“The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits[a] from the town wall. 31 Jeroboam built shrines(F) on high places and appointed priests(G) from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. 32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth(H) month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel,(I) sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. 33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel.(J) So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

25 From half the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach(H) and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands—two towns.

26 All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.(I)

27 The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given:

41 The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands.(AI) 42 Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.

21 “To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for a possession in return for the service that they perform, the service in the tent of meeting.(A) 22 From now on the Israelites shall no longer approach the tent of meeting, or else they will incur guilt and die.(B) 23 But the Levites shall perform the service of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear responsibility for their own offenses; it shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations. But among the Israelites they shall have no allotment,(C) 24 because I have given to the Levites as their portion the tithe of the Israelites, which they set apart as an offering to the Lord. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no allotment among the Israelites.”

25 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “You shall say to the Levites: When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you from them for your portion, you shall set apart an offering from it to the Lord, a tithe of the tithe.(D) 27 It shall be reckoned to you as your gift, the same as the grain of the threshing floor and the fullness of the winepress. 28 Thus you also shall set apart an offering to the Lord from all the tithes that you receive from the Israelites, and from them you shall give the Lord’s offering to the priest Aaron.(E)

21 “I give to the Levites all the tithes(A) in Israel as their inheritance(B) in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.(C) 22 From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.(D) 23 It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance(E) for the generations to come.(F) They will receive no inheritance(G) among the Israelites.(H) 24 Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord.(I) That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you(J) as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.(K) 27 Your offering will be reckoned(L) to you as grain from the threshing floor(M) or juice from the winepress.(N) 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes(O) you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest.

30 “All tithes from the land, whether the seed from the ground or the fruit from the tree, are the Lord’s; they are holy to the Lord.(A) 31 If persons wish to redeem any of their tithes, they must add one-fifth to them.(B) 32 All tithes of herd and flock, every tenth one that passes under the shepherd’s staff, shall be holy to the Lord. 33 Let no one inquire whether it is good or bad or make substitution for it; if one makes substitution for it, then both it and the substitute shall be holy and cannot be redeemed.”(C)

34 These are the commandments that the Lord gave to Moses for the Israelites on Mount Sinai.(D)
