⁸ Therefore, the anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah and Jerusalem; he has made them an object of dread and horror^(A) and scorn,^(B) as you can see with your own eyes.

³ Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return^(A) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’^(B) says the Lord Almighty. ⁴ Do not be like your ancestors,^(C) to whom the earlier prophets^(D) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways^(E) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,^(F) declares the Lord.^(G)

¹³ “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled^(A) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws^(B)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.^(C) So I said I would pour out my wrath^(D) on them and destroy^(E) them in the wilderness.^{(F) 14} But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned^(G) in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.^{(H) 15} Also with uplifted hand I swore^(I) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands^(J)— ¹⁶ because they rejected my laws^(K) and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts^(L) were devoted to their idols.^{(M) 17} Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy^(N) them or put an end to them in the wilderness. ¹⁸ I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents^(O) or keep their laws or defile yourselves^(P) with their idols.
