1 COMO el rey David era viejo, y entrado en días, cubríanle de vestidos, mas no se calentaba.
2 Dijéronle por tanto sus siervos: Busquen á mi señor el rey una moza virgen, para que esté delante del rey, y lo abrigue, y duerma á su lado, y calentará á mi señor el rey.
3 Y buscaron una moza hermosa por todo el término de Israel, y hallaron á Abisag Sunamita, y trajéronla al rey.
4 Y la moza era hermosa, la cual calentaba al rey, y le servía: mas el rey nunca la conoció.
5 Entonces Adonía hijo de Haggith se levantó, diciendo: Yo reinaré. E hízose de carros y gente de á caballo, y cincuenta hombres que corriesen delante de él.
6 Y su padre nunca lo entristeció en todos sus días con decirle: ¿Por qué haces así? Y también éste era de hermoso parecer; y habíalo engendrado después de Absalom.
7 Y tenía tratos con Joab hijo de Sarvia, y con Abiathar sacerdote, los cuales ayudaban á Adonía.
8 Mas Sadoc sacerdote, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y Nathán profeta, y Semei, y Reihi, y todos los grandes de David, no seguían á Adonía.
9 Y matando Adonía ovejas y vacas y animales engordados junto á la peña de Zoheleth, que está cerca de la fuente de Rogel, convidó á todos sus hermanos los hijos del rey, y á todos los varones de Judá, siervos del rey:
10 Mas no convidó á Nathán profeta, ni á Benaía, ni á los grandes, ni á Salomón su hermano.
11 Y habló Nathán á Bath-sheba madre de Salomón, diciendo: ¿No has oído que reina Adonía hijo de Haggith, sin saberlo David nuestro señor?
12 Ven pues ahora, y toma mi consejo, para que guardes tu vida, y la vida de tu hijo Salomón.
13 Ve, y entra al rey David, y dile: Rey señor mío, ¿no has tú jurado á tu sierva, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono? ¿por qué pues reina Adonía?
14 Y estando tú aún hablando con el rey, yo entraré tras ti, y acabaré tus razones.
15 Entonces Bath-sheba entró al rey á la cámara: y el rey era muy viejo; y Abisag Sunamita servía al rey.
16 Y Bath-sheba se inclinó, é hizo reverencia al rey. Y el rey dijo: ¿Qué tienes?
17 Y ella le respondió: Señor mío, tú juraste á tu sierva por Jehová tu Dios, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono;
18 Y he aquí ahora Adonía reina: y tú, mi señor rey, ahora no lo supiste.
19 Ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á Abiathar sacerdote, y á Joab general del ejército; mas á Salomón tu siervo no ha convidado.
20 Entre tanto, rey señor mío, los ojos de todo Israel están sobre ti, para que les declares quién se ha de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él.
21 De otra suerte acontecerá, cuando mi señor el rey durmiere con sus padres, que yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos tenidos por culpables.
22 Y estando aún hablando ella con el rey, he aquí Nathán profeta, que vino.
23 Y dieron aviso al rey, diciendo: He aquí Nathán profeta: el cual como entró al rey, postróse delante del rey inclinando su rostro á tierra.
24 Y dijo Nathán: Rey señor mío, ¿has tú dicho: Adonía reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono?
25 Porque hoy ha descendido, y ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á los capitanes del ejército, y también á Abiathar sacerdote; y he aquí, están comiendo y bebiendo delante de él, y han dicho: Viva el rey Adonía!
26 Mas ni á mí tu siervo, ni á Sadoc sacerdote, ni á Benaía hijo de Joiada, ni á Salomón tu siervo, ha convidado.
27 ¿Es este negocio ordenado por mi señor el rey, sin haber declarado á tu siervo quién se había de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?
28 Entonces el rey David respondió, y dijo: Llamadme á Bath-sheba. Y ella entró á la presencia del rey, y púsose delante del rey.
29 Y el rey juró, diciendo: Vive Jehová, que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia,
30 Que como yo te he jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel, diciendo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono en lugar mío; que así lo haré hoy.
31 Entonces Bath-sheba se inclinó al rey, su rostro á tierra, y haciendo reverencia al rey, dijo: Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre.
32 Y el rey David dijo: Llamadme á Sadoc sacerdote, y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada. Y ellos entraron á la presencia del rey.
33 Y el rey les dijo: Tomad con vosotros los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced subir á Salomón mi hijo en mi mula, y llevadlo á Gihón:
34 Y allí lo ungirán Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta por rey sobre Israel; y tocaréis trompeta, diciendo: Viva el rey Salomón!
