O exército de David
12 São os seguintes os nomes dos valentes guerreiros que se juntaram a David, em Ziclague, no tempo em que tinha de andar escondido por causa de Saul. 2 Todos eles eram exímios atiradores de arco e de funda, tanto com a mão direita como com a esquerda. À semelhança do próprio rei Saul, eram todos da tribo de Benjamim.
3 Aiezer era o seu chefe; era filho de Semaá, de Gibeá. Os outros eram: Joás, seu irmão;
Jeziel e Pelete, filhos de Azmavete;
Beraca; Jeú de Anatote; 4 Ismaías de Gibeão, um valente guerreiro, tanto ou mais até do que os trinta;
Jeremias; Jaaziel; Joanã; Jozabade de Gedera; 5 Eluzai; Jerimote; Bealias; Semarias; Sefatias, de Harufe;
6 Elcana, Issias, Azarel, Joezer e Jasobeão, todos coraítas;
7 Joela e Zebadias, filhos de Jeroão de Gedor.
8 Grandes e valentes guerreiros, da tribo de Gad, foram também juntar-se a David no deserto, à fortaleza onde se encontrava. Eram muito hábeis tanto de escudo como de lança; dizia-se deles que tinham rostos de leões e eram tão ligeiros como gazelas sobre os montes.
9 Ezer era o seu chefe;
Obadias, o segundo no comando; Eliabe, o terceiro; e assim, por ordem de graduação:
10 Mismana, Jeremias,
11 Atai, Eliel,
12 Joanã, Elzabade,
13 Jeremias, Macbanai.
14 Estes homens eram oficiais do exército. O mais fraco valia por cem soldados vulgares e o mais forte valia por mil! 15 Atravessaram o rio Jordão, na época em que está mais cheio, e conquistaram toda a terra das margens, tanto de um lado como do outro.
16 Também vieram a David homens de Benjamim e Judá. 17 David saiu ao seu encontro e disse-lhes: “Se vieram para me ajudar, seremos amigos; mas se vieram para me entregar aos meus inimigos, sendo eu inocente, então que o Deus dos nossos pais o veja e intervenha como juiz.”
18 Ao responderem, o Espírito de Deus veio sobre eles e Amasai, o chefe dos trinta, disse:
“Somos teus, David;
Estamos do teu lado, filho de Jessé.
Paz seja contigo, e com todos os que te ajudam!
Deus está do teu lado.”
Então David deixou que se juntassem e fez deles capitães do seu exército.
19 Alguns homens de Manassés desertaram do exército de Israel e vieram juntar-se a David, na altura em que David se dirigia, juntamente com os filisteus, à luta contra Saul. Mas os generais filisteus recusaram deixar que David e os seus homens saíssem com eles à guerra. Depois de muita discussão, resolveram mandá-los embora, pois tinham receio que David, com a sua gente, pusessem em risco as suas forças, desertando para o lado de Saul.
20 Eis a lista dos homens de Manassés que passaram para o lado de David, quando este se dirigia a Ziclague: Adna, Jozabade, Jediael, Micael, Jozabade, Eliú, Ziletai. Cada um deles ocupava um lugar de destaque na hierarquia militar de Manassés. 21 Eram bravos e hábeis combatentes e apoiaram David no combate contra as incursões que sofriam em Ziclague. 22 Cada dia aumentava o número dos que se juntavam a David, de tal maneira que se formou um tremendo exército; era como um exército de Deus.
Os que vieram a David em Hebrom
23 Eis o registo dos que vieram a David em Hebrom. Todos estavam ansiosos por ver David tornar-se rei em lugar de Saul, tal como o Senhor dissera que haveria de acontecer.
24 De Judá, 6800 homens armados com escudo e com lança.
25 Da tribo de Simeão, 7100 notáveis soldados.
26-28 Dos levitas, 4600.
Dos sacerdotes descendentes de Aarão havia 3700 tropas sob o comando de Zadoque, um jovem de invulgar coragem, e Jeoiada. Tanto ele como 22 membros da sua família eram oficiais de entre os sacerdotes combatentes.
29 Da tribo de Benjamim, a mesma tribo de Saul, vieram 3000. A maior parte dos membros dessa tribo manteve-se fiel a Saul.
