16 Saul’s son Jonathan set out and came to David at Horesh; there he strengthened his hand through the Lord.[a](A) 17 He said to him, “Do not be afraid, for the hand of my father Saul shall not find you; you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be second to you; my father Saul also knows that this is so.”(B) 18 Then the two of them made a covenant before the Lord; David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.(C)

16 Saul’s son Jonathan got up and went to David at Horesh, and he encouraged him to trust[a] in God. 17 Jonathan told him, “Don’t be afraid. My father Saul won’t find you, and you will be king over Israel. I’ll be your second-in-command. My father Saul also knows this.” 18 The two of them made a covenant[b] in the Lord’s presence. David remained at Horesh while Jonathan went home.

You will be king(B) over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.” 18 The two of them made a covenant(C) before the Lord. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh.
