Adonia roept zichzelf tot koning uit
1 Op zijn oude dag was koning David aan zijn bed gekluisterd. Maar onder hoeveel dekens hij ook sliep, altijd had hij het koud. 2 ‘Daar valt wel iets aan te doen,’ zeiden zijn dienaren tegen hem. ‘We zullen een jong meisje voor u zoeken die u kan verplegen en verzorgen. Zij zal in uw armen liggen en u warm houden.’ 3,4 Zij zochten het hele land Israël af, op zoek naar het mooiste meisje. Ten slotte werd Abisag gevonden, een meisje uit Sunam, dat bijzonder mooi was. Zij brachten haar bij de koning en zij verzorgde hem en lag in zijn armen om hem te verwarmen. De koning had echter geen gemeenschap met haar.
5 Ongeveer in diezelfde tijd besloot Adonia, de zoon van David en Haggith, zichzelf tot koning uit te roepen. Hij huurde rijtuigen en wagenmenners en zorgde voor vijftig mannen die als koninklijke voetknechten de straten voor hem vrijmaakten. 6 Zijn vader, koning David, had hem zijn hele leven nooit eens goed onder handen genomen of de waarheid gezegd. Hij was bovendien een erg knappe jongeman en een jongere broer van Absalom. 7 Hij nam generaal Joab en de priester Abjathar in vertrouwen en zij beloofden hem te helpen koning te worden. 8 Maar tot degenen die trouw bleven aan koning David en zich niet inlieten met Adonia, behoorden de priester Zadok, Benaja, de profeet Nathan, Simi, Reï en Davids legerbevelhebbers. 9 Adonia ging naar de bron Rogel, waar hij op de steen Zohéleth schapen, ossen en vetgemeste jonge geiten offerde. Daarna nodigde hij al zijn broers—de andere zonen van koning David—en alle koninklijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders van Juda uit voor de feestelijke offermaaltijd. 10 Maar de profeet Nathan, Benaja, de trouwe legerbevelhebbers en zijn broer Salomo nodigde hij niet uit.
11 Toen ging de profeet Nathan naar Bathséba, de moeder van Salomo, en vroeg haar: ‘Beseft u wel dat Haggiths zoon Adonia zich tot koning uitroept en dat koning David daar helemaal niets van weet? 12 Ik raad u aan uw eigen leven en dat van uw zoon Salomo te redden. 13 Ga onmiddellijk naar koning David en vraag hem: “U hebt mij toch beloofd dat Salomo u zou opvolgen? Waarom is Adonia dan nu koning?” 14 En terwijl u nog met hem spreekt, zal ik dan binnenkomen en alles bevestigen wat u hebt gezegd.’ 15 Zo ging Bathséba naar de slaapkamer van de koning. Hij was al een erg oude man en Abisag zorgde voor hem. 16 Bathséba boog diep. ‘Wat wilt u?’ vroeg hij haar. 17 Zij antwoordde: ‘U hebt mij bij de Here, uw God, gezworen dat Salomo u zou opvolgen en uw plaats zou innemen op de troon. 18 Maar nu is Adonia koning geworden zonder dat u het weet. 19 Hij is zijn kroning aan het vieren met het offeren van ossen, vette geiten en schapen. Bovendien heeft hij daarvoor al uw zonen, de priester Abjathar en generaal Joab uitgenodigd. Maar Salomo is niet uitgenodigd. 20 Nu wacht heel Israël op uw beslissing wie door u is aangewezen als uw opvolger. 21 Als u nu niets doet, zullen mijn zoon Salomo en ik na uw overlijden worden beschuldigd van hoogverraad.’
22,23 Terwijl zij nog sprak, vertelden Davids dienaren hem dat de profeet Nathan hem wilde spreken. Nathan kwam binnen, boog diep voor de koning en vroeg: 24 ‘Koning, hebt u Adonia aangewezen als troonopvolger? Hebt u hem uitgekozen om na u koning te worden? 25 Vandaag viert hij zijn kroning met het offeren van ossen, vette geiten en vele schapen, waarbij hij uw zonen heeft uitgenodigd. Ook generaal Joab en andere hoofdofficieren en de priester Abjathar heeft hij uitgenodigd. Zij drinken en vieren feest en roepen: “Lang leve koning Adonia”. 26 Maar de priester Zadok, Benaja, Salomo en ik zijn niet uitgenodigd. 27 Is dit alles op uw aanwijzing gebeurd? Of hebt u soms al bekendgemaakt wie van uw zonen de volgende koning moet worden?’