35 Después iréis vosotros detrás de él, y vendrá y se sentará en mi trono, y él reinará por mí; porque á él he ordenado para que sea príncipe sobre Israel y sobre Judá.
36 Entonces Benaía hijo de Joiada respondió al rey, y dijo: Amén. Así lo diga Jehová, Dios de mi señor el rey.
37 De la manera que Jehová ha sido con mi señor el rey, así sea con Salomón; y él haga mayor su trono que el trono de mi señor el rey David.
38 Y descendió Sadoc sacerdote, y Nathán profeta, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y los Ceretheos y los Peletheos, é hicieron subir á Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lleváronlo á Gihón.
39 Y tomando Sadoc sacerdote el cuerno del aceite del tabernáculo, ungió á Salomón: y tocaron trompeta, y dijo todo el pueblo: Viva el rey Salomón!
40 Después subió todo el pueblo en pos de él, y cantaba la gente con flautas, y hacían grandes alegrías, que parecía que la tierra se hundía con el clamor de ellos.
41 Y oyólo Adonía, y todos los convidados que con él estaban, cuando ya habían acabado de comer. Y oyendo Joab el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: ¿Por qué se alborota la ciudad con estruendo?
42 Estando aún él hablando, he aquí Jonathán hijo de Abiathar sacerdote vino, al cual dijo Adonía: Entra, porque tú eres hombre de esfuerzo, y traerás buenas nuevas.
43 Y Jonathán respondió, y dijo á Adonía: Ciertamente nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey á Salomón:
44 Y el rey ha enviado con él á Sadoc sacerdote y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada, y también á los Ceretheos y á los Peletheos, los cuales le hicieron subir en la mula del rey;
45 Y Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta lo han ungido en Gihón por rey: y de allá han subido con alegrías, y la ciudad está llena de estruendo. Este es el alboroto que habéis oído.
46 Y también Salomón se ha sentado en el trono del reino.
47 Y aun los siervos del rey han venido á bendecir á nuestro señor el rey David, diciendo: Dios haga bueno el nombre de Salomón más que tu nombre, y haga mayor su trono que el tuyo. Y el rey adoró en la cama.
48 Y también el rey habló así: Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel, que ha dado hoy quien se siente en mi trono, viéndolo mis ojos.
49 Ellos entonces se estremecieron, y levantáronse todos los convidados que estaban con Adonía, y fuése cada uno por su camino.
50 Mas Adonía, temiendo de la presencia de Salomón, levantóse y fuése, y cogió los cornijales del altar.
51 Y fué hecho saber á Salomón, diciendo: He aquí que Adonía tiene miedo del rey Salomón: pues ha cogido los cornijales del altar, diciendo: Júreme hoy el rey Salomón que no matará á cuchillo á su siervo.
52 Y Salomón dijo: Si él fuere virtuoso, ni uno de sus cabellos caerá en tierra: mas si se hallare mal en él, morirá.
53 Y envió el rey Salomón, y trajéronlo del altar; y él vino, é inclinóse al rey Salomón. Y Salomón le dijo: Vete á tu casa.

Adonijah Makes Himself King
1 King David was now very old. He couldn’t keep warm even when blankets were spread over him. 2 So his attendants spoke to him. They said, “You are our king and master. Please let us try to find a young virgin to serve you. She can take care of you. She can lie down beside you to keep you warm.”
3 So David’s attendants looked all over Israel for a beautiful young woman. They found Abishag. She was from the town of Shunem. They brought her to the king. 4 The woman was very beautiful. She took care of the king and served him. But the king didn’t have sex with her.
5 Adonijah was the son of David and his wife Haggith. He came forward and announced, “I’m going to be the next king.” So he got chariots and horses ready. He also got 50 men to run in front of him. 6 His father had never tried to stop him from doing what he wanted to. His father had never asked him, “Why are you acting the way you do?” Adonijah was also very handsome. Now that Absalom was dead, Adonijah was David’s oldest son.
7 Adonijah talked things over with Joab, the son of Zeruiah. He also talked with Abiathar the priest. They agreed to help him. 8 But Zadok the priest and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, didn’t join Adonijah. Nathan the prophet didn’t join him. Shimei and Rei didn’t join him. And neither did David’s special guard.
9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle and fat calves. He sacrificed them at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah. 10 But he didn’t invite Benaiah or Nathan the prophet. He didn’t invite the special guard or his brother Solomon either.
