Давуд у священнослужителя в Нове
21 Давуд пришёл в город Нов к священнослужителю Ахи-Малику. Встретив его, Ахи-Малик заволновался и спросил:
– Почему ты один? Почему с тобой никого нет?
2 Давуд ответил священнослужителю Ахи-Малику:
– Царь поручил мне одно дело и сказал: «Никто не должен ничего знать о порученном тебе деле, с которым я тебя посылаю». А своим людям я велел встретить меня в условленном месте. 3 Что у тебя тут есть под рукой? Дай мне пять лепёшек или что найдётся у тебя.
4 Но священнослужитель ответил Давуду:
– У меня нет под рукой обычного хлеба, здесь есть священный хлеб[a] – но я дам его только при условии, что твои люди воздерживались от женщин.
5 Давуд ответил:
– Поистине, женщин при нас не было – как обычно, когда я отправляюсь с поручением. Тела моих людей чисты, даже когда мы спешим по обычным поручениям. Насколько же чище они должны быть сегодня!
6 И священнослужитель дал ему священный хлеб, потому что там не было другого хлеба, кроме того, который в тот день был взят с места, где он лежал перед Вечным и заменён свежим.
7 (В тот день там был один из слуг Шаула, который задержался перед Вечным, это был эдомитянин Доэг, глава пастухов Шаула.)
8 Давуд спросил Ахи-Малика:
– Нет ли у тебя здесь копья или меча? Я не захватил ни своего меча, ни иного оружия, потому что дело царя было срочным.
9 Священнослужитель ответил:
– Здесь есть меч филистимлянина Голиафа, которого ты убил в долине Ела. Меч за ефодом, завёрнутый в одежду, если хочешь, возьми его. Кроме этого, здесь нет никакого другого меча.
Давуд сказал:
– Нет ему равного, дай его мне.
Давуд у филистимлян в Гате
10 В тот день Давуд убежал от Шаула и пришёл к Ахишу, царю Гата. 11 Но слуги Ахиша сказали ему:
– Разве это не Давуд, царь той страны? Разве это не тот, о ком они пели друг другу во время танцев: «Шаул сразил тысячи, а Давуд – десятки тысяч»?
12 Давуд обратил внимание на эти слова и очень испугался Ахиша, царя Гата. 13 Он притворился перед ними сумасшедшим и, пока был у них, вёл себя как безумный, царапал знаки на дверях и пускал слюни по бороде.
14 Ахиш сказал своим слугам:
– Гляньте на этого человека! Он сумасшедший! Зачем вы привели его ко мне? 15 Разве у меня мало помешанных, что вы привели ко мне и этого, чтобы он безумствовал передо мной? Для чего этому человеку входить в мой дом?
Давуд находит соратников
22 Давуд покинул Гат и укрылся в пещере Адуллама. Когда его отец и весь его дом услышали об этом, они спустились к нему. 2 Все несчастные, обиженные и все должники собрались вокруг него, и он стал их вождём. С ним было около четырёхсот человек.
3 Оттуда Давуд пошёл в Мицпу, что в Моаве, и сказал царю Моава:
– Пожалуйста, позволь моим родителям прийти и побыть у вас, пока я не узнаю, что сделает для меня Всевышний.
4 Он оставил их у царя Моава, и они оставались у него всё время, пока Давуд находился в том убежище. 5 Но пророк Гад сказал Давуду:
– Не оставайся в убежище. Иди в Иудею.
И Давуд ушёл из Моава и пришёл в Херетский лес.
Шаул убивает священнослужителей Нова
6 А Шаул услышал о том, что Давуд и его люди обнаружены. Шаул с копьём в руке сидел под тамариском на холме в Гиве, и его приближённые стояли вокруг него.
7 Шаул сказал им:
– Слушайте, вениамитяне! Разве сын Есея даст вам всем поля и виноградники? Разве он сделает всех вас тысячниками и сотниками? 8 Неужели поэтому вы все сговорились против меня? Никто не открыл мне, когда мой сын заключил дружеский союз с сыном Есея. Никто из вас не пожалел меня и не открыл мне, что мой сын настроил против меня моего слугу, чтобы тот устроил мне засаду, как он и делает сегодня.
9 Но эдомитянин Доэг, который стоял вместе с приближёнными Шаула, сказал:
– Я видел, как сын Есея приходил к Ахи-Малику, сыну Ахитува, в город Нов. 10 Ахи-Малик спрашивал для него Вечного. Ещё он снабдил его продовольствием и дал ему меч филистимлянина Голиафа.