Salomo tot koning gezalfd
28 ‘Roep Bathséba,’ zei David. Zij kwam weer binnen en ging voor de koning staan. 29 Toen zwoer de koning: ‘Zo waar de Here leeft, die mij van elk gevaar heeft gered, 30 verklaar ik dat uw zoon Salomo de volgende koning zal zijn, precies zoals ik u al eerder onder ede heb gezworen bij de Here, de God van Israël.’ 31 Bathséba boog opnieuw diep voor hem en riep uit: ‘Dank u wel! Moge koning David voor eeuwig leven!’ 32 ‘Roep de priester Zadok, de profeet Nathan en Benaja hier,’ beval de koning. Toen zij bij hem binnenkwamen, zei hij tegen hen: 33 ‘Breng Salomo onder begeleiding van mijn lijfwacht naar Gihon. Salomo moet op mijn eigen muildier rijden. 34 De priester Zadok en de profeet Nathan moeten hem daar tot koning van Israël zalven. Blaas daarna op de trompetten en roep: “Lang leve koning Salomo!” 35 Wanneer u hem daarna weer hier terugbrengt, moet hij op mijn troon plaatsnemen als de nieuwe koning, want ik heb hem benoemd tot koning over Israël en Juda.’ 36 ‘Amen. Prijs de Here, de God van mijn heer, de Koning,’ antwoordde Benaja en hij voegde daaraan toe: 37 ‘Moge de Here met Salomo zijn, zoals Hij met u was en moge God Salomoʼs bewind nog roemrijker maken dan het uwe!’
38 Daarop brachten de priester Zadok, de profeet Nathan, Benaja en Davids lijfwacht Salomo naar Gihon. Deze reed op Davids eigen muildier. 39 Aangekomen in Gihon, pakte Zadok een hoorn met heilige olie uit het heiligdom en goot die over Salomo uit, daarna werd op de trompetten geblazen en riepen alle omstanders: ‘Lang leve koning Salomo!’ 40 Vervolgens gingen zij allemaal met hem terug naar Jeruzalem. Onderweg werd de zalving van Salomo uitbundig met muziek gevierd.
41 Adonia en zijn gasten hoorden het opgewonden geroep en het trompetgeschal, terwijl zij bijna met hun maaltijd gereed waren. ‘Wat gebeurt daar allemaal?’ wilde Joab weten. ‘Waarom heerst er zoʼn opwinding in de stad?’
42 Terwijl hij dat zei, kwam Jonathan, de zoon van priester Abjathar, binnenrennen. ‘Kom binnen,’ zei Adonia tegen hem, ‘want u bent een goed man, u zult vast goed nieuws voor ons hebben.’ 43 ‘Integendeel, koning David heeft Salomo tot koning uitgeroepen,’ riep Jonathan. 44,45 ‘De koning zond hem naar Gihon met de priester Zadok, de profeet Nathan en Benaja, geëscorteerd door de lijfwacht van de koning. Hij reed op het muildier van de koning. En Zadok en Nathan hebben hem daar tot koning gezalfd! Zij zijn net teruggekeerd en nu viert de hele stad feest. Daar komt al dat lawaai vandaan. 46,47 Salomo zit intussen al op de troon en alle mensen feliciteren koning David met de woorden: “Moge God Salomo nog meer zegenen dan Hij u zegende en moge Salomoʼs bewind nog roemrijker worden dan het uwe!” De koning ligt nog op zijn rustbed en buigt zich daar in aanbidding neer. 48 Hij heeft gezegd: “Gezegend zij de Here, de God van Israël, die een van mijn zonen heeft uitgekozen om op mijn troon te zitten, terwijl ik nog leef en er getuige van kan zijn.” ’
49,50 Adonia en zijn gasten sprongen op van tafel en ieder haastte zich naar huis. Adonia was bang dat Salomo wraak zou nemen. Daarom rende hij het heiligdom in en greep de horens van het heilige altaar om bescherming te zoeken. 51 Aan koning Salomo werd gemeld: ‘Adonia is bang voor u. Hij heeft een van de hoeken van het altaar vastgegrepen en uitgeroepen: “Laat koning Salomo mij eerst zweren dat hij mij niet zal terechtstellen!” ’ 52 Salomo zei: ‘Als hij zich voortaan goed gedraagt, zal hem niets overkomen. Maar als hij dat niet doet, moet hij sterven.’ 53 Koning Salomo liet hem bij zich roepen en zij haalden hem bij het altaar vandaan. Toen hij voor de koning verscheen, boog Adonia diep voor hem neer. Salomo zei alleen maar: ‘Ga naar huis.’
