethren, [f]farewell. Be perfected; be comforted; be of the same mind; live in peace: and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 12 Salute one another with a holy kiss.
13 All the saints salute you.
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare:
3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.
10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.
11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
12 Greet one another with an holy kiss.