30 Da tribo de Efraim, 20 800 valentes guerreiros, cada um deles famoso no respetivo clã.
31 Da meia tribo de Manassés, 18 000 foram mandados com o objetivo de ajudar David a tornar-se rei.
32 Da tribo de Issacar houve 200 líderes, com os seus parentes, todos homens que compreendiam o sentido dos tempos e a direção que Israel deveria tomar.
33 Da tribo de Zebulão houve 50 000 homens de guerra bem treinados e armados, totalmente fiéis a David.
34 De Naftali houve 1000 oficiais e 37 000 soldados, equipados com escudos e lanças.
35 Da tribo de Dan houve 28 600 soldados, todos treinados para a guerra.
36 Da tribo de Aser houve 40 000 soldados, também treinados e prontos para a guerra.
37 Do outro lado do Jordão, onde viviam as tribos de Rúben, de Gad e a meia tribo de Manassés, houve 120 000 soldados equipados com toda a espécie de armamento.
38 Todos estes homens vieram até Hebrom em formação militar, prontos para a batalha e com o único propósito de fazer de David rei de Israel.
39 Na verdade, Israel inteiro estava pronto para isso. Durante três dias, na companhia de David, fizeram uma festa, comendo e bebendo, pois tinham sido feitos preparativos para os receber da melhor maneira. 40 Gente da vizinhança, assim como de pontos mais afastados, como de Issacar, Zebulão e Naftali, trouxe alimentos em burros, camelos, mulas e bois. Grandes fornecimentos de farinha, bolos de figos e de passas, vinho, azeite, gado e ovelhas foram trazidos para aquele grande encontro. A alegria espalhou-se por toda a terra de Israel.
A mudança da arca
(2 Sm 6.1-11)
13 Depois de ter consultado todos os seus chefes e comandantes militares, 2 David dirigiu-se à assembleia de Israel da seguinte maneira: “Visto que vos parece bem que eu seja vosso rei, e visto que temos a aprovação do Senhor, nosso Deus, mandemos uma mensagem aos nossos irmãos em toda a terra de Israel, incluindo os sacerdotes e os levitas, convidando-os a juntar-se a nós. 3 Tornemos também a trazer para junto de nós a arca de Deus, porque tem ficado esquecida, desde que Saul se tornou rei.”
4 Houve consenso geral e toda a gente esteve de acordo com a iniciativa. 5 David convocou todo o povo de Israel, desde Sior, na fronteira do Egito, até à entrada de Hamate, para que estivesse presente quando a arca de Deus fosse trazida de Quiriate-Jearim.
6 Então David e todo o Israel foram a Baalá, ou seja Quiriate-Jearim, em Judá, para trazer a arca do Senhor Deus, cujo trono está acima dos querubins. 7 Foram-na buscar a casa de Abinadabe, num carro novo. Uzá e Aiô conduziam o carro. 8 David e todo o povo dançaram perante Deus, com grande entusiasmo, acompanhados de cânticos, harpas, liras, tamborins, címbalos e cornetas.
9 Quando chegaram à eira de Quidom, os bois tropeçaram e Uzá estendeu a mão para segurar a arca. 10 A ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra ele e matou-o, por ter tocado na arca. E ficou ali estendido diante de Deus. 11 David ficou muito contristado devido àquilo que o Senhor fizera e deu àquele lugar o nome Perez-Uzá (brecha de Uzá). Ainda hoje é assim chamado.
12 O rei ficou com medo de Deus e interrogava-se: “Como hei de trazer a arca de Deus para junto de mim?” 13 Finalmente, decidiu-se por trazê-la até à casa de Obede-Edom, originário de Gate, em lugar de a levar para a sua própria casa, na Cidade de David. 14 A arca permaneceu ali com a família de Obede-Edom durante três meses. E o Senhor abençoou-o, a ele e à sua casa.
O palácio e a família de David
(2 Sm 5.11-16; 1 Cr 3.5-8)
14 Depois Hirão, o rei de Tiro, enviou mensageiros a David, pedreiros e carpinteiros para construírem o seu palácio; forneceu-lhe igualmente muita madeira de cedro. 2 David deu-se conta de que a razão por que o Senhor o tinha feito rei e tornado o seu reino tão prestigiado era o amor que tinha pelo seu povo. 3 Depois de se mudar para Jerusalém, David casou com outras mulheres e teve muitos filhos e filhas. 4 São estes os nomes dos filhos que lhe nasceram em Jerusalém: Samua, Sobabe, Natã, Salomão; 5 Ibar, Elisua, Elpelete; 6 Nogá, Nefegue, Jafia; 7 Elisama, Beeliada e Elifelete.