Davids opdracht aan Salomo
2 Toen koning David zijn einde voelde naderen, gaf hij zijn zoon Salomo de volgende opdracht: 2 ‘Ik ga nu de weg waarlangs ieder mens op aarde eens moet gaan. Gedraag je als een man en zorg ervoor een krachtig en waardig opvolger te zijn. 3 Gehoorzaam de wetten van God en volg al zijn wegen. Leef de geboden, voorschriften en aanwijzingen die in de wet van Mozes staan na, zodat het je goed zal gaan bij alles wat je doet en waar je ook gaat. 4 Als je dat doet, zal de Here de belofte die Hij mij gaf, nakomen. Als mijn kinderen en hun nakomelingen goed opletten wat zij doen en met hart en ziel trouw zijn aan God, zal er altijd een van hen koning van Israël zijn, er zal nooit een eind komen aan ons koningshuis.
5 Luister nu naar mijn aanwijzingen. Je weet dat Joab mijn twee opperbevelhebbers heeft vermoord, Abner en Amasa. Hij beweerde dat dat in tijd van oorlog gebeurde, maar dat is niet waar, het was vrede toen het gebeurde. Er kleeft dus bloed aan zijn handen. 6 Je bent een wijs man en weet wat je te doen staat. Laat hem niet in vrede sterven.
7 Maar wees vriendelijk voor de zonen van de Gileadiet Barzillai. Maak hen tot je vaste gasten, want zij zorgden voor mij toen ik op de vlucht was voor je broer Absalom. 8 En herinner je je Simi, de zoon van Gera, de Benjaminiet uit Bahurim? Hij vervloekte mij met een vreselijke vloek toen ik op weg was naar Machanaïm. Maar toen hij naar de Jordaan kwam om mij te ontmoeten, heb ik hem beloofd dat ik hem niet zou doden. 9 Laat hem dus in geen geval ongestraft. Je bent verstandig genoeg om te weten wat je moet doen en om ervoor te zorgen dat de grijsgeworden Simi een bloedige dood sterft.’
10 Daarna stierf David en hij werd begraven in Jeruzalem.
11 Gedurende veertig jaar had hij over Israël geregeerd, zeven jaar vanuit Hebron en drieëndertig jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. 12 Salomo werd de nieuwe koning in opvolging van zijn vader David. Zijn koningschap verliep erg goed.
13 Op een dag stapte Adonia bij Salomoʼs moeder binnen. ‘Komt u met vreedzame bedoelingen?’ vroeg zij hem. ‘Ja,’ antwoordde hij. 14 ‘Ik heb u iets te vertellen.’ ‘Vertel het maar,’ zei zij. 15 ‘Alles ging voor de wind,’ begon hij, ‘en het koningschap was al van mij, iedereen in Israël verwachtte dat ik de nieuwe koning zou worden. Maar de kansen keerden en mijn broer kreeg alles, want zo wilde de Here het. 16 Maar nu wil ik u een kleine gunst vragen, stelt u mij alstublieft niet teleur.’ ‘Wat is die gunst?’ vroeg zij. 17 Hij antwoordde: ‘Praat u alstublieft namens mij met koning Salomo, want ik weet dat hij u niets zal weigeren. Vraag hem of hij mij Abisag, de Sunamitische, als vrouw wil geven.’ 18 ‘Goed,’ zei Bathséba, ‘ik zal het hem vragen.’
