So they established a decree to circulate a [a]proclamation throughout Israel (A)from Beersheba to Dan, that they are to come to celebrate the Passover to the Lord God of Israel in Jerusalem. For they had not celebrated it in great numbers as was written. (B)The [b]couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with the letters from the hand of the king and his princes, even according to the command of the king, saying, “Sons of Israel, return to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, that He may return to those of you who escaped and are left from (C)the [c]hand of the kings of Assyria. (D)Do not be like your fathers and your brothers, who were untrue to the Lord God of their fathers, so that (E)He made them an object of horror, just as you see. Now do not (F)stiffen your neck like your fathers, but [d]yield to the Lord and enter His sanctuary which He has consecrated forever, and serve the Lord your God, (G)that His burning anger may turn away from you. For (H)if you return to the Lord, your brothers and your sons will find compassion in the presence of those who led them captive, and will return to this land. (I)For the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate, and will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”

10 So the [e]couriers passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, and as far as Zebulun, but (J)they laughed at them with scorn and mocked them. 11 Nevertheless, (K)some men of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. 12 The (L)hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the Lord.

Passover Reinstituted

13 Now many people were gathered at Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread (M)in the second month, a very large assembly. 14 They got up and removed the altars which were in Jerusalem; they also (N)removed all the incense altars and (O)threw them into the brook Kidron. 15 Then (P)they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth of the second month. And (Q)the priests and Levites were ashamed of themselves, and consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the house of the Lord. 16 (R)They stood at their stations following their custom, according to the Law of Moses the man of God; the priests sprinkled the blood which they received from the hand of the Levites. 17 For there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves; therefore, (S)the Levites were in charge of the slaughter of the Passover lambs for everyone who was unclean, in order to consecrate them to the Lord. 18 For a multitude of the people, (T)many from Ephraim and Manasseh, and Issachar and Zebulun, had not purified themselves, (U)yet they ate the Passover (V)contrary to what was written. For Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the good Lord pardon 19 (W)everyone who prepares his heart to seek God, the Lord God of his fathers, though not according to the purification rules of the sanctuary.” 20 So the Lord heard Hezekiah and (X)healed the people.

They decided to send a proclamation throughout Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,(A) calling the people to come to Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel. It had not been celebrated in large numbers according to what was written.

At the king’s command, couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and from his officials, which read:

“People of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that he may return to you who are left, who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria. Do not be like your parents(B) and your fellow Israelites, who were unfaithful(C) to the Lord, the God of their ancestors, so that he made them an object of horror,(D) as you see. Do not be stiff-necked,(E) as your ancestors were; submit to the Lord. Come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the Lord your God, so that his fierce anger(F) will turn away from you. If you return(G) to the Lord, then your fellow Israelites and your children will be shown compassion(H) by their captors and will return to this land, for the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate.(I) He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.”

10 The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but people scorned and ridiculed(J) them. 11 Nevertheless, some from Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled(K) themselves and went to Jerusalem.(L) 12 Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity(M) of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the Lord.

13 A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread(N) in the second month. 14 They removed the altars(O) in Jerusalem and cleared away the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley.(P)

15 They slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and the Levites were ashamed and consecrated(Q) themselves and brought burnt offerings to the temple of the Lord. 16 Then they took up their regular positions(R) as prescribed in the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests splashed against the altar the blood handed to them by the Levites. 17 Since many in the crowd had not consecrated themselves, the Levites had to kill(S) the Passover lambs for all those who were not ceremonially clean and could not consecrate their lambs[a] to the Lord. 18 Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves,(T) yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone 19 who sets their heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of their ancestors—even if they are not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.” 20 And the Lord heard(U) Hezekiah and healed(V) the people.(W)