David derrota os filisteus
(2 Sm 5.17-25)
8 Quando os filisteus ouviram que David era o novo rei de todo o Israel, mobilizaram as suas forças para o capturar; ao tomar conhecimento, David convocou o seu exército. 9 Os filisteus estenderam-se pelo vale de Refaim. 10 David perguntou então a Deus: “Se eu sair e lutar contra eles, dar-me-ás a vitória?”
O Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Sim, entregá-los-ei nas tuas mãos.”
11 Então atacou-os em Baal-Perazim e derrotou-os. E David exclamou: “Deus abriu uma brecha, como num dique, para derrubar os meus inimigos diante de mim!” Por isso, chamou àquele lugar Baal-Perazim (Senhor das brechas). 12 Depois da batalha, ao fugirem, os filisteus deixaram abandonadas as imagens dos seus deuses e David mandou-as queimar.
13 Passado algum tempo, os filisteus voltaram a atacar o vale. 14 David consultou de novo a Deus sobre o que haveria de fazer. A resposta de Deus foi: “Desta vez não os ataques frontalmente. Vai por detrás e aparece-lhes por entre as amoreiras. 15 Quando ouvires um barulho como de gente marchando por cima das copas das amoreiras, esse será o sinal para atacares. Deus irá à tua frente e destruirá o inimigo.” 16 David fez segundo as instruções dadas por Deus e destruiu o exército filisteu, perseguindo-o desde Gibeão até Gezer.
17 A fama de David espalhou-se por toda a parte e o Senhor fez com que todas as nações o temessem.

Warriors Join David
12 These were the men who came to David at Ziklag,(A) while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; 2 they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed;(B) they were relatives of Saul(C) from the tribe of Benjamin):
3 Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, 4 and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,[a](D) 5 Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; 7 and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.(E)
8 Some Gadites(F) defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions,(G) and they were as swift as gazelles(H) in the mountains.
9 Ezer was the chief,
Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,
10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,
12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,
13 Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.
14 These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred,(I) and the greatest for a thousand.(J) 15 It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks,(K) and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 Other Benjamites(L) and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.”
18 Then the Spirit(M) came on Amasai,(N) chief of the Thirty, and he said:
“We are yours, David!
We are with you, son of Jesse!
Success,(O) success to you,
and success to those who help you,
for your God will help you.”
So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.
19 Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, “It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.”)(P) 20 When David went to Ziklag,(Q) these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22 Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.[b]
Others Join David at Hebron
23 These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron(R) to turn(S) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:(T)
24 from Judah, carrying shield and spear—6,800 armed for battle;
25 from Simeon, warriors ready for battle—7,100;
26 from Levi—4,600, 27 including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28 and Zadok,(U) a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;
29 from Benjamin,(V) Saul’s tribe—3,000, most(W) of whom had remained loyal to Saul’s house until then;
30 from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans—20,800;
31 from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king—18,000;
32 from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do(X)—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;
33 from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty—50,000;
34 from Naphtali—1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;
35 from Dan, ready for battle—28,600;
36 from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle—40,000;
37 and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon—120,000.
38 All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.(Y) All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39 The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking,(Z) for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40 Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies(AA) of flour, fig cakes, raisin(AB) cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy(AC) in Israel.
Bringing Back the Ark(AD)
13 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us,(AE) for we did not inquire(AF) of[c] it[d] during the reign of Saul.” 4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
5 So David assembled all Israel,(AG) from the Shihor River(AH) in Egypt to Lebo Hamath,(AI) to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.(AJ) 6 David and all Israel went to Baalah(AK) of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim(AL)—the ark that is called by the Name.
7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s(AM) house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.(AN)
9 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger(AO) burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down(AP) because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
11 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[e](AQ)
12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(AR) the Gittite. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household(AS) and everything he had.
David’s House and Family(AT)
14 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs,(AU) stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted(AV) for the sake of his people Israel.
3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons(AW) and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him there:(AX) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada[f] and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines(AY)
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel,(AZ) they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley(BA) of Rephaim; 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”
The Lord answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”
11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim,(BB) and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[g] 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn(BC) them in the fire.(BD)
13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley;(BE) 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon(BF) to Gezer.(BG)
17 So David’s fame(BH) spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear(BI) him.