19 Toen zij koning Salomo die gunst ging vragen, stond de koning van zijn troon op en boog diep voor haar. Hij beval dat naast zijn troon een troon voor zijn moeder moest worden neergezet en zo kwam zij aan zijn rechterhand te zitten. 20 ‘Ik heb u slechts een klein verzoek te doen,’ begon zij, ‘en ik hoop dat u mij niet zult teleurstellen.’ ‘Wat is het, moeder?’ vroeg hij. ‘U weet dat ik u niets kan weigeren.’ 21 ‘Laat uw broer Adonia dan trouwen met Abisag,’ zei zij. 22 ‘Hoe kunt u dat nu vragen?’ riep hij, ‘als ik hem Abisag zou geven, zou dat betekenen dat ik hem het koninkrijk ook geef! Want hij is mijn oudere broer! U weet toch dat hij, de priester Abjathar en generaal Joab de macht wilden overnemen!’ 23,24 Daarop zwoer koning Salomo bij de Here: ‘Moge God mij laten sterven als Adonia deze dag niet sterft, hij heeft zijn eigen doodvonnis getekend! Dat zweer ik bij de levende God, die mij de troon van mijn vader David en dit koninkrijk dat Hij mij beloofde, heeft gegeven.’ 25 Koning Salomo stuurde Benaja naar hem toe om hem ter dood te brengen en deze doodde Adonia met een zwaard.
26 Daarna zei de koning tegen de priester Abjathar: ‘Ga terug naar uw huis in Anatoth. U verdient ook te worden gedood, maar ik zal dat nu nog niet doen. Want u droeg de ark van de Here God tijdens mijn vaders regering en u maakte alle moeilijkheden samen met hem door.’ 27 Zo dwong Salomo Abjathar zijn positie als priester van de Here op te geven, waardoor hij de voorspelling van de Here bij Silo, over de nakomelingen van Eli, in vervulling deed gaan.
28 Toen Joab hoorde dat Adonia was gedood—hij had zelf meegedaan aan de opstand van Adonia, maar niet aan die van Absalom—rende hij voor bescherming naar het heiligdom en greep de horens van het altaar. 29 Dat hoorde koning Salomo en hij stuurde Benaja er naartoe om hem te doden. 30 Benaja liep het heiligdom in en zei tegen Joab: ‘De koning beveelt u naar buiten te komen!’ ‘Nee,’ zei hij, ‘ik zal hier sterven.’ Daarop ging Benaja terug naar de koning om verdere instructies te vragen. 31 ‘Doe wat hij zegt,’ luidde het antwoord van de koning. ‘Dood hem bij het altaar en begraaf hem daarna. Dan zal de schuld van zijn meedogenloze moorden zijn weggenomen van mij en mijn vaders familie. 32 Zo zal de Here hem zijn verdiende loon geven voor de moord op twee mannen die beter waren dan hij. Want mijn vader was niet op de hoogte van de dood van opperbevelhebber Abner van het leger van Israël en van opperbevelhebber Amasa van het leger van Juda. 33 Mogen Joab en zijn nakomelingen voor eeuwig schuldig zijn aan deze moorden en moge de Here David en zijn nakomelingen onschuldig verklaren aan hun dood.’ 34 Benaja ging terug naar het heiligdom en doodde Joab, zijn lichaam werd begraven naast zijn huis in de woestijn. 35 De koning benoemde Benaja in Joabs plaats tot opperbevelhebber en Zadok tot priester in de plaats van Abjathar.
36,37 Korte tijd later liet de koning Simi bij zich komen en zei tegen hem: ‘Bouw hier in Jeruzalem een huis en zet geen stap buiten de stad, want dat zou uw dood betekenen. Op het moment dat u de beek de Kidron oversteekt, is uw doodvonnis een feit, dan zal het uw eigen schuld zijn.’ 38 ‘Goed,’ antwoordde Simi, ‘wat u zegt is goed en ik zal daarnaar handelen.’
Zo bleef hij lange tijd in Jeruzalem wonen.
