13 And (A)we also thank God constantly[a] for this, that when you received (B)the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it (C)not as the word of men[b] but as what it really is, the word of God, (D)which is at work in you believers. 14 For you, brothers, (E)became imitators of (F)the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For (G)you suffered the same things from your own countrymen (H)as they did from the Jews,[c] 15 (I)who killed both the Lord Jesus and (J)the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and (K)oppose all mankind 16 (L)by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always (M)to fill up the measure of their sins. But (N)wrath has come upon them at last![d]

Paul's Longing to See Them Again

17 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, (O)in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire (P)to see you face to face, 18 because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan (Q)hindered us. 19 For what is our hope or (R)joy or crown of boasting (S)before our Lord Jesus at his (T)coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our glory and joy.

Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing (U)to be left behind at Athens alone, and we (V)sent Timothy, (W)our brother and God's coworker[e] in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that (X)we are destined for this. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, (Y)just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. For this reason, (Z)when I could bear it no longer, (AA)I sent to learn about your faith, (AB)for fear that somehow (AC)the tempter had tempted you and (AD)our labor would be in vain.

Timothy's Encouraging Report

But (AE)now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of (AF)your faith and love and reported (AG)that you always remember us kindly and (AH)long to see us, as we long to see you— for this reason, brothers,[f] in all our distress and affliction (AI)we have been comforted about you through your faith. For now we live, if you (AJ)are standing fast in the Lord. For (AK)what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly (AL)night and day (AM)that we may see you face to face and (AN)supply what is lacking in your faith?

11 Now may (AO)our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, (AP)direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord (AQ)make you increase and abound in love (AR)for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may (AS)establish your hearts blameless in holiness before (AT)our God and Father, at (AU)the coming of our Lord Jesus (AV)with all his saints.

13 And we also thank God continually(A) because, when you received the word of God,(B) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators(C) of God’s churches in Judea,(D) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people(E) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus(F) and the prophets(G) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles(H) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.(I) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[a]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),(J) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.(K) 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan(L) blocked our way.(M) 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown(N) in which we will glory(O) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?(P) Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory(Q) and joy.

So when we could stand it no longer,(R) we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.(S) We sent Timothy,(T) who is our brother and co-worker(U) in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ,(V) to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.(W) For you know quite well that we are destined for them.(X) In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.(Y) For this reason, when I could stand it no longer,(Z) I sent to find out about your faith.(AA) I was afraid that in some way the tempter(AB) had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.(AC)

Timothy’s Encouraging Report

But Timothy(AD) has just now come to us from you(AE) and has brought good news about your faith and love.(AF) He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.(AG) Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm(AH) in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you(AI) in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?(AJ) 10 Night and day we pray(AK) most earnestly that we may see you again(AL) and supply what is lacking in your faith.

11 Now may our God and Father(AM) himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other(AN) and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless(AO) and holy in the presence of our God and Father(AP) when our Lord Jesus comes(AQ) with all his holy ones.(AR)