11 Тогда царь послал за священнослужителем Ахи-Маликом, сыном Ахитува, и за всей семьёй его отца, члены которой были священнослужителями в Нове, и все они пришли к царю. 12 Шаул сказал:
– Послушай-ка, сын Ахитува.
– Да, мой господин, – ответил тот.
13 Шаул сказал ему:
– Почему вы сговорились против меня, ты и сын Есея?! Ты дал ему хлеб и меч, спрашивал для него Всевышнего, чтобы он восстал против меня и устроил мне засаду, как он и делает сегодня.
14 Ахи-Малик ответил царю:
– Кто из всех твоих слуг так верен тебе, как Давуд, который и зять царя, и начальник над твоей стражей, и высоко почитаем в твоём доме? 15 Разве в тот день я в первый раз спрашивал для него Всевышнего? Конечно нет! Пусть царь не винит ни меня, твоего раба, ни мою семью, ведь я совсем ничего не знаю об этом деле.
16 Но царь сказал:
– Ты непременно умрёшь, Ахи-Малик, ты и вся семья твоего отца.
17 И царь приказал страже, которая стояла при нём:
– Ступайте и убейте священнослужителей Вечного, потому что они также примкнули к Давуду. Они знали, что он сбежал, а мне не открыли.
Но слуги царя не хотели поднять руку на священнослужителей Вечного. 18 Тогда царь приказал Доэгу:
– Ты ступай и умертви священнослужителей.
И эдомитянин Доэг пошёл и умертвил их. В тот день он убил восемьдесят пять человек, которые носили льняной ефод. 19 Затем он предал мечу Нов, город священнослужителей, вместе со всеми его мужчинами и женщинами, детьми и младенцами, волами, ослами и овцами.
20 Но один из сыновей Ахи-Малика, сына Ахитува, по имени Авиатар, спасся и бежал к Давуду. 21 Он рассказал Давуду, что Шаул убил священнослужителей Вечного. 22 И Давуд сказал Авиатару:
– Когда там был эдомитянин Доэг, я знал, что он непременно расскажет Шаулу. Я в ответе за гибель всей семьи твоего отца. 23 Оставайся со мной, не бойся, тот, кто охотится за твоей жизнью, охотится и за моей. У меня ты в безопасности.

David at Nob
21 [a]David went to Nob,(A) to Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek trembled(B) when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”
2 David answered Ahimelek the priest, “The king sent me on a mission and said to me, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. 3 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.”
4 But the priest answered David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread(C) on hand; however, there is some consecrated(D) bread here—provided the men have kept(E) themselves from women.”
5 David replied, “Indeed women have been kept from us, as usual(F) whenever[b] I set out. The men’s bodies are holy(G) even on missions that are not holy. How much more so today!” 6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,(H) since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away.
7 Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord; he was Doeg(I) the Edomite,(J) Saul’s chief shepherd.
8 David asked Ahimelek, “Don’t you have a spear or a sword here? I haven’t brought my sword or any other weapon, because the king’s mission was urgent.”
9 The priest replied, “The sword(K) of Goliath(L) the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah,(M) is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.”
David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
David at Gath
10 That day David fled from Saul and went(N) to Achish king of Gath. 11 But the servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances:
“‘Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands’?”(O)
12 David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath. 13 So he pretended to be insane(P) in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.
14 Achish said to his servants, “Look at the man! He is insane! Why bring him to me? 15 Am I so short of madmen that you have to bring this fellow here to carry on like this in front of me? Must this man come into my house?”
David at Adullam and Mizpah
22 David left Gath and escaped to the cave(Q) of Adullam.(R) When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered(S) around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.
3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?” 4 So he left them with the king of Moab,(T) and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.
5 But the prophet Gad(U) said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.(V)
Saul Kills the Priests of Nob
6 Now Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. And Saul was seated,(W) spear in hand, under the tamarisk(X) tree on the hill at Gibeah, with all his officials standing at his side. 7 He said to them, “Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders(Y) of thousands and commanders of hundreds? 8 Is that why you have all conspired(Z) against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant(AA) with the son of Jesse.(AB) None of you is concerned(AC) about me or tells me that my son has incited my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today.”
9 But Doeg(AD) the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub(AE) at Nob.(AF) 10 Ahimelek inquired(AG) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions(AH) and the sword(AI) of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek son of Ahitub and all the men of his family, who were the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.”
“Yes, my lord,” he answered.
13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired(AJ) against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has rebelled against me and lies in wait for me, as he does today?”