11 Nathan asked Solomon’s mother Bathsheba, “Haven’t you heard? Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has made himself king. And King David doesn’t know anything about it. 12 So let me tell you what to do to save your life. It will also save the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in and see King David. Say to him, ‘You are my king and master. You promised me, “You can be sure that your son Solomon will be king after me. He will sit on my throne.” If that’s really true, why has Adonijah become king?’ 14 While you are still talking to the king, I’ll come in and support what you have said.”
15 So Bathsheba went to see the old king in his room. Abishag, the Shunammite, was taking care of him there. 16 Bathsheba bowed low in front of the king.
“What do you want?” the king asked.
17 She said to him, “My master, you made a promise in the name of the Lord your God. You promised me, ‘Your son Solomon will be king after me. He will sit on my throne.’ 18 But now Adonijah has made himself king. And you don’t even know about it. 19 He has sacrificed large numbers of cattle, fat calves and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons. He has also invited Abiathar the priest and Joab, the commander of the army. But he hasn’t invited your son Solomon. 20 You are my king and master. All the Israelites are watching to see what you will do. They want to find out from you who will sit on the throne after you. 21 If you don’t do something, I and my son Solomon will be treated like people who have committed crimes. That will happen as soon as you join the members of your family who have already died.”
22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23 The king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here.” So Nathan went to the king. He bowed down with his face toward the ground.
24 Nathan said, “You are my king and master. Have you announced that Adonijah will be king after you? Have you said he will sit on your throne? 25 Today he has gone down outside the city. He has sacrificed large numbers of cattle, fat calves and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons. He has also invited the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Even now they are eating and drinking with him. They are saying, ‘May King Adonijah live a long time!’ 26 But he didn’t invite me. He didn’t invite Zadok the priest or Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada. He didn’t invite your son Solomon either. 27 King David, have you allowed all of that to happen? Did you do it without letting us know about it? Why didn’t you tell us who is going to sit on your throne after you?”
David Makes Solomon King
28 King David said, “Tell Bathsheba to come in.” So she came and stood in front of the king.
29 Then the king made a promise. He said, “The Lord has saved me from all my troubles. You can be sure that he lives. 30 And you can be just as sure I will do what I promised. This is the day I will do what I promised in the name of the Lord. He is the God of Israel. I promised you that your son Solomon would be king after me. He will sit on my throne in my place.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed down in front of the king. Her face was toward the ground. She said, “King David, you are my master. May you live forever!”
32 King David said, “Tell Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet to come in. Also tell Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, to come.” So they came to the king. 33 He said to them, “Take my officials with you. Have my son Solomon get on my own mule. Take him down to the Gihon spring. 34 Have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him as king over Israel there. Blow a trumpet. Shout, ‘May King Solomon live a long time!’ 35 Then come back up to the city with him. Have him sit on my throne. He will rule in my place. I’ve appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, answered the king. “Amen!” he said. “May the Lord your God make it come true. 37 You are my king and master. The Lord has been with you. May he also be with Solomon. King David, may the Lord make Solomon’s kingdom even greater than yours!”
38 So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet left the palace. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, went with them. So did the Kerethites and Pelethites. They had Solomon get on King David’s mule. And they brought him down to the Gihon spring. 39 Zadok the priest had taken an animal horn from the sacred tent. The horn was filled with olive oil. He anointed Solomon with the oil. A trumpet was blown. All the people shouted, “May King Solomon live a long time!” 40 Then they went up toward the city. Solomon was leading the way. The people were playing flutes. They were filled with great joy. The ground shook because of all the noise.
41 Adonijah and all his guests heard it. They were just finishing their meal. Joab heard the sound of the trumpet. So he asked, “What does all this noise in the city mean?”
42 While Joab was still speaking, Jonathan arrived. Jonathan was the son of Abiathar the priest. Adonijah said, “Come in. I have respect for you. You must be bringing good news.”
