Shishak of Egypt Comes Against Judah

12 (A)Now it happened that when the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and strong, (B)he and all Israel with him forsook the law of Yahweh. (C)Now it happened in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to Yahweh, that (D)Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen. And the people who came with him from Egypt were without number: (E)the Lubim, the Sukkiim and the Ethiopians. And he captured (F)the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. Now (G)Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘(H)You have forsaken Me, so I also have forsaken you [a]to Shishak.’” So the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “(I)Yahweh is righteous.”

When Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, “(J)They have humbled themselves so I will not bring them to ruin, but I will grant them some measure of escape, and (K)My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. But they will become his slaves so (L)that they may know the difference between My slavery and the slavery of the kingdoms of the countries.”

Shishak Takes from Yahweh’s House

(M)So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took the treasures of the house of Yahweh and the treasures of the king’s house. He took everything; (N)he even took the shields of gold which Solomon had made. 10 Then King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place and committed them to the hand of the commanders of the [b]guard who kept the door of the king’s house. 11 Now it happened that as often as the king entered the house of Yahweh, the [c]guards would come and carry them and then bring them back into the [d]guards’ room. 12 And (O)when he humbled himself, the anger of Yahweh turned away from him, so as not to ruin him completely; and also conditions (P)were good in Judah.

13 (Q)So King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Now Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put His name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. 14 And he did evil (R)because he did not set his heart to seek Yahweh.

15 (S)Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the [e]records of (T)Shemaiah the prophet and of (U)Iddo the seer, according to genealogical record? Now there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days. 16 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David; and (V)Abijah his son became king in his place.

Shishak of Egypt Invades Jerusalem

12 And when the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and when he was strengthened, he forsook the law of Yahweh, and all Israel with him. And it happened that in the fifth year of King Rehoboam (for they had acted unfaithfully against Yahweh), Shishak the king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem with one thousand two hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. And there was no number to the people who came up with him from Egypt—Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites. And he took the fortified cities that belonged to Judah, and he came up to Jerusalem.

Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem from before Shishak. And he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh: ‘You yourselves have abandoned me, and I myself have surely abandoned you into the hand of Shishak.’” Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “Yahweh is righteous.” And when Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy. I will give to them some way of escape, that my anger not be poured out against Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. However, they shall be his servants, that they might know my service and the service of the kingdoms of other countries.”

Then Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and he took the treasures out of the house of Yahweh and the treasures out of the king’s house. He took everything. He also took the small shields of gold that Solomon had made. 10 And King Rehoboam made small shields of bronze in their place and committed them into the hand of the commanders of the guards who were keeping the entrance of the house of the king. 11 And whenever the king went into the house of Yahweh, the guards came and carried them, and then they returned them to the alcove of the guards. 12 And when he humbled himself, the anger of Yahweh was turned away from him, so that he did not destroy the city completely. Moreover, matters were well in Judah.

The Death of Rehoboam

13 So King Rehoboam was strengthened in Jerusalem, and he reigned there. Now, Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city where Yahweh had chosen to put his name out of all the tribes of Israel. And the name of his mother was Naamah the Ammonite. 14 And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek Yahweh.

15 Now the words of Rehoboam from the first to the last, are they not written in the chronicles[a] of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer as a record? And there were battles between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their[b] days. 16 And Rehoboam slept with his ancestors,[c] and he was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his place.