39 Drie jaar later ontsnapten echter twee van Simiʼs slaven naar koning Achis van Gath. Toen Simi hoorde waar zij waren, 40 zadelde hij een ezel en ging zijn knechten achterna naar Gath. Nadat hij zijn slaven had gevonden, nam hij hen mee terug naar Jeruzalem. 41 Toen Salomo hoorde dat Simi Jeruzalem had verlaten om naar Gath te gaan en ook weer was teruggekomen, 42 liet hij hem bij zich komen en zei: ‘Heb ik u niet in de naam van God bevolen in Jeruzalem te blijven op straffe van de dood? U antwoordde toen: “Goed, ik zal doen wat u zegt.” 43 Waarom hebt u zich dan niet aan uw eed gehouden en hebt u mijn bevel niet gehoorzaamd? 44 En hoe zit het met alle wandaden die u bedreef tegen mijn vader, koning David? De Here zal vandaag wraak op u nemen, 45 maar moge ik Gods rijke zegeningen ontvangen en mogen Davids nakomelingen voor altijd op deze troon zitten.’ 46 Op bevel van de koning nam Benaja Simi mee naar buiten en doodde hem. Zo kreeg Salomo zijn koninkrijk steeds beter in de greep.

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
1 When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2 So his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.”
3 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag,(A) a Shunammite,(B) and brought her to the king. 4 The woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no sexual relations with her.
5 Now Adonijah,(C) whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots(D) and horses[a] ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 (His father had never rebuked(E) him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)
7 Adonijah conferred with Joab(F) son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar(G) the priest, and they gave him their support. 8 But Zadok(H) the priest, Benaiah(I) son of Jehoiada, Nathan(J) the prophet, Shimei(K) and Rei and David’s special guard(L) did not join Adonijah.
9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel.(M) He invited all his brothers, the king’s sons,(N) and all the royal officials of Judah, 10 but he did not invite(O) Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon.(P)
11 Then Nathan asked Bathsheba,(Q) Solomon’s mother, “Have you not heard that Adonijah,(R) the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David knows nothing about it? 12 Now then, let me advise(S) you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in to King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear(T) to me your servant: “Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and add my word to what you have said.”
15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag(U) the Shunammite was attending him. 16 Bathsheba bowed down, prostrating herself before the king.
“What is it you want?” the king asked.
17 She said to him, “My lord, you yourself swore(V) to me your servant by the Lord your God: ‘Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.’ 18 But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. 19 He has sacrificed(W) great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king’s sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. 20 My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest(X) with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals.”
22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23 And the king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here.” So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground.
24 Nathan said, “Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? 25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ 26 But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite.(Y) 27 Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
David Makes Solomon King(Z)
28 Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
29 The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble,(AA) 30 I will surely carry out this very day what I swore(AB) to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground, prostrating herself before the king, and said, “May my lord King David live forever!”
32 King David said, “Call in Zadok(AC) the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” When they came before the king, 33 he said to them: “Take your lord’s servants with you and have Solomon my son mount my own mule(AD) and take him down to Gihon.(AE) 34 There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint(AF) him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet(AG) and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. 37 As the Lord was with my lord the king, so may he be with(AH) Solomon to make his throne even greater(AI) than the throne of my lord King David!”
38 So Zadok(AJ) the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites(AK) and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.(AL) 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil(AM) from the sacred tent(AN) and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet(AO) and all the people shouted,(AP) “Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, playing pipes(AQ) and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.
41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, “What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?”(AR)
42 Even as he was speaking, Jonathan(AS) son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.”(AT)
43 “Not at all!” Jonathan answered. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, 45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds(AU) with it. That’s the noise you hear. 46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat(AV) on the royal throne. 47 Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater(AW) than yours!’ And the king bowed in worship on his bed 48 and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor(AX) on my throne today.’”
49 At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. 50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns(AY) of the altar. 51 Then Solomon was told, “Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”
52 Solomon replied, “If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair(AZ) of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.” 53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, “Go to your home.”
David’s Charge to Solomon(BA)
2 When the time drew near for David to die,(BB) he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,”(BC) he said. “So be strong,(BD) act like a man, 3 and observe(BE) what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper(BF) in all you do and wherever you go 4 and that the Lord may keep his promise(BG) to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully(BH) before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’
5 “Now you yourself know what Joab(BI) son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner(BJ) son of Ner and Amasa(BK) son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet. 6 Deal with him according to your wisdom,(BL) but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.
7 “But show kindness(BM) to the sons of Barzillai(BN) of Gilead and let them be among those who eat at your table.(BO) They stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.