43 “No! I’m not!” Jonathan answered. “Our master King David has made Solomon king. 44 David sent Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet along with Solomon. He also sent Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, with him. He sent the Kerethites and Pelethites with him too. They put him on the king’s mule. 45 They took him down to the Gihon spring. There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed him as king. Now they’ve gone back up to the city. They were cheering all the way. The city is filled with the sound of it. That’s the noise you hear. 46 And that’s not all. Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. 47 The royal officials came to give their blessing to our master King David. They said, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours! May he make Solomon’s kingdom greater than yours!’ While King David was sitting on his bed, he bowed in worship. 48 He said, ‘I praise the Lord. He is the God of Israel. He has let me live to see my son sitting on my throne today as the next king.’ ”
49 When all Adonijah’s guests heard that, they were terrified. So they got up and scattered. 50 Adonijah was afraid of what Solomon might do to him. So he went and grabbed the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. Those horns stuck out from its upper corners. 51 Then Solomon was told, “King Solomon, Adonijah is afraid of you. He’s holding onto the horns of the altar. He says, ‘I want King Solomon to make a promise today. I want him to promise that he won’t kill me with his sword.’ ”
52 Solomon replied, “Let him show that he’s a man people can respect. Then not even one hair on his head will fall to the ground. But if I find out he’s done something evil, he will die.” 53 King Solomon got some men to bring Adonijah down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon. Solomon said, “Go on home.”

Adonijah Presumes to Be King
1 Now King David was (A)old, [a]advanced in years; and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm. 2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman, a virgin, be sought for our lord the king, and let her [b]stand before the king, and let her care for him; and let her lie in your bosom, that our lord the king may be warm.” 3 So they sought for a lovely young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found (B)Abishag the (C)Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 The young woman was very lovely; and she cared for the king, and served him; but the king did not know her.
5 Then (D)Adonijah the [c]son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will [d]be king”; and (E)he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 (And his father had not [e]rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. (F)His mother had borne him after Absalom.) 7 Then he conferred with (G)Joab the son of Zeruiah and with (H)Abiathar the priest, and (I)they followed and helped Adonijah. 8 But (J)Zadok the priest, (K)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, (L)Nathan the prophet, (M)Shimei, Rei, and (N)the mighty men who belonged to David were not with Adonijah.
9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened cattle by the stone of [f]Zoheleth, which is by (O)En Rogel;[g] he also invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants. 10 But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or (P)Solomon his brother.
11 So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of (Q)Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it? 12 Come, please, let me now give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go immediately to King David and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your maidservant, saying, (R)“Assuredly your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 Then, while you are still talking there with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words.”
15 So Bathsheba went into the chamber to the king. (Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.) 16 And Bathsheba bowed and did homage to the king. Then the king said, “What is your wish?”
17 Then she said to him, “My lord, (S)you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18 So now, look! Adonijah has become king; and now, my lord the king, you do not know about it. 19 (T)He has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army; but Solomon your servant he has not invited. 20 And as for you, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king (U)rests with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted as offenders.”
22 And just then, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. 23 So they told the king, saying, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed down before the king with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 (V)For he has gone down today, and has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and look! They are eating and drinking before him; and they say, (W)‘Long[h] live King Adonijah!’ 26 But he has not invited me—me your servant—nor Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon. 27 Has this thing been done by my lord the king, and you have not told your servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
David Proclaims Solomon King(X)
28 Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king took an oath and said, (Y)“As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from every distress, 30 (Z)just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ so I certainly will do this day.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and paid homage to the king, and said, (AA)“Let my lord King David live forever!”
32 And King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king. 33 The king also said to them, (AB)“Take with you the servants of your lord, and have Solomon my son ride on my own (AC)mule, and take him down to (AD)Gihon.[i] 34 There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet (AE)anoint him king over Israel; and (AF)blow the horn, and say, [j]‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, and he shall be king in my place. For I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, (AG)“Amen! May the Lord God of my lord the king say so too. 37 (AH)As the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so may He be with Solomon, and (AI)make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, (AJ)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the (AK)Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and took him to Gihon. 39 Then Zadok the priest took a horn of (AL)oil from the tabernacle and (AM)anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, (AN)and all the people said, [k]“Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him; and the people played the flutes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth seemed to split with their sound.
41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the horn, he said, “Why is the city in such a noisy uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, there came (AO)Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him, “Come in, for (AP)you are a prominent man, and bring good news.”
43 Then Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule. 45 So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46 Also Solomon (AQ)sits on the throne of the kingdom. 47 And moreover the king’s servants have gone to bless our lord King David, saying, (AR)‘May God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ (AS)Then the king bowed himself on the bed. 48 Also the king said thus, ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has (AT)given one to sit on my throne this day, while my eyes see (AU)it!’ ”
49 So all the guests who were with Adonijah were afraid, and arose, and each one went his way.
50 Now Adonijah was afraid of Solomon; so he arose, and went and (AV)took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 And it was told Solomon, saying, “Indeed Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon; for look, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’ ”
52 Then Solomon said, “If he proves himself a worthy man, (AW)not one hair of him shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” 53 So King Solomon sent them to bring him down from the altar. And he came and fell down before King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
