New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some repayment to their parents, for this is pleasing in God’s sight.(A) 5 The real widow, left alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day,(B) 6 but the widow[a] who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(C) 7 Give these commands as well, so that they may be above reproach.(D) 8 And whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.(E)

New English Translation
3 Honor[a] widows who are truly in need.[b] 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to fulfill their duty[c] toward their own household and so repay their parents what is owed them.[d] For this is what pleases God.[e] 5 But the widow who is truly in need, and completely on her own,[f] has set her hope on God and continues in her pleas and prayers night and day. 6 But the one who lives for pleasure is dead even[g] while she lives. 7 Reinforce[h] these commands,[i] so that they will be beyond reproach. 8 But if someone does not provide for his own,[j] especially his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
