1 Timothy 5:3-8
New English Translation
3 Honor[a] widows who are truly in need.[b] 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to fulfill their duty[c] toward their own household and so repay their parents what is owed them.[d] For this is what pleases God.[e] 5 But the widow who is truly in need, and completely on her own,[f] has set her hope on God and continues in her pleas and prayers night and day. 6 But the one who lives for pleasure is dead even[g] while she lives. 7 Reinforce[h] these commands,[i] so that they will be beyond reproach. 8 But if someone does not provide for his own,[j] especially his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

3 Honor widows who are (A)widows indeed, 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, (B)they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to [a]make some return to their parents; for this is (C)acceptable in the sight of God. 5 Now she who is a (D)widow indeed and who has been left alone, (E)has fixed her hope on God and continues in (F)petitions and prayers night and day. 6 But she who (G)lives in self-indulgence is (H)dead even while she lives. 7 (I)And command these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has (J)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
