22 Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel(A) and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.(B) 23 He said to them, “Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. 24 No, my sons, the report I hear from the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?”(C) But they would not listen to their father, since the Lord intended to kill them.(D) 26 By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.(E)

Judgment against Eli’s Sons

22 Now Eli was very[a] old, and he had heard everything that[b] his sons were doing[c] to the Israelis,[d] and how they lay with the women who were serving regularly[e] at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 23 “Why are you doing these things that I’m hearing about?” he asked his sons,[f] “These reports about your evil deeds are coming from all these[g] people! 24 No, my sons, I’m not hearing good news being circulated by the Lord’s people. 25 If a person sins[h] against another, God[i] will mediate for him,[j] but if a person sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?”

But they would not follow the advice of[k] their father; for the Lord wanted to put them to death. 26 But the boy Samuel continued to grow both physically and in favor with the Lord and the people.

I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[a] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(C) intercede(D) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(E) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(F)