8 “And remember, you have with you Shimei(BP) son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim.(BQ) When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore(BR) to him by the Lord: ‘I will not put you to death by the sword.’ 9 But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom;(BS) you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.”
10 Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried(BT) in the City of David.(BU) 11 He had reigned(BV) forty years over Israel—seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. 12 So Solomon sat on the throne(BW) of his father David, and his rule was firmly established.(BX)
Solomon’s Throne Established
13 Now Adonijah,(BY) the son of Haggith, went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. Bathsheba asked him, “Do you come peacefully?”(BZ)
He answered, “Yes, peacefully.” 14 Then he added, “I have something to say to you.”
“You may say it,” she replied.
15 “As you know,” he said, “the kingdom was mine. All Israel looked to me as their king. But things changed, and the kingdom has gone to my brother; for it has come to him from the Lord. 16 Now I have one request to make of you. Do not refuse me.”
“You may make it,” she said.
17 So he continued, “Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag(CA) the Shunammite as my wife.”
18 “Very well,” Bathsheba replied, “I will speak to the king for you.”
19 When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother,(CB) and she sat down at his right hand.(CC)
20 “I have one small request to make of you,” she said. “Do not refuse me.”
The king replied, “Make it, my mother; I will not refuse you.”
21 So she said, “Let Abishag(CD) the Shunammite be given in marriage to your brother Adonijah.”
22 King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request Abishag(CE) the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—after all, he is my older brother(CF)—yes, for him and for Abiathar(CG) the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!”
23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord: “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(CH) if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request! 24 And now, as surely as the Lord lives—he who has established me securely on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised(CI)—Adonijah shall be put to death today!” 25 So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah(CJ) son of Jehoiada, and he struck down Adonijah and he died.(CK)
26 To Abiathar(CL) the priest the king said, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth.(CM) You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death now, because you carried the ark(CN) of the Sovereign Lord before my father David and shared all my father’s hardships.”(CO) 27 So Solomon removed Abiathar from the priesthood of the Lord, fulfilling(CP) the word the Lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli.
28 When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns(CQ) of the altar. 29 King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and was beside the altar.(CR) Then Solomon ordered Benaiah(CS) son of Jehoiada, “Go, strike him down!”
30 So Benaiah entered the tent(CT) of the Lord and said to Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!(CU)’”
But he answered, “No, I will die here.”
Benaiah reported to the king, “This is how Joab answered me.”
31 Then the king commanded Benaiah, “Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so clear me and my whole family of the guilt of the innocent blood(CV) that Joab shed. 32 The Lord will repay(CW) him for the blood he shed,(CX) because without my father David knowing it he attacked two men and killed them with the sword. Both of them—Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa(CY) son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army—were better(CZ) men and more upright than he. 33 May the guilt of their blood rest on the head of Joab and his descendants forever. But on David and his descendants, his house and his throne, may there be the Lord’s peace forever.”
34 So Benaiah(DA) son of Jehoiada went up and struck down Joab(DB) and killed him, and he was buried at his home out in the country. 35 The king put Benaiah(DC) son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s position and replaced Abiathar with Zadok(DD) the priest.
36 Then the king sent for Shimei(DE) and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go anywhere else. 37 The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley,(DF) you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”(DG)
38 Shimei answered the king, “What you say is good. Your servant will do as my lord the king has said.” And Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.
39 But three years later, two of Shimei’s slaves ran off to Achish(DH) son of Maakah, king of Gath, and Shimei was told, “Your slaves are in Gath.” 40 At this, he saddled his donkey and went to Achish at Gath in search of his slaves. So Shimei went away and brought the slaves back from Gath.
41 When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned, 42 the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and warn(DI) you, ‘On the day you leave to go anywhere else, you can be sure you will die’? At that time you said to me, ‘What you say is good. I will obey.’ 43 Why then did you not keep your oath to the Lord and obey the command I gave you?”
44 The king also said to Shimei, “You know in your heart all the wrong(DJ) you did to my father David. Now the Lord will repay you for your wrongdoing. 45 But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain secure(DK) before the Lord forever.”
46 Then the king gave the order to Benaiah(DL) son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei(DM) down and he died.
The kingdom was now established(DN) in Solomon’s hands.