14 Ahimelek answered the king, “Who(AK) of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household? 15 Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.”
16 But the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.(AL)”
17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side: “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.”
But the king’s officials were unwilling(AM) to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.
18 The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”(AN) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.(AO) 19 He also put to the sword(AP) Nob,(AQ) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.
20 But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,(AR) named Abiathar,(AS) escaped and fled to join David.(AT) 21 He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg(AU) the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family. 23 Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you(AV) is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

David Takes Consecrated Bread
21 Then David came to (A)Nob, to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech (B)came trembling to meet David and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” 2 David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commissioned me with a matter and has said to me, ‘(C)No one is to know anything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you; and I have directed the young men to a certain place.’ 3 Now then, what [a]do you have on hand? Give [b]me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.” 4 The priest answered David and said, “There is no ordinary bread [c]on hand, but there is (D)consecrated bread, if only the young men have (E)kept themselves from women.” 5 David answered the priest and said to him, “(F)Be assured, women have been denied to us as previously when I left and the [d](G)bodies of the young men were consecrated, though it was an ordinary journey; how much more then will [e]their bodies be consecrated today?” 6 So (H)the priest gave him consecrated bread; for there was no bread there except the (I)bread of the Presence which was removed from its place before the Lord, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day it was taken away.
7 Now one of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was (J)Doeg the Edomite, the (K)chief of Saul’s shepherds.
8 David said to Ahimelech, “Now is there no spear or sword [f]on hand? For I brought neither my sword nor my weapons [g]with me, because the king’s matter was urgent.” 9 Then the priest said, “(L)The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you [h]killed (M)in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if you would take it for yourself, take it. For there is no other except it here.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
10 Then David set out and fled that day from Saul, and went to (N)Achish king of Gath. 11 But the (O)servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? (P)Did they not sing of this one as they danced, saying,
‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
12 David (Q)took these words [i]to heart and greatly feared Achish king of Gath. 13 So he (R)disguised his sanity while in their sight and acted insanely in their [j]custody, and he scribbled on the doors of the gate, and drooled on his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is behaving like an insane person. Why do you bring him to me? 15 Do I lack insane people, that you have brought this one to behave like an insane person in my presence? Shall this one come into my house?”
Priests Killed at Nob
22 So David departed from there and (S)escaped to (T)the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s household heard about it, they went down there to him. 2 Then everyone who was in distress, and everyone who [k]was in debt, and everyone who was [l]discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were (U)about four hundred men with him.
3 And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” 4 Then he [m]left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5 But (V)Gad the prophet said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; leave, and go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went into the forest of Hereth.
6 Then Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered. Now (W)Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing in front of him. 7 Saul said to his servants who were standing in front of him, “Hear now, you Benjaminites! Will the son of Jesse really give all of you fields and vineyards? (X)Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds? 8 For all of you have conspired against me so that there is no one who [n]informs me (Y)when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you (Z)who cares about me or [o]informs me that my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in ambush, as it is this day.” 9 Then (AA)Doeg the Edomite, who was [p]standing in front of the servants of Saul, responded and said, “(AB)I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to (AC)Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 And (AD)he inquired of the Lord for him, (AE)gave him provisions, and (AF)gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent a messenger to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s household, the priests who were in Nob; and all of them came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.” And he [q]replied, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 Saul then said to him, “Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, so that he would rise up against me (AG)by lying in ambush as it is this day?”
14 (AH)Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, “And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s own son-in-law, who [r]is commander over your bodyguard, and is honored in your house? 15 Did I just begin (AI)to inquire of God for him today? Far be it from me! (AJ)Do not let the king impute anything against his servant or against any of the household of my father, because your servant knows nothing [s]at all of this whole affair.” 16 But the king said, “You shall certainly die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s household!” 17 And (AK)the king said to the [t]guards who were attending him, “Turn around and put the priests of the Lord to death, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not [u]inform me.” But the (AL)servants of the king were unwilling to reach out with their hands to [v]attack the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You, turn around and [w]attack the priests!” And Doeg the Edomite turned around and [x]attacked the priests, and (AM)he killed on that day eighty-five men (AN)who wore the linen ephod. 19 (AO)He also struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; he also struck oxen, donkeys, and sheep with the edge of the sword.
20 But (AP)one son of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, (AQ)escaped and fled [y]to David. 21 Abiathar informed David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when (AR)Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would certainly tell Saul. I myself [z]have turned against every person in your father’s household. 23 Stay with me; do not be afraid, [aa]even though (AS)he who is seeking my life is seeking your life. For you are safe with me.”
