15 Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to (A)Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul [a]numbered the people who were present with him, (B)about six hundred men. 16 Now Saul and his son Jonathan and the people who were present with them were staying in (C)Geba of Benjamin, and the Philistines camped at Michmash. 17 And (D)the [b]raiders came from the camp of the Philistines in three [c]companies: one [d]company turned [e]toward (E)Ophrah, to the land of Shual, 18 and another [f]company turned to the way of (F)Beth-horon, and another [g]company turned to the way of the border which overlooks the valley of (G)Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19 Now (H)no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make [h](I)swords or spears.” 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines, each to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, and his [i]goad. 21 And the charge was [j]two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to fix the goad. 22 So it happened on the day of battle that (J)neither sword nor spear was found in the hands of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan, but they were found with Saul and his son Jonathan.

Preparations for Battle

And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men. 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies; one company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shu′al, 18 another company turned toward Beth-hor′on, and another company turned toward the border that looks down upon the valley of Zebo′im toward the wilderness.

19 Now there was no smith to be found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears”; 20 but every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle;[a] 21 and the charge was a pim for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.[b] 22 So on the day of the battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.
