19 The Lord sent prophets to warn them to return to him, but the people refused to listen. 20 (A)Then the spirit of God took control of Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood where the people could see him and called out, “The Lord God asks why you have disobeyed his commands and are bringing disaster on yourselves! You abandoned him, so he has abandoned you!” 21 King Joash joined in a conspiracy against Zechariah, and on the king's orders the people stoned Zechariah in the Temple courtyard.

19 Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen.(A)
20 Then the Spirit(B) of God came on Zechariah(C) son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper.(D) Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken(E) you.’”
21 But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned(F) him to death(G) in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.(H)
